O THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 13, 2019 Baptism of the Lord! In October, I had the privilege to go to the place where Jesus was Baptized in the Jordan by John the Baptist. We had to drive through a minefield to get to the location. The water was dirty and the river was not very impressive being small. Yet this insignificant river in a desert was where Jesus begins his mission as his identity is revealed to the world. Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His Baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's Baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's Baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His Baptism, Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's Baptism, the heavens were opened; at our Baptism, heaven was opened to us. At His Baptism, Jesus prayed; after our Baptism, we must pray to avoid actual sin. Financial Plan for the coming year Thank you for your continued support of our Church. We are blessed to have a stable and slightly growing collection during a time when most Parishes are showing declining membership and revenue. Last year we had to use our savings to meet our expenses last year. We had some major maintenance issues that were done which were not planned for that were to a large extent why we were unable to end the year in the black. We had a major repair on the parking lot, we had to replace part of the flooring in Augustine Center, and trimming trees and painting were some of the major maintenance expenses. The plan moving forward will seek to address some of the issues which contributed to the financial shortfall. 1. We have revived our Crab Feed fundraiser. 2. We will be raising funds for all of our Faith Formation Ministries by beginning the Scrip program in February. 3. We will seek to work with the school to better understand maintenance issues for the campus and distribute costs on use of our facilities. 4. We will work to give better information to you as a parishioner so you may understand our costs and seek to encourage all our families to help by contributing in our collections. 5. We are looking into providing new ways of contributing through electronic means. We also will continue our efforts to evangelize our community and grow our congregation. We have more baptisms, more members, more weddings, and our Whole Family Faith Formation continues to grow. Everything is about bringing people to Christ and supporting them through the Sacraments to live the faith. Blessings in the New Year! Fr. Thomas Czeck OFM Conv. Thank You for remembering me and the Friars at Christmas! On behalf of the Franciscans, thank you for your cards, gift cards, money, wine, coffee and delicious treats that you offered us at Christmas. I offered a Mass of Thanksgiving for all of you when I was on retreat. May the Lord bless you this year! Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from although the servers who had drawn the water knew, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. 1

For those in the Parish not using the offering envelope we ask you to prayerfully consider committing your support to our ministries, liturgies, outreach and all that a Parish is expected to provide its members and the members of the larger community in which we reside. May we continue to be good stewards of so great a gift and remember that God will not be outdone in generosity. 2018 MAINTENANCE FUND RESULTS Total Collection 2018 : $19,805 Total Budget 2018: $28,000 Total Property Repairs/ Improvements 2018: $63,161 We are grateful to all those who contribute to the monthly Grounds and Maintenance Fund. Your contributions allow us to make needed repairs and improvements to the property. Last year we took $35,000 from savings to address tree removal and maintenance as well as some needed asphalt repair. In total we spent $63,161 on repairs and maintenance. However, the $8,195 shortfall in budgeted Grounds and Maintenance meant that we had to defer some other needed repairs and improvements. Please consider a monthly contribution to the Grounds and Maintenance envelope as part of your monthly offering. YEARLY CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS For your convenience in preparing your tax return, a contribution statement for 2018 will be prepared at your request. Please phone the Parish Office at 537-0806, with your name and envelope number. Your statement will be available for you to pick up once it has been signed. 3 SUNDAY COLLECTION Stewardship of treasure involves trust in God.
