Scott of The New York Times wrote: "Even if you think you know what's coming, Selma hums with suspense and surprise. Packed with incident and overflowing with fascinating characters, it is a triumph of efficient, emphatic cinematic storytelling. Ruby Bridges is a Disney film of the true story of the six year-old African American girl who alone desegregated the William Franz Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960. Norman Rockwell s famous painting, The Problem We All Live With, shows Ruby Bridges being escorted by four deputy marshals with a vandalized wall behind them. On July 15, 2011, Bridges met with President Barack Obama at the White House, and while viewing the Norman Rockwell painting of her on display the president told her, "I think it's fair to say that if it hadn't been for you guys, I might not be here and we wouldn't be looking at this together. See painting at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/the_problem_we_all_live_with Donations for items needed for kits on MLK Day service project are welcome. Presbytery Pastoral Care Network (PPCN) is a 501(c)3 non-profit providing professional development, support, and resources for those caring for ministers throughout the Presbyterian Church (USA). January 2019 Developing and Measuring Spiritual Health The Case for Spiritual Development by Rev. Paul Burns I wonder if we, Presbyterians, are so adamant that the world recognize we are saved by the grace of God alone, that perhaps we are afraid to even hint we might need to put forth effort as followers of Christ. No! We are not saved by our works!! I think we all get that. But a work begins when the grace so freely given is so freely received in our hearts, and it is an arduous work. No, it is not our work alone. It is the work of the Holy Spirit, the Church, and our own effort and willingness. It is - dare I say - a cooperative effort. It is an undertaking that leads us deeper into the life of Christ and further toward the way of Christ. It is the work of cultivation of souls; ourselves and others. We are all in this together. We can t make the fruit of the Holy Spirit spring forth from our souls, but I do believe we participate with the Spirit in making ourselves ready for what God seeks to do in us. Prepare ye the way of the Lord! This is discipleship. It s the primary work of the Church and every church. Much of the Church world has focused on leading people to Christ, but it seems to me that the Church has struggled to lead people into Christ-likeness. MORE ===========
