June 18, 2017 + The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ HAPPY FATHER S DAY! May God bless all the fathers, stepfathers and godfathers living and deceased of our parish on this Father s Day! We honor these men with our annual Father s Day Novena, beginning today, Sunday, June 18. Enrollment envelopes can be found at the back of the church. May St. Joseph, model of Christian fatherhood, intercede, guide and pray for them. Oremus pro invicem. Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway Page Three CORPUS CHRISTI Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Our annual Corpus Christi Procession from the church to the cemetery takes places following the 5 p.m. Mass on Sunday, followed by ice cream in the courtyard of the Fr. Rankin House at 314 Duke Street! This is a good time to remind ourselves of the outward signs of reverence due to the Most Blessed Sacrament. We as Catholics believe that Christ, our King, is truly present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist. Our interior attitude and exterior actions should always reflect that belief. ST. MARY PARISH STAFF Sheena Byrne, Receptionist 703.836.4100 x 3015 / sbyrne@stmaryoldtown.org David Elliott, Music Director 703.836.4100 x 3019 / delliott@stmaryoldtown.org Carmen Federle, Parish Liaison to Diocesan Office for the Protection of Children and Young People cfederle@stmaryoldtown.org Melanie Graves, Director of Religious Education 703.836.4100 x 3023 / mgraves@stmaryoldtown.org John Harchick, Director of Facilities 703.836.4100 x 3021 / jharchick@stmaryoldtown.org John Lilly, Director of Communications and Evangelization 703.836.4100 x 3009 / jlilly@stmaryoldtown.org Emily Liutkus, Bookkeeper 703.836.4100 x 3010 / eliutkus@stmaryoldtown.org Diane Maple, Bulletin Editor 703.836.4100 x 3032 / bulletin@stmaryoldtown.org Hilary Munger, Assistant Director of Religious Education 703.836.4100 x 3033 / hmunger@stmaryoldtown.org Elena Otero-Bigg, Office Manager/Assistant to the Pastor 703.836.4100 x 3018 / ebigg@stmaryoldtown.org Arragon Perrone, Director of Youth and Young Adults 703.836.4100 x 3024 / aperrone@stmaryoldtown.org Naomi Roberts, Part-Time Administration 703.836.4100 Kristin Smith, Office Administrator 703.836.4100 x 3029 / ksmith@stmaryoldtown.org Trish Weiler, Business Manager 703.836.4100 x 3011 / tweiler@stmaryoldtown.org Upon entering and leaving the church, we greet Our Lord in the tabernacle by genuflecting on one knee. If we are unable, due to illness or disability, to genuflect, then a reverent bow from the waist is appropriate. While Mass is not a fashion show, the way we dress is a sign of respect for others and for Our Lord, calling for Our Sunday Best. Something to keep in mind as the warmer summer months allow us to dress somewhat more casually, but always with good taste and modesty. A respectful silence in church allows others to pray and creates an atmosphere of reverential awe in the presence of God. This is true not only before Mass begins but after Mass as well. After the final hymn ends and before leaving our pew, we should pause for a brief prayer of thanksgiving. These outward signs of reverence toward Our Lord in the Eucharist show our great love for Him, a reflection of the love He shows us each and every day. SACRED HEART OF JESUS Friday, June 23, is the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. In fact, the entire month of June is devoted to the Sacred Heart. The prayer of the Church venerates and honors the Heart of Jesus. It adores the incarnate Word and His Heart which, out of love for men, He allowed to be pierced by our sins. (Catechism of the Catholic Church) Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Pray for, protect and sanctify our priests. FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM As part of this year s Fortnight for Freedom (June 21 through July 4), we will have Sung Vespers in the church at 7 p.m. on June 29, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. Please join us that evening in praying with these princes of the Apostles for greater respect and protection for our religious freedom.
