January 25 th St. Gregory the Theologian (390 A.D.) St. Gregory was born in 329 A.D. in a tiny village in Asia Minor called Arianzus. His father was the Bishop of Nazianzus in Asia Minor for forty-six years. Gregory was sent to the best schools. While studying in Athens, Greece, he met and became close friends with St. Basil the Great. Gregory became a priest and assisted his father for several years. About the time that Arius' false teachings about Jesus were circulating, Gregory was asked to go to Constantinople and give some sermons about Jesus Christ. His sermons were so good; he came to be called Gregory the Theologian. In 379 A.D. Gregory was elected as the twenty-ninth Patriarch of Constantinople. He presided when the Church had the Second Ecumenical Council at Constantinople in 381 A.D. But Gregory did not remain as Patriarch too long, because he preferred to retire and write books, religious poems and Church hymns. St. Gregory died in 390 A.D. But he left a treasury of his writings in the form of booklets, sermons, letters and essays. He also wrote many of the hymns we use in our Church during the calendar year.

SAINT JOHN GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH STERLING HEIGHTS MICHIGAN What is Stewardship? Stewardship is the management of the gifts bestowed upon us by God. These gifts are time, talent and treasure. It is through these gifts we are brought closer together as a Church and as a community. What is a Steward? A steward is a member of our St. John community that volunteers their time, talent and treasure. How can I volunteer my time and talent? Our St. John community offers many ministries! To find out more and volunteer, contact the church office. How much treasure should I give? This is a personal decision. Every year we should look at our finances and determine how much we should give back to God. These funds are used for the daily usage of the church and for funding our ministries. TO BE A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING AT ST. JOHN, the suggested minimum Stewardship for an individual is $350 per year ( less than $1 per day) or for a family $700 per year (less than $1 per day for the husband and the wife) PLEASE USE YOUR CREDIT CARD OR YOUR WEEKLY OFFERING ENVELOPES St. John S 2019 BUDGEt is $410.000. Cross road Greetings in our Lord Jesus Christ! As the teens in our communities approach the beginning of young adult life, they are developing questions about themselves, their purpose in the world, and how it relates to their faith. The CrossRoad Summer Institute, now in its sixteenth year and offering three sessions, welcomes ninety-six high school juniors and seniors to participate in a ten-day Orthodox Christian program developed to help them wrestle with these difficult questions. The curriculum approaches these questions from an Orthodox Christian perspective and offers the space and resources for students to discover their natural gifts and talents in order to use them in service to their church and to society. The dates for the 2019 CrossRoad Summer Institute are June 15-25 (Session 1), July 2-12 (Session 2), and July 23-August 2 (Session 3). Sessions 1 and 2 will be held on the campus of Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline, MA, and Session 3 will be held at North Park University in Chicago, IL. Through the support of generous donors, each accepted 2019 applicant will receive a $1,650 scholarship and is only responsible for a $850 program fee and travel costs to and from Boston or Chicago. It is our CrossRoad policy that no accepted participant requesting tuition assistance will be turned away. The application process is needs blind ; the acceptance process is independent of student financial need. Participants home churches are encouraged to help with the fee and with travel costs and to have their student(s) offer a presentation after attending. For ten days participants will: Grow in their faith Explore their strengths Engage in serving others Discover how their gifts and talents can serve the needs of the Church and society In all of this, we re hoping to encourage them on their journey toward Christ, with the belief that if He is the cornerstone of their lives, whatever they choose to do will be built on a solid foundation. By using the wisdom of the Church as well as contemporary resources we hope to help them discern their life callings, matching their personal gifts with the needs of the world. The staff of CrossRoad believes that if the participants strive to live a life in and for Christ, almost any occupation, event or relationship can become a door to holiness. In selecting CrossRoad participants, our committee depends on recommendations of the applicants supplied by persons who know them well. We are eager to select those individuals whose interests indicate that they have the greatest potential to benefit from this program. Please provide a frank and thoughtful appraisal of the applicant. We greatly appreciate the time you devote to this evaluation. For more information, please see the CrossRoad website, www.crossroadinstitute.org, and feel free to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns at (617) 850-1310 or crossroad@hchc.edu. Sincerely, Kyra Limberakis, Director The CrossRoad Team
