C R O W N O F L I F E L U T H E R A N C H U R C H P A S T O R K E I T H H. L E M L E Y February 2016 Issue 2 Crown Newsletter Midweek Lenten Worship, Wednesdays at Crown of Life We have added afternoon midweek Lenten worship! We will offer 2 worship services each Wednesday of Lent, beginning Ash Wednesday, February 10. The Wednesday worship times are 12:15 PM and 7:00 PM. The afternoon services are added so that those who do not like to drive after dark, and parents, grandparents and all who pick up children from our preschool, may attend. Children are encouraged to attend the afternoon service! A light lunch will be offered immediately following the service. The evening worship service begins with a soup supper at 6:00 PM and worship at 7:00 PM. The scenes of Lent are familiar. The Upper Room, the Garden of Gethsemane, the halls of Pontius Pilate, and the hill of Golgotha these are the places we remember when we meditate on our Lord s Passion. Yet when Jesus enters a place, He never leaves it as He found it. The most troubling places in our lives become the most amazing places of God s grace when Jesus visits them. For this reason, in our midweek Lenten series, we will read and contemplate Luke s account of our Lord s Passion. Each week, we will read a different section of the story; and each week, Luke will take us to a different place, the places of the Passion. Our focus, however, will not be on these physical places. Instead, we will gaze in wonder on the spiritual work that our Lord does there. Jesus will share His strength in our times of weakness. He will fill us with His praise in the midst of our sorrow. Week after week, we will enter the places of the Passion only to discover our Lord waiting for us, willing to share with us a love that was set in place before the foundations of the world. Plan to come to our Lenten services this year. Prepare to enter into these places of devotion, for there, your Lord will meet you, sharing with you His wondrous love that saves a fallen world.

Issue 2 CROWN NEWSLETTER Page 2 Crown s Woman of the Year Congratulations to Charlotte Bachelard who is a very active lady in service to her church. Lottie has served in a variety of areas over the years she has been a member here at Crown. Many of those in the area of worship, being a choir member, a lay reader and serving on altar guild. These are only a few examples of the way that Lottie uses her time and talents in service at Crown of Life. You are invited to the annual luncheon of the Council of Lutheran Women who honor the Woman of the Year. This year the luncheon is on Tuesday, March 15 at The Wyndham Garden (formerly the Sterling Inn), 34911 Van Dyke Road, Sterling Heights. The program begins at 11:15 a.m. and this year s speaker is Rev. Dr. Patrick Ferry, President of Concordia University Wisconsin and Concordia University Ann Arbor. Youth Group Sunday School Update The Youth have been enjoying the Drive Thru History- The Holy Land video series. Each week has been a fun, interesting lesson and they have learned many new things. We have two lessons left in that series. Next, we have decided we would like to watch videos on the history of the Bible. We will start these lessons in February. The Youth Sunday school group meets in the youth lounge each week during the Sunday school hour. Anyone who has finished Confirmation is welcome to join our class anytime. Calling All Men Men of Crown: Join us on Friday, Feb. 12th at 7:00 AM (yes, morning) to share concerns, opinions, encouragement, and fellowship. We will gather in the social hall and discuss time and locations for future gatherings. If interested but unavailable, call Dale or Fred. The Greatest Gift You Can Give Many of our older and disabled neighbors are quite isolated with no family or friends nearby. A special friend who can drop by every week or two to chat, read mail, go out for coffee, or just let them know that someone cares, becomes a wonderful blessing in their lives. If you have just a few hours each month that you can give to someone who has no one, you can make a real difference in the life of a frail or homebound neighbor. Your gift of time may turn into a very special blessing for you as well! For more information, call the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers at 586-757-5551.

Issue 2 Page 3 CROWN NEWSLETTER Crown Jewels Planning Potluck Crown Jewels Update: January saw us starting the year out at the Palazzo de Bocce. It has taken us four years but I think we are finally improving! At least we are now able to get the pallino across the center lines in the court. I think there was only twice we had to nudge it across with our foot. We might not always follow the rules exactly but we always have a lot of fun playing! January is also the month for our planning potluck where we plan events for the first six months of the year. Check the Sneak Peak Events listed on the Crown Jewels Board in the narthex to get an idea of what is coming up. More details will appear in the bulletins and newsletters as they become available each month. There are several copies of this on the counter if you would like one. Crown Jewels February Event: February s Event is to The Painted Pot. This is a chance to get in touch with your creative side or, if you are like me, you can use the stencils they will provide to make a piece of pottery. They have all sorts of items: vases, mugs, plates, figurines, spoon rests, and the list goes on! We have the main level reserved for our group on Friday, February 19 th at 10 a.m. The studio fee is $3.50 an hour and includes instruction and glazes and then you also need to pay for the cost of your pottery which ranges from $10-$25. We will meet at The Painted Pot at 10 a.m. which is located at 421 Walnut Blvd. in downtown Rochester. They offer personalizing services for a couple dollars extra if you would like them to put names on any pieces or you can always do it yourself. Of course, following our pottery making we will have lunch somewhere downtown. Hope to see you there! Sign up in the narthex on the Crown Jewels Board. Winter activities are in full-swing in the Preschool. We enjoyed a field trip to GTC Gymnastics on January 22 nd, and we are practicing the songs we will sing at the worship service on February 14 th. Hope to see all of you there! Enrollment for the 2016-17 school year has also begun. Please spread the word about our wonderful programs. For information, or to schedule a tour, call 248-652-7720, or email

Eagle Scout Award Presentation to Max Gugel - On December13th, Scout Max Gugel was presented with Boy Scouts of America s highest rank, the Eagle Scout Award at a ceremony at crown of Life attended by fellow scouts family and friends. Some quick facts about the Eagle Scout award Only 4% of all Scouts meet the requirements necessary to earn the Eagle Scout award, and of the 310 astronauts, 40 are eagle scouts and 180 were former scouts. For Max s Eagle scout project, he designed and constructed an outdoor worship center on the north hill facing the Crown of Life sanctuary. Jim Leinhos served as Max s Eagle project advisor. A plaque commemorating Max s project and achievement has been placed in the sanctuary narthex. Congratulation to Max on his achievement. We can t thank Max enough for this beautiful enhancement to our facilities that will be a reminder of one Scout s hard work and dedication for many years to come! Gil Bachelard made and hung these isle candles holders. We have some talented people in our congregation. Thank you Gil! Crown Woodworkers Joe Bieniek made the light cover boxes. Thank you for the light boxes, they make a beautiful addition to our Altar.
