Get to Know Jesus Jesus Sermon on the Plain Luke 6:17-49 January 20, 2019 Luke Mini-Series GET TO KNOW JESUS A Study of the Gospel of Luke Date Message Topic Text Jan 6 Jesus Begins His Ministry Luke 4:1-44 Jan 13 Jesus Calls His First Disciples Luke 5:1-6:16 Jan 20 Jesus Sermon on the Plain Luke 6:17-49 Jan 27 Jesus Heals and Forgives (Healing Service) Luke 7:1-50 Feb 3 Jesus Calms a Storm Luke 8:1-25 Feb 10 Jesus Casts Out Demons Luke 8:26-56 Feb 17 Jesus Sends Out His Disciples Part 1 Luke 9:1-50 Feb 24 Jesus Confronts Excuses Luke 9:51-62 Mar 3 Jesus Sends Out His Disciples Part 2 Luke 10:1-24 Mar 10 Jesus Teaches About Loving Our Neighbor Luke 10:25-42 More Grace Fellowship sermons can be found at whatisgrace.org Jesus Sermon on the Plain (Luke 6:17-20) Some people say that the Gospel writers contradict each other: Look at all the differences between Luke 6 and Matthew 5-7! Jesus preached hundreds of times in different places, and He has the freedom to preach a different message in different places. Matthew 5-7 is the Sermon on the Mount. Luke 6 is the Sermon on the Plain. Jesus Message About Blessings (Luke 6:20-26) We need to wrestle with Jesus message at face value before trying to explain it away and become comfortable: Blessed are you who are Poor Hungry now Weep now Persecuted on account of Me Woe to you who are Rich Full now Laugh now Spoken well of Jesus Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 can clarify what Jesus means in Luke 6: (1) Blessed are the poor in spirit (Mt. 5:3) Blessed are those who know their need for God and depend upon Him. Reality: Financially poor people tend to know their need for God more than financially rich people.

(2) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (Mt. 5:6) Blessed are those who passionately pursue God. Reality: Voluntary or involuntary fasting lends itself to Godchasing more than a full stomach. (3) Blessed are those who mourn (Mt. 5:4) Blessed are those who do not sweep their pain under the rug and pretend that it is not there, but who purposefully process their losses with God and people. Reality: It is difficult to process losses if you are constantly immersing yourself in entertainment. (4) Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake (Mt. 5:10) Blessed are those who believe in and follow God s Word even if causes people to exclude you or speak bad about you. Reality: If no one is offended by your life, you re probably not truly walking with Jesus. Application #1 As an application, I m going to Declare my desperate need for God in my life; Passionately pursue my relationship with Jesus including fasting when He leads me to; Repent of (mourn over) my sins; Slow down and grieve my losses sharing them with God and a trusted friend; Walk with Jesus even if it causes others to exclude or persecute me. Video: Jessie [4:45] can be found at crossforthenations.org Jesus Central Message of Love (Luke 6:27-49) 1. Love (vv.27-31) How do you do that!!?? By doing good to them (v.27b), blessing them (v.28a), and praying for them (v.28b). Jesus gives us four tangible examples: o When someone hurts you (v.29a) o When someone takes from you (v.29b) o When someone asks of you (v.30a) o When someone borrows from you (v.30b) Application #2a A difficult person whom God is calling me to love is Application #2b A specific way that I am sensing God calling me to love that person is by Doing this specific good thing for them: Speaking words of blessing to them Praying good for them Not retaliating Giving to them

Jesus then gives us the Golden Rule (v.31) Ultimate expression of the Golden Rule sharing the Gospel Video about Student Ministry [1:07] Application #3 A step that I m going to take to share the eternity-difference-making Gospel with others is 2. Reasons to love (vv.32-38) Because there are great benefits and eternal rewards when you live this way (vv.32-35) (Matthew 6:19-20) Because living this way will demonstrate how children of God act you will be giving kindness and mercy to unbelievers (vv.35-36) Because God has been kind and generous and merciful to you (v.36) Because you will be treated like you treat others (vv.37-38) YouTube Video: The Story of MLK Jr by Kid President [3:26] 3. Illustrations that Jesus uses to drive home His point (vv.39-49) (v.39) Teachers (v.40) Something caught in your (vv.41-42) Fruit (vv.43-45) Building foundations (vv.46-49) Application #4 One tangible way that am going to apply the illustrations from Jesus Sermon on the Plain is I m going to admit that I am spiritually blind, and I m going to stop following someone else who is spiritually blind. I m going to seek to become more and more like my Master Jesus. I m going to ask God to show me the log in my own eye and to take care of that. I m going to surrender my life to God s Spirit in order to produce good fruit in my life (Galatians 5:16,22-23). I m going to build my life on the rock of God s Word. Galatians 5:16,22 Walk by the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is love. One more illustration: Jesus life and death
