One of the greatest challenges for young people has always been to take risks and dare to try new things. Without taking risks and daring to accept new experiences young people cannot grow. It is no wonder that children find great joy in daring (and double daring) other kids to do things they have never done before. To take risks and face unknown dangers is how we learn and grow. During this Vocations awareness month we are asking the young people of our parish to dare to think about a life of service to God and the Church. Today it isn t enough to be aware of the need for vocations, everybody knows there is a shortage of priests and religious, we see it all around us and in every parish. What we need to do is go one step further and help young people see that there is a value in daring to become a priest or a nun and then support those who take the risk of choosing a life of service in the Church. Who are we looking for? What qualifications should a young person who feels called to the priesthood or religious life have? The best candidates for priesthood and religious life are healthy and happy, with a love of God and other people that is evident in service to others. To spell this out a bit, this person is an active member of the Catholic Church, is in generally good physical and emotional health, has average intelligence, works well with a variety of people, has friends, has leadership ability and is serious about growing spiritually. This is a person who has a generally positive outlook on life and a sense of purpose, as well as a sense of humor. He or she can choose celibacy as a way of loving. If you know of someone who likes to take risks, dare them to consider a vocation to the priesthood or religious life and then support them with your prayers. Fr. Jack WELCOME BACK FR. ALBINO!! This week we are very happy to welcome back to St. Bernard s Parish Fr. Albino Barrera, OP, who since 2015 has helped us with weekend Masses. He has been away from us for over a year now on a sabbatical. He has returned to teaching at Providence College and we are very happy that he is returning to us. You will see him during the coming weeks. This week he is celebrating the 8:30 AM Mass on Sunday. Giving Thanks for Your Goodness Today I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of our parishioners who contributed so very generously to this year s ANNUAL COLLECTION. We are grateful to the many who have already given to our Annual Collection because it is a boost to our parish economy. To date, we have received 50,405.00. This will go a long way toward ending our budget deficit for the year. May God reward you for your great generosity. Fr. Unsworth 2

Announcements Wed 1/23 Thu 1/24 Sun 1/27 Upcoming Meetings Men of St. Joseph, Small Conference Room 7:00 PM Adult Choir, Large Meeting Room 6:45 PM Grades 6 & 7 (Pre- Confirmation), Parish Hall Grades 8 & 9 (Confirmation 1&2), Parish Hall 5:00 PM 5:00 PM Treasures from Our Tradition The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal.
