St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey 07936 www.saintroseoflimachurch.org Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 26, 2016 It was with great sadness last Friday that Fr. Matthew and I concelebrated the last Mass for the Academy of St. Rose. For more than fifty years our parish and school parents sacrificed to make our school a wonderful place to learn in a Christcentered environment. Sadly in the last ten years or so in the State of New Jersey and East Hanover is no exception, many younger couples don t value Catholic education and spend their money in different ways. I m very grateful to the tithing parishioners and to our parent body who worked hard these past years to subsidize our school despite a shrinking enrollment. As I had mentioned previously, the public school system is starting a full day Kindergarten program this coming September and where we would have approximately sixteen children register for Kindergarten, this year only four showed an interest in registering. This past year we had sixteen in our Kindergarten class and only eight parents decided to re-register. I mailed a survey to the parents in early December and I was shocked and saddened to see only sixty-four children would be returning in September. A school certainly cannot survive academically, socially, or financially with a student population of sixty-four. In December I met with the pastors and principals of St. Vincent School in Madison and St. Patrick School in Chatham to secure enough space for our families who would choose Catholic education. In September our children will attend St. Vincent s, St. Patrick s, two children will attend Holy Family, three children will attend All Saints in Parsippany, one child will attend Our Lady of the Lake in Verona, one child will attend Trinity Academy in Caldwell, and one child will attend St. Cassian in Montclair. The rest of our children will attend our local public school. I look forward to working with our children who will be attending the local Academies and the children attending public school. Our prayers and gratitude surround Ms. Tomlinson, our teachers and staff as they begin a new phase in their lives. A big thank you to the Knights of Columbus for organizing the Mass in the Park and picnic last Saturday. A good time was had by all. Please enjoy the pictures inside the bulletin. We re happy to welcome back seminarian Andrew. He will remain with us for the next eight weeks. He arrived from Rome last Friday. I look forward to mentoring him in the next several weeks. Andrew will begin a six week Scripture series on Tuesday, June 28 th concluding on August 2 nd. There are two sessions one at 9:30am and the other at 7:00pm. You can choose to go either morning or evening depending on your schedule. The lectures will take place in the cafeteria located under the church. Each session lasts approximately one hour. Congratulations to the seniors at Hanover Park High School who graduated this past week. We wish them well as they move on into college, begin military training, and enter trade school. May God bless and guide them in the years ahead. Father Owen

NEWS FROM ROME Today, Tuesday June 21, I am writing to you from the seminary in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. While you are reading this I will already have arrived in Athens. I am on a road trip through the Balkan states before preparing to start my work in Greece, helping with Syrian refugees. It has been an amazing opportunity to see a part of the world that many travelers unfortunately miss. I started my journey in Split, Croatia, which is the home to Emperor Diocletian s Place, built in 305 AD. Due to different wars and periods of occupation you can see the change in architecture, with many different Venetian gothic buildings, and up to the communist occupation with typical Soviet style constructions. Basically just think a big concrete box. I then made my way to Mostar, which is a small romantic town right on the river, filled with little shops and restaurants to visit. There is a darker side to Mostar in that you can see many remnants of the Bosnian War which lasted from 1992-1995. Many of the buildings have not been reconstructed due to a lack of funds, compared to Sarajevo, which has been able to rebuild. Regardless, Bosnia and Herzegovina truly is an amazing country and I have enjoyed driving through its mountains and valleys and just appreciating the beauty that God s hand has wrought. I will be continuing my journey into southern Serbia before making my way through Montenegro and finally back to Croatia, visiting Dubrovnik, my final stop before flying to Athens. I hope to tell you next week about these other places. Finally, I want to thank all of you who have prayed so diligently for me during my exams. I am glad to tell you that I have passed all my exams, and am now half way through seminary, 3 years done, 3 more to go. I know Andrew arrived last week and many have told me they are glad to have him back. I wish all of you a great summer, as schools begin to let out for the summer. Know that I bring all of you in prayer to every Church I visit along my journey. God Bless, Alex ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY NEXT MEETING: September 7 beginning with the Rosary at 7:00pm in church.
