May 6, 2018 Sixth Sunday of Easter 5 A Word About Baptisms... Baptisms are celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month at 1:45 PM and the fourth Saturday at 12:30 PM. Please call the Parish Office to arrange for the Baptism of your child. Godparents for Baptism must be at least 16 years of age, have received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation and be "eligible" to be a Godparent. Godparents who are not registered at Saint Matthew s need a "Letter of Eligibility" (not a Baptismal Certificate) from the parish they belong to at present. If you have any difficulty or questions about any of these points, please call us. Families that want a so-called private Baptism at a time separate from the above with a visiting priest or deacon are advised that no date will be set until the visiting clergy have contacted the Pastor and obtained his permission. If one wishes a particular priest or deacon assigned to the Parish to perform your child s Baptism it can be done at the regular Parish Baptism administered by that priest or deacon. Naming your children: Please remember that the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church obliges pastors to be sure that children are not given names "contrary to Christian sentiment" at Baptism. Name your children after family members so that they will have a sense of "connection" in a fractured world! The Church asks us to give children the names of saints for the same reason: so that they may have special intercessors in Heaven and may have a Heavenly "friend" to learn about and imitate. In today's world, your children need all the help they can get: give them the beautiful names of the Saints and of family members and you will be giving them a great treasure! Father Hewes Our Pilgrim Madonna The Legion of Mary would love to bring Our Lady of Fatima to spend a week at your home. If you are interested, please call: Lucia: 631 940-4015 or Rosa: 631 920-2446

As we join together to celebrate the wonderful Moms in our lives, let s also take time to remember and pray for all the thousands of Moms who worry about how they are going to put food on the table for their children this week. More than 35% of the 300,000 people on Long Island who receive emergency food each year are children under the age of 18. Please consider supporting the work of the Catholic Ministries Appeal so that we can continue to care for God s children and their families through our Parish Outreach programs and Catholic Charities. Our hope is that each family will make a gift. We cannot ask everyone to consider the same size gift, but after prayer and reflection, each family is invited to make a gift in response to God s generosity in their lives. No gift is too small and all gifts make a difference in the lives of others! For more information visit www.drvc.org/cma or call 516-678-5800- ext. 296 Thank you! May Our Lady Always Be At Your Side. God bless, Terry Sbashnig, President Thank you from the Knights of Columbus Knight at the Races is one of our fundraising events which enable us to support our Parish, the local community and various worthwhile causes. We held the event on Saturday April 14th to raise money for the elevator that will be constructed at St. Matthew. We are very pleased that the evening was a huge success. Those in attendance had a fun night and enjoyed good food, plentiful beer, wine and soda, a little wagering on the ponies and great companionship. Based upon the smiles on the faces, it was difficult to discern who had a better time- the youngsters or some of the more mature attendees. At the end of the night, regardless whether they walked away with more money in their pocket than when entering, everyone was a winner as they had a fun time and left hoping that in the not too distant future they would be riding in style to events in Msgr. Goggin Hall. Most importantly, as a result of everyone s support, we were able to raise $1500 to assist with the construction of the elevator. We would like to thank everyone who attended and supported this event. In particular, we would like to thank Chef Pete Gerbasi, who spent many hours preparing our delicious dinner, and his mother Alba, who baked the delectable desserts. Since we know that much more money will have to be raised for the elevator, we expect to be hosting future fundraising events. We hope to see you there. Thank you again for your support. Knights of Columbus

May 31 ~ Margaret Cuffaro from Roslyn Bank will update us on frauds. No matter how smart you may think you are on this subject, believe me, these people never sleep. There is always a new trick up their sleeve to take advantage of us. You must attend this meeting and bring a friend. Don t be their next victim. Now on to the subject of trips. In the past, we averaged a trip of some sort every six or eight weeks. Sometimes to a Casino, Montauk, Greenport, West Point, etc. I m having an extremely hard time lately organizing most anything. I know that we are getting older (no complaints here) but I try for trips that require very little walking, restaurants on the main floors or with elevators, etc. I also realize the Jakes 58 is right around the corner, but I still have people ask me when are we going to the Sands in Bethlehem, PA? I am trying to arrange for the Sands in June, Greenport in July or August and Sight Sound in Lancaster to see Jesus in October. When I cancelled that trip, I was asked, why? saying that they would have gone. But they did not sign up or even express an interest! All of these trips require the rental of a bus and must have a minimum of 40 to cover the cost of transportation. Currently, I m asking for a show of hands from those who would be interested in a theatre trip to Creative Ministries in Oakdale to see On The Town on Sunday, June 10 at 2 pm (no driving at night). This is a great musical. We missed Ragtime, also a great show, but it was in February (couldn t trust the weather). There will be sign-up sheets for all these proposed events to determine the interest in each and to see which ones are worth pursuing. I m also trying to revive our Movie of the Month but it s not easy. Please call me with any feedback and suggestions ~ 667-7922 and remember pray for all of those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for our country, our military, and all those who protect us. God bless America. See you in Church, Pat

May 6, 2018 Sixth Sunday of Easter 14 Focus on Religious Freedom from Catholics for Freedom of Religion www.cffor.org A Bill Assaults Religious Freedom & Free Speech (A Cautionary Tale for all States): A new bill in California claims to protect LGBT people, but actually limits their choices, censors speech, and infringes upon religious freedom," wrote Monica Burke, researcher for Religion and Civil Society. This assault on free exercise of religion and free speech hurts everyone, especially those LGBT individuals who wish to seek help or information in their efforts to understand or refrain from certain inclinations. This legislation would set a precedent for the government to silence certain viewpoints. The CA legislature introduced Bill 2943 that amends a consumer law with the purpose to ban "sexual orientation change efforts." This expansive law would impose widespread censorship that could implicate authors, speakers, counselors, colleges and universities, and even religious leaders seeking to address unwanted same-sex attraction or gender identity confusion. In CA, licensed counselors are already banned from helping minors with unwanted samesex attractions. This bill goes beyond this ban and legal experts have confirmed that it could ban books, shut down churches, and close psychiatric offices all over the state. No one in the state of CA could teach a course or recommend books that in any way challenge LGBT ideology. Bookstores or online platforms, such as Amazon, that sell such books, could be punished or not allowed to sell in CA. Colleges and universities that maintain codes of conduct requiring students to live consistent with biblical views on sexuality, could also be punished. Anyone who is offended by a statement, teaching, or practice with regard to sexual orientation and gender identity could file a lawsuit against a minister, counselor, author, store, or educational institution that offended them. (dailysignal.com,4/23/18; catholicworldreport.com,4/15/18; capoliticalreview.com, 4/2/18; dailywire.com,4/18/18) "Without freedom of Thought, there can be no such thing as Wisdom; and no such thing as public Liberty without freedom of Speech." The talk will analyze the Exhortation s summary of the two Synods on Marriage and the Family. How does the Exhortation help us prepare couples for marriage? Does the Exhortation say anything about annulments for those whose marriages have ended in divorce? Why is there such controversy about the Pope s mention of the internal forum?
