By God s grace, we gather to glorify him and grow in his Word, and to go with it into his world. Welcome! We re delighted that you ve joined us today! May God bless our time together as we hear his Word and life-giving promises and offer to him our prayers and praises. May we also serve as a source of encouragement to each other as members of the body of Christ. Today s Theme: The long-expected Christ has arrived; the waiting is over as the Son of David is anointed. The Father s approval sounds from heaven and book-ends the season of Epiphany, when with the Holy Spirit and with power it thunders again on the Mount of Transfiguration as the Son is revealed in glory. Today s Service is printed for you in its entirety in this worship folder. It will also be displayed on the projection screen up front. You may also use the red hymnal in the rack in front of you if you wish to view the musical notes for the hymns. Prayer Before Worship: Revealed Savior of the world and Beloved of the Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving-kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts so that, with undivided attention, I may hear your voice and sing your praises. Amen. A Friendship Register is located in each row, toward the center aisle. We ask that before worship or during the offering you fill those out completely with all the information requested and pass them down the row to your neighbor. Be sure to check any applicable boxes. Restrooms are located in our lower level. Head down the stairs to the right as you exit the worship space. Activity Bags for younger children are hanging from a rack in the entryway. Feel free to grab one if it can help to keep your little ones occupied during the service. Closing Hymn God s Own Child, I Gladly Say It (CWS 737) Gathering Rite on Holy Baptism Greeting God s people long to gather together for strength from God and for mutual encouragement. This alternate beginning for worship is intended for use not only when there is a baptism but may be used on any occasion to remind God s people of Baptism s continuing blessings. In the name of the Father and of the Son [ ] and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. During the introduction to the hymn, water is poured into the font as a visible reminder of baptism. Responsive Verses Amen, Amen, I tell you: Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God! Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh. Whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. 1 Certainly, we were guilty when we were born. We were sinful when our mothers conceived us. 2 But we were washed, we were sanctified, we were justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 3 [10] 1 John 3:5,6 (EHV) 2 Psalm 51:5 (EHV) 3 1 Corinthians 6:11 (EHV) [3]

Thank-Offering Thanksgiving These offerings are used to support the ministries of our church, both locally and worldwide. Our guests should not feel compelled to give an offering, but may do so if they desire. Prayer of the Church The Lord s Prayer Confession of Sins As baptized children of God, we confess our sins. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Closing Prayer Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Blessing Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and [ ] give you peace. [4] [9]

Gospel Lesson Luke 3:15-17,21,22 (EHV) The word of the Lord through John and the waters of his baptism powerfully proclaimed preparation for the arrival of the Messiah. For he would come with justice to rule the people with equity. At his own baptism, Jesus is anointed with the Holy Spirit and power as our Prophet, Priest, and King to the approval of the Father. Just as he who knew no sin was baptized, our baptism is also an anointing by the Spirit, but for the forgiveness of our sins. This is our connection to Christ and his redeeming work. 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ. 16 John answered them all, I baptize you with water. But someone mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean out his threshing floor. He will gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. While he was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you. this is the Gospel of our Lord. Announcement of Forgiveness (Absolution) Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, by cleansing her with the washing of water in connection with the Word. He did this so that he could present her to himself as a glorious church, having no stain or wrinkle or any such thing, but so that she would be holy and blameless. 4 Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son [ ] and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Holy Baptism may follow, after which the following stanza is sung. Children s Message Hymn of the Day To Jordan s River Came Our Lord (CW 89) Sermon Titus 3:4-7 The Apostles Creed Unwrap the Gifts of Baptism. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. [8] 4 Ephesians 5:25-27 (EHV) [5]

First Lesson The Word 1 Samuel 16:1-13 (EHV) Young David is anointed by Samuel to Shepherd the Lord s people, Israel. Centuries later would come fulfillment with the anointing of the Christ and the Lord s royal priesthood of all believers. 1 The LORD said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I see a king for myself among his sons. 2 Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me. The LORD said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the person that I point out to you. 4 So Samuel did what the LORD had told him to do and went to Bethlehem. Trembling with fear, the elders of the city came to meet him. They said, Do you come in peace? 5 He said, Yes, in peace. I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. He consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they had come, he looked at Eliab and said, Certainly this is the LORD s anointed. 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at how tall he is, because I have rejected him. For the LORD does not look at things the way man does. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, The LORD has not chosen this one either. 9 Then Jesse had Shammah pass by. But Samuel said, The LORD has not chosen this one either. 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, The LORD has not chosen any of these. 11 Samuel said to Jesse, Is that all of the young men? Jesse said, There still is the youngest, but he is tending the sheep. Samuel said to Jesse, Send for him, for we cannot sit down to eat until he comes. 12 He sent for him and brought him in. David had red hair and striking eyes, and was good-looking. The LORD said, Get up! Anoint him, because this is the one. 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers. The Spirit of the LORD rushed on David with power from that day forward. After that Samuel set out and returned to Ramah. Psalm of the Day Psalm 2 (EHV) The one who is seated in heaven laughs. * The Lord scoffs at them. Then he speaks to them in his anger and in his wrath he terrifies them. * I have installed my King on Zion, my holy mountain. I will proclaim the decree of the LORD. * He said to me: You are my Son. Today I have begotten you. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain Second Lesson Titus 3:4-7 (EHV) Baptism brings the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Christ and David were anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power. When we were baptized, the Spirit was poured out on us as well. It was a washing that brought rebirth for sin-deadened hearts and spiritual renewal for fleshly minds. Note how onesided our baptism is! Like David, there was nothing in us that the Lord should choose us. But as young David was chosen over his older brothers and made into Israel s king, so we who are worth nothing, become what God makes us: heirs having the hope of eternal life. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior toward mankind appeared, 5 he saved us not by righteous works that we did ourselves, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and the renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs in keeping with the hope of eternal life. Verse of the Day Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you. Alleluia. Mark 1:11b (EHV) Why do the nations rage? * Why do the peoples grumble in vain? The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers join together against the LORD * and against his Anointed One. Refrain [6] [7]
