2013-2014 Annual Financial Report Mennonitee Education Agency

My Mennonite education was an important part of shaping me into the person I am today, said Jennifer Steiner, a 2007 graduate of Goshen College. Young adulthoodd is a time of many changes, and I am grateful to have been in the environment at Goshen College during those formative years. As my faith continues to mature, the Mennonite church, and individuals from within it, continues to play an important role in my life. Staying connected and serving the church is important to many graduates of Mennonite educational institutions. Jennifer is one example of many. She is communications coordinator for MCC Great Lakes in Goshen, Ind. and is active in her local congregation, Olive Mennonite Church. Whether it is planning and leading worship, playing softball for the church league or serving on committee to choose new carpet, Jennifer is thankful for the opportunity to be part of something bigger than herself. Her time at Goshen College played a role in her faith formation and commitmentt to Mennonite Church USA. Jennifer says, Attending Goshenn College allowed me to come into my own understanding and ownership of my Mennonite faith. Mennonite education is strengthening the church andd raising leaders for local congregations who have made a choice to claim Mennonite faith and values as their own. Many congregations and individuals have given faithfully too Mennonitee education which fosterss a positive life transforming education that prepares students for a life of faith and service. We appreciate all who support MEA and the Mennonite institutions in helping to make faith-based education a reality for a new generation of students. This year more than 12,800 students are receiving the opportunity to grow in faith at one of the Mennonite educational institutions. Thank you to those who are partnering with us as togetherr we make a difference in changing the world, one student at a time. God s peace be with you, Carlos Romero Executivee Director 1

Church giving to Mennonite higher education institutions and MEA Thanks to congregations and conferences! Congregations and conferences contribute to Mennonite higher education institutions, Mennonite Education Agency (MEA), the Racial/Ethnic Leadership Education programs, and Hispanic Pastoral and Leadership Education in a variety of ways. We are very thankful for their support! Most church giving comes through the congregational giving system which allocates a congregation s gift according to its preference designated to certain Mennonite higher education institutions or to Mennonite education as a whole. Options within the congregational giving system: Mennonite Church USA congregations are identified as designated or unified. Designated means the congregation designates its gift to specific institutions. Unified means that a congregation s gift will benefit all higher education institutions and MEA. Congregations can also choose to give to the seminary pool or to the college pool. Why is a unified giving option included? One congregational check can be sent to MEA for Mennonite higher education institutions instead of sending multiple checks to different institutions. Supporting Mennonite education as a whole eases a congregation s decision-making regarding which specific colleges, universities and seminaries to support. Due to the mobility of church members and attenders, there are alumni and supporters of most of the Mennonite higher education institutions in many congregations. The graph below shows congregational giving since the 2007-2008 fiscal year. $1,000,000 $800,000 $600,000 $400,000 CONGREGATIONAL GIVING TO HIGHER EDUCATION SINCE FISCAL YEAR ENDING 2008 $956,420 $868,191 $854,410 $856,597 $711,921 $698,099 $657,110 We are also aware of and thankful for church and conference financial support of Mennonite Schools Council (MSC), its member schools, and Mennonite early childhood centers affiliated with Mennonite Early Childhood Network. At this point MEA does not collect that information. $200,000 $ 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2

Church Tuition Grants Congregations also give money through church tuition grants for their students attending Mennonite educational institutions. Mennonite higher education institutions match the money that a congregation gives up to a certain amount. These gifts are not used for the overall operations of the educational institution. The graph below shows congregational giving for church tuition grants since the 2007-2008 fiscal year. $3,000,000 CHURCH TUITION GRANTS $2,500,000 $2,000,000 $1,500,000 $1,000,000 $500,000 $- $2,485,914 $2,540,288 $2,382,988 $2,179,026 $2,212,939 $2,172,291 $1,938,851 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 The graph below illustrates overall church support church tuition grants plus general gifts for Mennonite higher education institutions since the 2007-2008 fiscal year. On the following pages, we have listed those congregations who gave during the 2013-2014 fiscal year (July 1, 2013- June 30, 2014). The list has been divided by the recipient (higher education institutions and MEA, RELE and HPLE). This means a congregation could be listed more than once. $4,000,000 $3,500,000 $3,000,000 $2,500,000 $2,000,000 $1,500,000 $1,000,000 $500,000 $0 TOTAL CONGREGATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS AND TUITION GRANTS $3,442,334 $3,408,479 $3,237,398 $3,035,623 $2,924,860 $2,870,390 $2,595,961 Thanks again for your support of Mennonite education! 3
