January 20, 2018 ST. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Page 3 A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. ARE YOU SEEKING SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE OR DIRECTION? Within each of us lies the desire to find meaning beyond the moment to discover our true selves to grow closer to God. Spiritual direction is a graced way to explore that deeper connection with God by reflecting deeply on your everyday experiences in the light of Scripture and prayer. This ministry is not about problem-solving or therapy, and not about being directed. Rather, it is a shared journey of encouragement to grow in relationship with God, self, others and creation. BEREAVEMENT GROUP The Parish of St Rose of Lima sponsors the bereavement support group on Thursdays, in the parish office work room from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. ABCD 2019 Archbishop s Charities & Development Drive Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Follow Him and change your life. The message of Jesus is clear. When He says those words, change your life, He is asking you to make a profound change in your whole life. To do that, first, we must listen to the Gospel and learn who Jesus is. And only once we begin to know Him, can we choose to follow Him and to help Him help others. That s what it means to be a disciple. There are many aspects of His life that help us to understand how we must change to be more like Jesus. He calls us to lift up the poor, to cherish and love them; to fight injustices; to spread the Good News; and to share all the goods of God s creation so that they are not kept only by a few. And while we cannot change our life in one day, we can take the steps to follow Him every day to become better disciples. I write to you today to suggest one meaningful way for us to follow Jesus by making a gift of hope through the Archbishop s Charity and Development Drive (ABCD). The ABCD, which supports our community through life-changing programs and ministries, is a way for us to put our faith into action. Every gift opens the door to a better tomorrow, a better life, and a more hopeful future. Hope has a name: Jesus. To put our faith in Jesus means we must put it into action through charity. Our archdiocesan programs and ministries effect change, share the love of Christ, and bring hope to people in need. In the words of Pope Benedict, A world without God is a world without hope. A world without God is a world without a future. Please join me in answering His call by making a gift of hope today through the ABCD. Individually, we can change our own life, but together, we can change the world. United, let us be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. How do we perceive our God-given spiritual gifts, and how do we share them with others?
