January 27, 2019 Third day in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS Neh 8: 2-4A, 5-6, 8-10; Ps 19: 8-10, 15; 1 Cor 12:12-30 or 1 Cor 12:12-14, 27; Lk 1: 1-4; 4: 14-21 In St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians, it states If they were all one part, where would the body be? But as it is there are many parts, yet one body (1 COR 12:18-20). What does this teach us as Christian stewards? It shows us that we all have equal dignity and worth in God s sight, and that if God sees us as equally precious, we should view each other in this same light. It teaches us to humbly recognize our own gifts as well as the giftedness of every member of our parish family. And, while God designed us to be ultimately dependent on Him, it seems He has also designed us to need each other! This is part of the beauty and richness of a stewardship way of life. No one person can do it all in life whether in family life or parish life. But God does not ask us to do it all. He simply asks us to share the gifts and talents we do have in the season of life we find ourselves right now. FLU SEASON For the health and safety of our community during this flue season, Fr. Kirk has decided to refrain from distributing the Precious Blood to the assembly. We will resume after the worst of the flu season. Also, during Sign of Peace, please respect those who do not wish to shake hands. Please offer a slight head bow. A hand sanitizer station has been set up in the Narthex. MARIAN HOUSE VOLUNTEER We are looking for an individual to lead the monthly Marian House volunteer effort for St. Gabriel. This is great opportunity to get involved in our parish as well as the local community, serving those in need of a nutritious, warm meal. The position involves sending out a monthly bulletin announcement requesting volunteers, passing along the names to the staff at the Marian House and of course, volunteering your time when possible. If interested, please contact Cyndy Pylkka at 719-964-6575 or ccsp@comcast.net. SECOND ANNUAL OUTREACH COMMITTEE SOCKS AND T-SHIRT COLLECTION FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN January 12-February 10 2019 Please donate new white socks and new and gently used t- shirts for the Marian House to help those in need in our community. Questions: Please contact Barbara Green barbaragreen241@hotmail.com. SCAM ALERT It has come to our attention that there are several email and mail scams going around to our church community. Recently several parishioners have received an email from Fr. Kirk requesting assistance in some way (either by money, I Tunes cards etc). These are scams and we are urging you to delete the email immediately and do not respond to it or open any links in the message. Please be aware that Fr. Kirk will NEVER contact you via email asking for assistance. If you should receive an email from any staff member of St. Gabriel, please make sure to check the ENTIRE email address. We will ALWAYS use the saintgabriel.net email address and it will have our church logo at the end of the message. An additional way to determine if the email is from Fr. Kirk is that he will sign +JMJ+ after his name. Checking email addresses and NOT responding to pleas is a good practice to exercise when reading emails from any source. If you should have any questions, please call the office at 719-528- 8407. FAIR TRADE COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE Fair Trade coffee and chocolate will be available next weekend, Feb 2-3. In addition to receiving a quality product, you can make a positive difference in the world by helping impoverished coffee growers earn fair wages for their labor. ALTAR FLOWERS Do you know that the beautiful flowers you see in church every week are all donation based. You can sign up and dedicate flowers in honor of or in memory of loved ones. The sign up book is at the welcome desk. Flowers will be displayed starting Friday before the weekend of your choice and remain in front of the altar for a week. Flower dedications will also be highlighted in the bulletin. The minimum donation for the flowers has been reduced from $50 to $35. If there is not a request for flowers by the Monday before the weekend at 10am,, there will be not be flowers in front of the altar. St. Gabriel the Archangel 2 Colorado Springs, CO

For many living in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers make it difficult for people to practice the faith. Your donations fund catechesis, marriage and family life programs, and seminarian and religious formation so people can grow closer to Christ. Please prayerfully consider supporting this collection to share your faith with our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean. Thank you! INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY Snow season is here! MISSION TRIP APPEAL Hello, I am Rebekah Acosta and I have exciting news! For the past several years, I have been a parishioner at St. Gabriel s. Now, I am currently attending Regis University in Denver, Colorado. As you may know, my older brother Benjamin Acosta is a FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionary, and I have been given the wonderful opportunity of going on a mission trip with him. I, and many other college students, FOCUS missionaries, and priests are going to Rome on a pilgrimage to serve the Lord and help those in need. We will be serving alongside the Missionaries of Charity, with intentions to serve the poorest of the poor. Through this mission trip I hope to grow closer to God and share in His love as I serve His people. You can join me on this mission trip in a couple of ways- with your prayers and with a financial gift. I need to raise $2,750 by 9 February. To meet this goal as quickly as possible, gifts of $50, $100, or $150+ are greatly needed. There are no minimums or maximums and all gifts are immensely appreciated! If you would like to join my mission support team, simply go online and donate by credit card or bank transfer at http://www.focusonline.org/goto/rebekahacosta. Gifts made online and checks made payable to FOCUS are tax-deductible, charitable gifts. Thank you for your prayerful time and consideration! For more information, please call me at 719-229-1213, or email me at rebekahacosta77@gmail.com. St. Gabriel the Archangel 6 Colorado Springs, CO

ST. JOHN BOSCO FEAST DAY JANUARY 31 John Bosco, also known as Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco and Don Bosco, was born in Becchi, Italy, on August 16, 1815. His birth came just after the end of the Napoleonic Wars which ravaged the area. At the age of two, John lost his father, leaving him and his two older brothers to be raised by his mother, Margherita. His "Mama Margherita Occhiena" would herself be declared venerable by the Church in 2006. When John was nine years old, he had the first of several vivid dreams that would influence his life. In his dream, he encountered a multitude of boys who swore as they played. Among these boys, he encountered a great, majestic man and woman. The man told him that in meekness and charity, he would "conquer these your friends." Then a lady, also majestic said, "Be strong, humble and robust. When the time comes, you will understand everything." This dream influenced John the rest of his life. In 1835, John entered the seminary and following six years of study and preparation, he was ordained a priest in 1841.When he was not preaching, Fr. Bosco worked tirelessly seeking work for boys who needed it, and searching for lodgings for others. His mother began to help him, and she became known as "Mamma Margherita." By the 1860s, Fr. Bosco and his mother were responsible for lodging 800 boys. In 1859, Fr. Bosco established the Society of St. Francis de Sales. He organized 15 seminarians and one teenage boy into the group. Their purpose was to carry on his charitable work, helping boys with their faith formation and to stay out of trouble. The organization still exists today and continues to help people, especially children around the world. Fr. Bosco died on January 31, 1888. The call for his canonization was immediate. Pope Pius XI knew Fr. Bosco personally and agreed, declaring him blessed in 1929. St. John Bosco was canonized on Easter day, 1934 and he was given the title, "Father and Teacher of Youth.
