N OV E M B E R 12-13, 2 016 GOSPEL REFLECTION THE PSTOR S CORNER Saint Cecilia One of the many things I love about our parish is the music and our choir. St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music, so it is no wonder that we are gifted in that area. Thanks to our choir director, Bob Kellison, we have a large choir that has been able to bring sacred music to all of our liturgies. If you know of any parishioners who are looking for a ministry and have the desire to sing, please ask them to join our choir. If you have the gift of song, being a part of our choir gives you the chance to share your gift and talent and that is true stewardship. If you don t feel like you can commit to participating in the choir, then sing out in your pew! Singing is the highest form of praise, and as St. ugustine said, He who sings prays twice! men? men! LUKE 21:5-19 by FTHER JSON WILLIMS By your perseverance you will secure your lives. Throughout Luke s account of the Gospel he weaves a thread that holds much of his entire work together. Time and again the distinction between worldly things and those of heaven comes to the fore in the teachings and parables of Jesus. With that in mind we can better grasp what our Lord wants to bring to our attention in this passage before us today. Otherwise it s difficult to overcome the seeming contradiction between the they will put some of you to death and the not a hair on your head will be destroyed. In short, the Lord s reminding us that it s not just about this life. We are destined for something much greater: the unending life of heaven. t some point in time each of us will reach the end of our earthly life. There is nothing we can do to change that. However, we hope that when that moment does arrive and we stand before the merciful Judge, we will have persevered in cooperating with his grace so as to secure our future, eternal happiness: the fullness of life in union with our loving God. May the God who constantly invites each of us into a deeper communion of life and love with him also grant us the gift of persevering in his grace. May he strengthen us by his love, feed us with Word and Sacrament, and spur us on to eternal life through the hope of the Resurrection. 3

SINT CECILI ROMN CTHOLIC PRISH C L OSER LOOK T O UR FITH Catechesis How can Sacred Scripture be truth if not everything in it is right? The Bible is not meant to convey precise historical information or scientific findings to us. Moreover, the authors were children of their time. They shared the cultural ideas of the world around them and often were also dominated by its errors. Nevertheless, everything that man must know about God and the way of his salvation is found with infallible certainty in Sacred Scripture. [106-107, 109]. (YOUCT question 14) Liturgical Facts We continue our mini-series on the liturgical vestments of the priest and deacon. Today, we shall focus on the next liturgical vestment: the dalmatic. The dalmatic is a long widesleeved tunic worn by a deacon at Mass, which serves as a liturgical vestment in the Church. It may also be worn by bishops above the alb and below the chasuble, though this use would be infrequent. Like the chasuble worn by priests and bishops, it is an outer vestment and is supposed to match the liturgical color of the day. In 18th-century vestment fashion, it is customary to slit the underside of the sleeves so that the dalmatic becomes a mantle like a scapular with an opening for the head and two square pieces of the material falling from the shoulder over the upper arm. Modern dalmatics tend to be longer and have closed sleeves, with the sides being open below the sleeve. The distinctive ornamentation of the vestment consists of two vertical stripes running from the shoulder to the hem. THE QUOTE OF THE WEEK Only when we meet the living God in Christ do we know what life is. There is nothing more beautiful than to be surprised by the Gospel by the encounter with Christ. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Know Your Saints SINT JOSPHT was born John Kuncevic in the Ukraine around 1580. He worked as a merchant until 1604, when he became a monk of the Ukrainian Order of Saint Basil and took the name Josaphat. Five years later, he was ordained a priest of the Byzantine Church. People came to him for spiritual advice. They were moved by his preaching and by his life, for he fasted often and was faithful to the prayers and customs of the people. In his thirties, he was made bishop of Vitebsk and then archbishop of Polotsk. He found the diocese in terrible condition, and he saw much unrest among the people. Josaphat had been raised in the Byzantine culture, and he was also faithful to the rule of the Church of Rome. There were strong groups, however, who opposed Rome and Latin rule. These people named their own bishop. Disturbances broke out as people took sides. Josaphat decided to go to Vitebsk, the center of the disturbance. While Josaphat was there, a priest named Elias kept shouting insults at him. deacon had the priest locked up. The mob rioted and demanded the release of Elias. He was released, but the angry mob broke through all barriers until they made their way to Bishop Josaphat. They beat him and then shot him to death on November 12, 1623. The man who had worked for unity all his life was killed by a violent mob. People were shocked, and much honor was paid to his memory. www.loyolapress.com 4

