MEMO To: Deacon Community Office of the Diaconate 100 East Eighth Street Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 513-421-3131 Fax 513-421-6225 deaconoffice@ catholiccincinnati.org From: Deacon Dave Profitt Subject: Monthly Updates Date: August, 2014 To the Deacon Community: In July, I had the privilege to attend the NDICE Conference at Xavier University. First let me say that Deacons Jeff Hall and John Gerke did a wonderful job in putting on this event. There are a lot people behind the scenes doing great work as well. The speakers were excellent and meeting deacons from all over was a real treat. Please plan on attending next year. It is well worth it. While at NDICE, I had a chance to meet many of you for the first time. I enjoyed our time together and I appreciate your comments and suggestions. You always make me feel welcome and that is further evidence of the great group of deacons we have here in the Archdiocese. One of the things that came out of NDICE for me was finally pulling the trigger and getting Verbum Bible software by Logos. For a deacon, this program contains everything you can possibly want. There are great resources in the program for homilies, catechesis and Church history. It is a program I would highly recommend. I ve been working with Logos to get a group discount for our deacons. They ve agreed to it but I m still negotiating how much of a discount. Your Pastor may already have the program and if not, it could be something you can get through the Parish. Further information will be coming. The Archbishop has asked me to help reignite the Catholic Men s Conference which was so important in the spiritual development of many men in the Greater Cincinnati area and beyond. I m looking for some deacons to serve on the executive committee with me. Our duty will be to begin the process of working with the founding team of the Men s Conference to do what is necessary to get this vital ministry going again. If you have an interest in serving on the executive committee, please contact me by phone or email Sports Leaders is an innovative program that is designed to help coaches at Catholic schools provide spiritual leadership to their teams. This program is in need of deacon mentors for the coaches to help them in this all important task. It can be anything from spiritually adopting a coach and team all the way to meeting with the coach on a regular basis to provide that spiritual direction. I will be posting a list of teams where Sports Leaders is active and looking for men to step up for this important task. Again, if you are interested, you can call or email me here at the Archdiocese. I m looking for some ideas for deacon get togethers on a social basis. One thought was to attend a Red s game on a group basis. We can get discounted tickets to a game and it would be a great way to show Cincinnati and beyond the number of men serving in this ministry. That is evangelization with a fun twist. Let me know if you re interested. I ve had a number of wives express an interest in creating a wives group in the Archdiocese. I believe this is a wonderful idea but I need some women to take a leadership role in this group. If your wife has an interest, have her contact me to discuss further. Finally, I truly appreciate the support and encouragement that many of you have offered. Yes things are changing and will continue to change, some of it out my hands. Be patient because my purpose is to provide the deacon community with the best support I can. We are utilizing more technology for communications and will continue to do so. Look for changes to the website among others. I want it to be a place you go to get pertinent information for your ministry. I would also ask that you continue to pray for me in my efforts. 1

The dates and locations for these meetings are: Dayton Wednesday October, 2014 St. Helen, Dayton Smith Building Wednesday May 6, 2015 St. Helen, Dayton Smith Building Cincinnati Wednesday October 15, 2014 Ruah Woods Wednesday May 13, 2015 TBA SITE NEEDED North Tuesday October 21, 2014 Spiritual Center of Maria Stein Tuesday May 19, 2015 Spiritual Center of Maria Stein SUMMIT 2014 PROCLAIM: EQUIPPING DISCIPLES FOR A NEW MISSIONARY AGE An important event in the life of the Archdiocese will be happening October 6 th and 7 th at the Dayton Convention Center. ARCHDIOCESE OF CINCINNATI OFFICE OF THE DIACONATE 100 E. EIGHTH STREET CINCINNATI, OH 45202 The Way, the Truth, the Life I am the way, the truth and the life (Jn 14:6). The Lord sums up the substance of our faith in three words. First-century Christians took those words and made them their Way, foundation and model of their belief and practice (Acts 2:42): They keep giving incessant, constant attention to the teaching of the Apostles (the Creed), to caring for one another in Christ s love (koinonia), to the Breaking of Bread (Eucharist) and to the prayers (with emphasis on the Psalms). Today s parish continues the great tradition. We will break open those three words and apply them to our own lives and apostolates. Rev.
