Saint Charles Borromeo Week of Christian Unity No army can win a battle against itself. The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. There must be unity! This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray,a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week during the week to pray for Christian unity, we are not for focusing on the well-worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal, salvation for all! 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Month of the Holy Name of Jesus January 20,2019 This week, as we hear about the wedding feast at Cana from the Gospel of John and we do well to listen to the words Fr Robert Barron gives us about this passage. We begin Ordinary Time with the wedding at Cana, a rich, spiritual story with great implications for the Church. Both weddings and wine are consistently used symbols in scripture, and each is utilized to a powerful degree to explain the Incarnation, grace, the Sacraments, and the fulfillment of God's love for us. The wedding at Cana is how God shows us that He wants to marry His people, to share His life fully with them. This God becomes flesh in Jesus. A Holy Hour will be held on Monday January 21 @ 6:30pm at St Anthony church 851 Main St Woburn. All are welcome! Come and spend time with God. Lenten Mission collaborated among the 3 parishes of Woburn March 31, April 1, and April 2. Save the dates! Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is January 18-25, 2019. The theme of this year's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is "Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue." ( Deut 16:18-20). The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years in which Christians around the world have taken part in an octave of prayer for visible Christian unity and they move toward the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper "that they all may be one." (cf. John 17:21) On Sunday January 27, 2019 @4:00pm St Barbara church in Woburn will host a service for Christian unity. All are most welcome!
