Good Morning! Join us as we submit to Living for God-Sized Results in 2019! January 19-28 Daniel Fast Overview The Daniel Fast is a spiritual discipline designed to better connect us with God. We will take 10 days, to deepen our relationship with God and center ourselves on what God is going to do in our church and in our lives during this series. We are praying that hundreds of people will come to faith in Christ. The Daniel Fast is a partial fast, which means that we will eliminate some common things from our daily diet, but will have generous options available. We will focus on eating fruits and vegetables that are pure and simple. We have included the four food groups below. Remember this is simply plant based nutrition. *If you have any known medical conditions or suspect such conditions, consult your doctor before beginning the fast. THE FOUR FOOD GROUPS: 1. The Whole Grain Group: This group includes brown rice, oats, barley, millet, and products made from whole grain. Grains are filling with little fat and no cholesterol. 2. The Legume Group: This category includes peas, beans and lentils. Legumes are hearty, high protein foods with a low glycemic index. They are rich in calcium, iron, and cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber. These will drive down your weight, blood sugar and cholesterol. 3. The Vegetable group: The green vegetables--asparagus, broccoli, spinach, kale, collards, and many others are packed with iron and except for spinach, high in absorbable calcium. Orange - colored vegetables are loaded with beta-carotene, a cancer fighter. For example, carrots and yams. These foods are loaded with vitamins and minerals, and are very low in fats, and like all plants foods, they have no cholesterol and have a low glycemic index, except baking potatoes. 4. The Fruit Group: Fruits are loaded with vitamins and they have no fats or cholesterol. Nearly all fruits: apples, bananas, blue berries, cherries, oranges, peaches and most others have a low glycemic index. The exceptions are watermelon and pineapple. Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke? Isaiah 58:6 (NASB) 3

What Are You Willing to Die For? Acts 6:8-7:60; cf. Matt. 16:18 Pastor Brian Kennedy, Sr. TEXT QUESTIONS TO PASTOR AS HE IS PREACHING TO: (909) 638-2696 Take It Home Point: Be willing to die for something that cannot be stopped. With powerful forces opposing Stephen as he served in the church, he became the first Christian martyr. His death was not in vain because The Church cannot be stopped (Matt. 16:18). A. Stephen s Ministry Reflected God Blessing Healthy Change in Church Growth (v. 8). 1. Stephen was picked to help oversee the widow s ministry (Acts 6:8; cf. 6:3, 6). 2. As Stephen served with grace and power, God s blessing was evident (Acts 6:8). B. Stephen was not Shaken when Church Ministry Got Tough (Acts 6:9-15). 1. Freed Jewish slaves, stuck in religion, challenged the healthy change in the church (v. 9; cf. Acts 6:1-7). When God blesses change, watch out for the church growth killers. 2. When God blesses change, no one can overpower the Holy Spirit s work (v. 10). 3. The Freed Jewish slaves proved they were still in bondage (vs. 11-15). a. They plotted a public defamation of Stephen s upright character (vs. 11-14). b. The Jewish leaders joined them initially for an intimidation campaign (v. 15). 4. Instead of cowering down, Stephen stood as God s man, full of the Spirit (v. 15). C. Stephen, Boldly Summarized Israel s History of Opposition toward God (7:1-53). 1. Stephen started Israel s history with Abraham (Acts 7:2-8). 2. Abraham s great grandson, Jacob, fathered the twelve tribes of Israel (v. 8). 3. Jacob s acts of favoritism caused the jealousy among his sons (v. 9; cf. Gen. 37:3-4). 4. God rescued Joseph from his jealous brothers (v. 10). 5. God turned what was meant for evil into good to preserve Israel (vs. 11-18). 6. Moses is introduced amid Egypt s cruel treatment of Israel (vs. 18-22). 7. Moses was called by God to lead Israel out of slavery (vs. 22-38). 8. Israel opposed Moses, and opposed and disrespected God (vs.39-50). 9. Stephen reminded the Jews of their practice of opposing the Holy Spirit (vs. 51-53). D. Stephen saw Jesus in the place of power to reassure him that The Church cannot be stopped despite the Jews opposition (vs. 54-60; cf. Matt. 16:18; 28:18-20). E. Stephen died displaying God s forgiveness, which distinguishes The Church from human based institutions (v. 60). Stephen could have denied Jesus and saved his life, but he died for something unstoppable. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., also died for something that cannot be stopped (the fight to end racial segregation, injustice, and poverty - Isaiah 2, 9, 11, 35, 42, & Revelation 21). Personal Question: What are you giving your life to, that you are willing to die for, and that cannot be stopped because it is incorporated into God s eternal kingdom plan? Personal Prayer: Lord, the life and cruel death of Stephen is a sobering event in the life of the church. Moreover, the ongoing persecution of Christians around the world also causes me to stop and ask, what am I giving my life to, and what am I willing to die for? Lord, You said I would be persecuted for my alignment with You. I deeply desire to represent You well as I serve You in meaningful ways. Lord, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well, with my soul. I live to love and serve You, In the name of Jesus I pray, amen. 8
