CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX SEPTEMBER 2, 2012 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I m sure most of us have heard it said that hope springs eternal in the human heart. We want to believe that, but frankly there are times when we have to wonder whether or not it s true. If we isolate individuals, then I suppose it is. Always there is someone somewhere with some kind of hope in his or her heart. But if we take the human race as a whole or in large segments, then we re not so certain. One does not have to dig very deep into the current human situation to find all kinds of people whose hearts are seemingly devoid of hope. How many people do we know who are looking toward tomorrow with a spirit of expectancy, there is a mood of resignation and futility. The prevailing attitude seems to be that we are on the downhill side of civilization. Cynicism has almost become a symbol of scholarship and sophistication, while optimism is regarded as a philosophical nursery reserved for those who are too blind to see or too weak to handle the hard realities of life. A cartoon showed four golfers on the 18 th green, about to finish their round for the day. In the distant background was the skyline of a city, above the city the familiar mushroom cloud caused by the explosion of an atomic bomb. The caption under the picture read: Go ahead and putt; the shock wave won t hit us for at least thirty seconds. That kind of fatal resignation has saturated our society more deeply than most of us realize. Well, I suppose, unyielding despair or quiet desperation are better than utter panic; but surely there is a brighter, more valid way with which to face the daily challenges of living. In the midst of many uncertainties in life, one truth has become unmistakably clear, and that is this: If you and I are to face the future with any kind of hope, we must find that hope in the midst of trouble. And that is the theme of one of Jesus teachings in the gospel. Jesus told His disciples and He also indicated that in the midst of that trouble is where we most clearly see His great power and glory. And that is a lesson that we most desperately need to learn. Far too often, our outlook on life is nothing but a reaction to current events. If things look good, we are hopeful. If things go bad, we lose heart. We are like weather vanes, changing with every change of the wind optimistic today, pessimistic tomorrow. What we really need in this kind of world is to wrap our minds around something solid and hold on to that through fair weather and foul. That s what Jesus encourages us to do. Real hope is never just a happy mood borrowed from fortunate circumstances. Real hope, genuine hope, lasting hope is the outgrowth of a certain kind of faith. If a person believes that this is God s world and the final say belongs to Him, then the future is hopeful, however troubled the present might be. Our human heart needs to be filled with faith in the living God. Then a person has hold of something solid that enables him or her to hope, even in the midst of trouble. MANY THANKS We are most grateful to all our wonderful parishioners who have sacrificed so generously by increasing their weekly Sunday contributions. Please know that your weekly increase is for the betterment of St. Theresa Parish, for the building up and improvement of our parish. We are most grateful to all of you who have helped to make a difference in our community. Please continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa Parish the vital, growing parish that it is. We are the only parish in our immediate area with the lowest Sunday collection. We need to keep up with our neighbors. Your help is vital. Thanks for all you do! Someone on our RCIA team will return your call and set a time to speak with you about this important decision. The RCIA is a vital source of renewal for our own parish community, not only because new members join the parish, but also because our personal witness, our worship service, and our teaching will offer the support necessary for the men and women who seek to become part of the Catholic Church. If you are thinking about entering more fully into the Catholic Church, pray about it, call the parish, and let the Lord do the rest. ST.
