From the Desk of...ann Hook Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 20, 2019 To Jesus Through Mary Mary, Jesus, and his disciples are at wedding feast. The wine runs short; an extremely embarrassing situation for the hosts. Mary observes the situation with compassion and wants to help. She knows Jesus is able to help and asks him to do so. However, he seems reluctant and answers, Woman, how does your concern affect me? With the confidence of a mother, Mary instructs the waiters to Do whatever he tells you. As I reflected upon this Gospel, my mind kept returning to the Marian devotion, Mary, Undoer of Knots. This devotion encourages us to entrust Mary with the problems and challenges (tangles and knots) in our lives. This devotion developed from a painting at the Church of Saint Peter in Augsburg, Germany. In the painting, Mary is undoing knots in a ribbon. The ribbon refers to the German wedding ribbon, which signifies the unity of the bride and groom. Supposedly, this painting was commissioned in thanksgiving for the healing of a troubled marriage. In recent years devotion to Mary, Undoer of Knots has become prominent with the help of Pope Francis. Mary interceded with Jesus on behalf of the host of the wedding feast. Her concern became Jesus concern. The knot caused by the lack of wine was undone when the waiters followed Jesus instruction. When we entrust the knots in our lives to Mary, she will intercede for us as well. However, we must also remember our part, to Do whatever he tells you.