NOVEMBER 12-13, 2016 PSTOR S R M B L I NGS HLLOWEEN PRDE: Our schoolchildren in grades pre-k to 3rd grade dressed up in their Halloween costumes for a parade on Oct. 28. It was so fun to watch the little ones as they waved to the school parents and neighbors during their parade. There was also a Halloween festival in the gym for the older kids (photos, above). Thank you to our PTO for putting on such a fun event. 1 LL SINTS PRDE: We had a wonderful turnout at our annual saint parade on Sunday, Oct. 30, at the 10:00 Mass (photos, below). The children were adorable in their saint costumes. I was not able to be at that Mass, but I was glad Fr. Jason was able to house. It is always nice to visit a parishioner s house and do a house blessing. Thank you, Fraziers, for the hospitality. 1 QUINCENER: On Sunday, Oct. 22, Mariana Gomez Huerta (photo, left) celebrated her Quinceanera at St. Cecilia, and it was a lovely Mass. Her parents did a wonderful job making all of the special details of their 15-year-old daughter s Quinceanera special, especially her dress and the court of boys and girls who escorted her in during the procession. If you are interested in having your daughter s Quinceanera Mass at St. Cecilia and would like to join our parish, please contact Lilia at Liliaperezb@gmail.com. We will be able to have the Quinceanera Mass on the third Sunday of the month at our monthly Spanish Mass. 1 be the celebrant and experience this wonderful day. Thank you to all of the parents who took the time to dress up their children. lso, a big thank-you to our Worship Commission for the cookies and drinks and to Cody and ngela Egner for their hard work at making this happen, as well as taking pictures, which are posted on our Facebook page. 1 HOUSE BLESSING: I was able to bless parishioners dam and Maria Frazier s house a few Saturdays ago. I loved the prayer area (photo, left) in their BPTISMS: Peter ugustine, son of parishioners Ryan and Kristen Leep (photo, above left), was baptized Oct. 23. Welcome, child of God! 1 CONGRTULTIONS! Kate Laage and Robert Cunningham (photo, above right) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Saturday, Oct. 29. 5

SINT CECILI ROMN CTHOLIC PRISH SMSJ dult Ministry Monthly Talk Please join us on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 1 PM in the undercroft/cafeteria of St. Margaret-St. John Church for a panel of recently ordained priests and deacons who will discuss the importance of the Mass for them and for all Catholics. No matter how busy life may get, the Mass is always the center of the day. Learn how to make that possible and what to do when it seems loved ones no longer appreciate the gift of the Mass. Refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there! Gift Bearers Needed We are in need of additional gift bearers at all of the Masses, but especially the 4PM Saturday and 8M Sunday Masses. Contact Joanne Brinkman at jmbrinkman@ zoomtown.com or 871-3230 if you are interested in taking part in the Mass in this way. NFP Facilitators Needed re you and your spouse interested in becoming more involved in the parish? re you passionate about Natural Family Planning (NFP)? We have the perfect ministry opportunity for you! St. Cecilia Parish is looking to grow our Marriage Preparation Ministry and is in need of a volunteer couple to lead our monthly Natural Family Planning Classes. We need someone who would be willing to facilitate a 2-hour class each month for our engaged couples preparing for marriage in our parish. We currently promote the method taught by Couple-to-Couple League (ccli.org). The training to be NFP facilitators with Couple-to-Couple League is free and can be done completely online. This is a volunteer opportunity for a married couple.
