St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church February 2014 REV. KEVIN K. ADER 715-423-7788 office@stjohnkellner.org pastor@stjohnkellner.org www.stjohnkellner.org Mission Statement: We are called by God to be the light of the world. We are to go forth and show Jesus love and forgiveness through loving care for all God s creation. Lenten Services Restored In Christ Ash Wednesday (10:30 am and 6:30 pm) and Midweek (10:30 am) Traditional Service The season of Lent is a time for us to face together the brokenness of our lives and our world, and then turn that brokenness over to Christ so that we can be restored by him through the cross. Written by seminary professor Joel Biermann, each service in this stirring series focuses on a certain event in the Lenten story and takes a good, hard look at a broken element from that particular story. Coming to an understanding of how each of these broken elements leads to restoration in Christ is key to understanding what it ultimately means to live today as new creations in Christ. Ash Wednesday Broken Hearts Restored Joel 2:12-14 Our hearts are broken in sorrow over sin; Christ restores our hearts through his forgiveness. Week 1 Broken Vessel Restored Mark 14:1-9 A broken vessel holds costly perfume; we are broken vessels restored when Christ pays the price for us on the cross. Week 2 Broken Trust Restored Matthew 26:14-25 Judas breaks his trust with Jesus by betraying him; our broken trust is restored through the sacrifice of Christ. Week 3 Broken Bread Restored John 6:48-58 Bread is broken at the Last Supper; we are restored through the Bread of Life, Jesus. Week 4 Broken Promises Restored Matthew 26:69-75 Peter s broken promises to never deny Jesus are restored by the surpassing love of Christ. Week 5 Broken Justice Restored 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 A broken justice system put Jesus on the cross; we are restored when by his death we are declared not guilty. Holy Moses Midweek (6:30 pm) Informal Family Service Holy Moses is a joyful series that enlivens the spirit of children and adults alike as they relive and retell the greatest Salvation Event in the Old Testament the Exodus of the Hebrew people from slavery. Through song, sermon, drama, and a Moses actor, the Exodus experience is remembered and applied to the lives of modern Christians. Monday Evening Bible Class Monday Evening Bible Class will be finishing up its study of The Lost Books, then we will be studying How We Got the Bible, featuring Dr. Paul L. Maier. In March we will start a study entitled Restored in Christ which will take us through the Lenten season. We meet on Monday evenings, 6:30 8:00 pm. Watch for further details in the weekly bulletin. Cans For Kids The Board of Ed is collecting Cans for Kids. If you would like to help support the efforts to provide funds to the Grant School milk program please bring your aluminum cans to the bin located by the church's storage shed. Page 1

Just a friendly reminder to all that participated in Journey To The Cross last year. You will remember that we as a group decided that if you had a part in it such as Character, Tour Guide, Custom Official, that you would make your intent known by Ash Wednesday by signing up once again in the back of church. If you are a new comer and are eager there will be a sheet for you stated New Comers, if interested please make your intent known that you want to participatewhat becomes available will be your choices. ~The Holy Spirit seems to Guide us through because it always works out ~ As we all know not everyone returns from the year before but this gives the chance to all those who participated last year to have their same parts first. This year s event will be Saturday April 12, 2014 11:00am - 2:00pm - Rain or Shine Page 5
