Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast Please be mindful... It has been brought to our attention that some of the neighbors around St. Peter Damian have had their driveways blocked during Mass. We understand that some parishioners choose to park on the street but please be mindful of our neighbors and do not block their driveways. There is a possibility you will be towed. On Saturday, January 12th all the volunteers from St. Peter Damian Church were invited to attend a continental breakfast serving breakfast casseroles, pastries, fruit and beverages. We had volunteers from Ministers of Care, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Youth Group, Religious Education Catechists, Women of Grace, Lectors, Ushers, and many others. Fr. Chris said a prayer over all those that attended and said a blessing for all the food. Without all of these volunteers we would not be able to have a vibrant, faith filled and amazing presence here at St. Peter Damian. Our thanks to the Social Life Committee for hosting this special event and to all the volunteers that give of themselves, their time and talent to the church. If there is anyone interested in joining any of these ministries please contact the parish office. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: It is more blessed to give than to receive. Cremation in the Catholic Church The Vatican s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued an Instruction about burial for the faithful. These regulations are designed to give you, the faithful, the sense of peace that can only come from knowing that your loved one is in such care and their human remains are interred in sacred ground. Death is of course a time of sadness, for we mourn the earthly loss of our loved ones. However, as a people of faith, we also know that death is a times of joy, for we cannot be fully reunited with God until we pass from this world. Our faith teaches us that in death, life is changed, not ended. The funeral Rites of the Church reinforce the message of God s love for us, a love that conquers all things destroying even death itself. Below are the regulations to follow: The ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place. The conservation of the ashes of the faithfully departed may not be kept at home. The cremated remains of the faithful must stay together and may not be divided among family members or scattered in nature. It is not permitted that the ashes of the faithful be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or in any other objects. We believe that the body is a gift from God, a temple where the Holy Spirit dwells. To be consistent with our faith and beliefs the body of the faithfully departed should be treated with dignity and respect that can only come from a proper burial. All of this helpful information can be found on the Archdiocese of Chicago s website. http://www.catholiccemeterieschicago.org/catholic_funerals/cremation_services Please join us Please join us this weekend after all Masses in the Coffee Room of the church to wish Seminarian Michael Barbarossa farewell and good luck in his pastoral internship. Michael will be at his home Diocese in Seattle completing his pastoral internship there and will not be returning to St. Peter Damian until the fall. We will have some sweet treats and beverages available for all to share in fellowship. Did you know? There are two sacraments of healing. 1. Reconciliation (penance, confession) is the sacrament in which sins committed after baptism are confessed after an examination of conscience and forgiven by a priest in the name of Christ. This is a verbal confession of sins. 2. Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament in which those who are ill are anointed to impart spiritual strength and physical healing. Anointed with oil. Both of these sacraments are offered in our church. Reconciliation is available on every Saturday at 4:00 pm in the Church and on the First Saturday at 8:00 am in the Chapel. Anointing of the sick can be scheduled by calling the parish office at 630-837-5411 during business hours or by dialing the same number and select option # 5 after hours. Join a ministry and know the joy of serving Christ. 5
