Welcome We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. Attendance Please let us know of your attendance this morning by completing the pew pad. Newcomer Orientation We invite you to learn about the life of our church, ways you can get involved, and how to become a member by attending Newcomer Orientation, which is held the second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. Sunday School We offer Sunday school for children age 2 through adult each Sunday from 9:45 10:45 a.m. Children At Athens First United Methodist Church, we invite families to worship together. Children s Church is held for children in kindergarten through grade 2 most Sundays during the 11:00 a.m. service. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who greatly delight in God s commandments! Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their house, and their righteousness endures forever. They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice. For the righteous shall never be moved; they will be remembered forever. *THE HYMN OF PRAISE umh 206 I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light HOUSTON *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles' Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. services Response to the Word THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION When we gather to praise God and celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion, we remember that we are people who have preferred our wills to the will of God. Accepting God s power to become new persons in Christ, let us confess our sin before God and one another. Almighty and merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you and one another in both our actions and our inactions. We recognize that in Jesus Christ our light has come, yet often we choose to walk in shadows and ignore the light. Gracious God, forgive our sins and remove from us the veil of darkness that shrouds our lives. Illumined by your Word and sacrament, may we rise to the radiance of Christ s glory. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. Before the mountains were brought forth, or you had formed the earth, from everlasting to everlasting, you alone are God. You created light out of darkness and brought forth life on the earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your prophets. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. 6

9:45 & 11:00 a.m. services Song Lyrics Take this bread, take this cup, take this time and remember, remember God s love for each of us. Hope is shared, grace is poured; at this table Christ is made known to us; mercy is shown to us; He gave his life that we might live. This is the feast of grace for God s people. Let all receive these gifts from above. And remember this table can teach us God s promise that love never fails; love never fails; God s promise sustains us. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. He has revealed your secret and hidden wisdom, decreed before the ages to those who had ears to hear. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection, you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." On the day you raised him from the dead he was recognized by his disciples in the breaking of the bread, and in the power of your Holy Spirit your Church has continued in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. The Music During Communion 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. Sonata da chiesa, Op. 1, No. 7 Grave and Allegro Corelli Miles Adams, Josh Luke, Matthew Everhart, saxophone 11:00 a.m. God s Promise Mark Patterson Sung by the Lyric and Celebrate Choirs; Cathy Felton and Sylvia Arant, accompanists; Lindsey Parrish, youth helper The Receiving of the Elements of Communion At Athens First United Methodist, all are invited to commune at Christ s table. 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. services THE PRAYER AFTER RECEIVING THE ELEMENTS Generous God, you have given yourself to us and made us yours. You prepared a table before us, led us to it, and fed us abundantly. Thank you for your life-giving gifts. Thank you for uniting us with you and with each other, for giving us new life and new hope, and for preparing us to live as your people. May our lives joyfully display our hope in you. In the power of your Holy Spirit we pray. Amen.
