Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group TEACHER BIBLE STUDY The Last Supper John 13 17 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, had approached the religious leaders. For 30 pieces of silver, Judas agreed to betray Jesus. (Matt. 26:14-16) Hundreds of years before Jesus birth, David prophesied the Messiah would be betrayed by a close friend one who broke bread with Him. (Ps. 41:9) Jesus knew Judas Iscariot s true motivations from the moment Jesus called him to be a disciple. (John 6:70-71; 13:18-19; 17:12.) Jesus death and resurrection was God s plan from the very beginning. (Acts 2:23) During the Passover meal on the night He was betrayed, Jesus did something very unusual. Knowing that His death was near, Jesus washed His disciples feet even the feet of Judas. (See John 13:2-11.) Jesus set forth an example of love and humility for His disciples to mirror in their own actions towards each other. (John 13:14-16) After Judas left to betray Jesus, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him (John 13:31). He told His disciples He would prepare a place for them (John 14:1-4), promised that the Holy Spirit would come to them (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7-14), warned them about the trials they would face as His followers (John 16:1-4,33), and encouraged them through prayer (John 17:9-19). Jesus also prayed for all who would believe the gospel from their testimony. (John 17:20-26) Then Jesus led them to the garden where He was betrayed and arrested. In the Old Testament, God made a covenant or promise with His people. He gave them commandments to follow so they could live in right relationship with Him. God s people broke the covenant. They didn t obey God, and they didn t love Him. Jesus made a new covenant by dying on the cross. He brought forgiveness and made the way for people to know and love God again. When believers participate in the Lord s Supper, they remember the last night of Jesus life, when He prepared to take God s wrath upon His sinless shoulders. Believers also proclaim His death and resurrection until He returns for His church, like He promised. (John 17:24; 1 Cor. 11:26) OLDER KIDS BIBLE STUDY OVERVIEW Session Title: The Last Supper Bible Passage: John 13 17 Key Passage: Romans 6:9 Big Picture Question: Why did Jesus wash His disciples feet? Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Welcome time Activity page (5 minutes) Session starter (10 minutes) Key passage activity (5 minutes) Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group Small Group Time THE BIBLE STORY The Last Supper John 13 17 Bible story review (10 minutes) Activity choice (10 minutes) Journal (5 minutes) Prayer (5 minutes) Judas, one of Jesus disciples, went to the religious leaders. What will you give me if I hand Jesus over to you? he asked. The religious leaders showed Judas 30 silver coins, and he agreed to help them arrest Jesus. So Judas waited for the right time to turn against Jesus. When the Passover meal was ready, Jesus and His disciples reclined at the table. Jesus knew His time on earth was almost over and He would soon return to the Father in heaven. Jesus loved His disciples to the end, and He wanted to show them His love. Jesus got up from the table, laid aside His outer robe, and wrapped a towel around His waist. Then He poured water into a basin and began washing His disciples feet. In Bible times, a servant would wash someone s feet when he entered a house. Jesus the King of kings was doing what a servant would do! Peter did not want Jesus to wash his feet. You will never wash my feet ever! Peter said. Jesus replied, If I don t wash you, you have no part with Me. Peter said, Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head. Jesus told Peter that one who has bathed only needs to wash his feet because he is already clean. Jesus wasn t talking about physical cleanliness. He was talking about someone who has been forgiven of his sins by repenting and trusting in Jesus. A Christian should repent when he sins, but he only needs to receive salvation once. Then Jesus put on His robe again and reclined at the table. While they were eating the Passover meal, Jesus said, I assure you: one of you will turn against Me. The disciples were very upset. They wanted to know who would turn against Jesus. John was sitting beside Jesus, so Peter motioned for him to ask, Lord, who is it? Jesus said, He s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it. Then Jesus dipped the bread and gave it to Judas. Jesus told Judas, What you re doing, do it quickly. Judas immediately left. The other disciples didn t understand why Judas left. They thought maybe Jesus had given Judas a special job to do for the Passover, or maybe Jesus wanted Judas to give money to the poor. After Judas left, Jesus told the disciples what was going to happen. Jesus said He was going away where the disciples could not follow Him. The disciples did not Unit 32 Session 2 Older Elementary 2

Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group understand. They thought Jesus meant He was going on a trip. The disciples were discouraged. They didn t understand why Jesus was talking this way! Jesus did not want them to be troubled. He said, If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that you can be with Me where I am. Jesus gave them a new command: Love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends. Jesus told His disciples that after He died, came back to life, and went to heaven, Jesus would send the Holy Spirit to be with them forever. The Holy Spirit would help them understand and remember what Jesus told them when He lived on earth. The Holy Spirit would also help sinners understand they need a Savior. Then Jesus prayed for His disciples. After the supper, Jesus and His disciples sang psalms and went to the Mount of Olives. Christ Connection: At the Passover, Jesus shared with the disciples His last meal before His death and resurrection. Jesus washed the disciples feet, something a lowly servant would do. Jesus showed His love even to His enemies when He washed Judas feet as well. As sinners, we are all enemies of God. But God proved His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) SMALL GROUP OPENING Session Title: The Last Supper Bible Passage: John 13 17 Big Picture Question: Why did Jesus wash His disciples feet? Jesus showed the disciples how to love and serve each other with humility. Key Passage: Romans 6:9 Unit Christ Connection: God s plan for redemption is fulfilled through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Welcome time sticky notes markers Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. As each kid arrives, give her a sticky note and marker. Ask kids to write down what they had for dinner the night before. Invite kids to compare their sticky notes with a friend. Mention that last week, kids learned about the Passover meal that Jesus shared with His disciples the night before He died. In today s Bible story, kids will learn about something special Jesus did for His disciples at the last supper. Unit 32 Session 2 Older Elementary 3

Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group Activity page (5 minutes) True or False? activity page, 1 per kid pencils Invite kids to complete the True or False? activity page. (Answer key: 1. False, they reclined; 2. False, during; 3. True; 4. True; 5. True; 6. False, the rooster would crow; 7. False, rooms or mansions; 8. False, the only way; 9. False, He called them friends; 10. False, He prayed for the disciples and all who would believe their testimony.) Say Last week, we learned about the Passover meal and Lord s Supper. Today we are going to learn about something special Jesus did for His disciples during the Passover meal. Session starter (10 minutes) Option 1: Shoe relay timer masking tape (optional) marker (optional) Invite kids to take off their shoes and pile them in the center of the room. Make sure any buckles are unbuckled and any shoelaces are untied. If some kids have very similar shoes, write their names on masking tape and stick the tape to the bottom of their shoes. Guide kids to line up single file. When you say go, the first kid in line will run to the pile, grab his shoes, put them on (even tying laces), and run back to tag the next kid in line. Time the kids to see if kids can complete the relay in less than five minutes. Play again as time allows, trying to complete the relay a minute faster. Say Great job! Shoes are a luxury that we sometimes take for granted. In Bible times, people wore sandals or walked barefoot everywhere they went. Can you imagine how dirty their feet may have been? Option 2: Make footprint art half- sheets of heavyweight paper, 1 per kid markers tempera paint paper plates art supplies hand wipes (for cleanup) Give each kid a half- sheet of heavyweight paper. Pour thin layers of tempera paint onto plates. Unit 32 Session 2 Older Elementary 4

Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group Demonstrate how to make a small footprint by pressing the side of your hand into the paint, and then pressing it onto the paper. Make the toes by dipping your finger into the paint and then placing five dots above the print made by your fist. Provide other craft items for kids to decorate their artwork. Say In our Bible story today, Jesus washed His disciples feet during dinner! We ll find out why in just a moment. SMALL GROUP LEADER Session Title: The Last Supper Bible Passage: John 13 17 Big Picture Question: Why did Jesus wash His disciples feet? Jesus showed the disciples how to love and serve each other with humility. Key passage activity (5 minutes) Key Passage Poster index cards laminator or clear contact plastic marker plastic tablecloth non- menthol shaving cream large plastic bowl filled with water towels (for cleanup) Allergy Alert Before the session, write one word of the key passage and Scripture reference on separate index cards. Laminate the index cards or cover them with clear contact plastic. Place a plastic tablecloth on a table and then arrange the index cards faceup on the table. Spray non- menthol shaving cream on each card to cover the word. Set a large plastic bowl filled with water at the end of the table. Invite kids to line up a few feet away from the table. When you say go, the first kid in line will run to the table, grab the first card, run to the bowl of water, dunk it in the water to wash off the shaving foam, read the card aloud, and run it back to its place on the table. The player will then tag the next kid in line who will do the same. Kids will continue washing the cards and returning them until all the cards are clean. Then read the key Unit 32 Session 2 Older Elementary 5

Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group passage together. Say Jesus got up from the table during His last Passover meal to wash His disciples feet. Jesus wanted to show His disciples how to take care of one another after He died. Our key passage reminds us that Jesus died, but Jesus will never die again. When we trust in Him, we have the hope of eternal life with Him too. Bible story review & Bible skills (10 minutes) Bibles, 1 per kid Small Group Visual Pack large bowl of water towels Option: Retell or review the Bible story using the bolded text of the Bible story script. Invite kids to open their Bibles to John 13 17. As you review the Last Supper, use a large bowl of water and demonstrate with a volunteer how Jesus would have washed the disciples feet. After you wash the volunteer s feet, ask her about how she felt while you were performing an act of service and love for her. Say Peter didn t think it was right for Jesus, His Lord and Savior, to wash his dirty feet. What did Jesus tell Peter? If Jesus didn t wash Peter s feet, Peter wouldn t have any part of Him. Then, Peter wanted Jesus to wash his head, hands, and feet! Jesus said a clean person doesn t need a bath. Jesus wasn t talking about physical cleanliness. He was talking about salvation. A Christian should repent whenever he sins, but he only needs to receive salvation once. If you choose to review with boys and girls how to become a Christian, explain that kids are welcome to speak with you or another teacher if they have questions. God rules. God created and is in charge of everything. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; Col. 1:16-17) We sinned. Since Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Rom. 3:23; 6:23) God provided. God sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. (John 3:16; Eph. 2:8-9) Jesus gives. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so we can be welcomed into God s family. (Rom. 5:8; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Pet. 3:18) We respond. Believe that Jesus alone saves you. Repent. Tell God that your faith is in Jesus. (Rom. 10:9-10,13) Unit 32 Session 2 Older Elementary 6

Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group Activity choice (10 minutes) Option 1: Memory game paper pencils Challenge the boys and girls to remember as many words as they can from the following list: dog, shovel, house, wagon, carrot, cat, car, rake, cake, hippo, fork, clock, tree, steeple, window, fish, flower, and sun. Recite the words slowly as kids listen, and then direct kids to write down all the words they can remember. Whoever remembered the most words wins. Consider playing multiple rounds. Say During the last supper, Jesus promised His disciples that when He died, rose from the dead, and then returned to heaven, He would send the Holy Spirit to help them. The Holy Spirit would help them remember everything Jesus taught them. Option 2: Compare bread bread with yeast unleavened bread butter or jam (optional) napkins Allergy Alert Provide samples of bread with yeast and unleavened bread such as pita bread for kids to try. You may also provide butter or jam. Remind kids that another name for Passover was the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The Passover was supposed to remind God s people that God brought them out of Egypt in the middle of the night, so they didn t have time to let their bread dough rise. Say Jesus ate the Passover meal with His disciples the night before He died. We remember that event as the last supper. During the last supper, Jesus washed His disciples feet. Why did Jesus wash His disciples feet? Jesus showed the disciples how to love and serve each other with humility. Unit 32 Session 2 Older Elementary 7

Sunday, Mar 22, 2015 Kidzone 2nd- 4th Grade Small Group Journal and prayer (5 minutes) pencils Bibles Journal Page, 1 per kid Just the Right Time activity page, 1 per kid Give each kid his journal and a pencil. Direct kids to look up John 13:1-5. Talk about what it means that Jesus knew God the Father had given everything into Jesus hands. (John 13:3) Explain that the Father had given Jesus power over everything. Jesus knew this. He remember that He had come to earth from heaven as God s plan to save sinners, and He knew He would return to God in heaven. Remind the kids that just a few hours after this meal, Jesus was betrayed, arrest, beaten, mocked, and nailed to a cross where He died. Invite kids to write down their thoughts. Kids may also draw a picture of Jesus washing His disciples feet. Say Why did Jesus wash His disciples feet? Jesus showed the disciples how to love and serve each other with humility. Jesus showed His love to His enemies when He washed Judas feet as well. As sinners, we are all enemies of God. But God proved His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) As time allows, lead kids to complete the activity page Just the Right Time. Help kids understand that people who have repented of their sins, who trust in Jesus as Savior and Lord, and who have followed with believer s baptism can participate in the Lord s Supper. Make sure kids know they can talk with you, a parent, or kids minister if they have questions about salvation or participating in the Lord s Supper. Dismiss to parents Make sure to check security tags when dismissing children. Unit 32 Session 2 Older Elementary 8
