Lent: From the cloud came a voice... W e are still at the beginning of Lent this is a special time in the liturgy of the Church. In the words of Pope Francis, it is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community, and every believer. Above all, Pope Francis says, it is a time of grace. It is, indeed, a time for a change of heart that is shown in our daily lives to the words to prayer, penance, and works of mercy. During the first part of Lent, the focus is on ourselves to see where we stand in our relationship with God. Last Sunday, we reflected on Jesus temptation in the desert and the temptations that each of us face in our lives. This weekend, the second Sunday of Lent, we hear the Gospel story of the Transfiguration. Our Christian life is a journey of conversion, of transfiguration. God, the Father, gave us another important piece of advice to listen to His Beloved Son: Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, This is my beloved son. Listen to him. In Our Lord, Jesus Christ, God speaks to all men, and through the Church, His voice resounds in all ages. As St. John Paul clearly wrote: The Church does not cease to listen to His words. She rereads them continually... the life of Christ speaks to all... it is His life that speaks, His humanity, His fidelity to the truth, His all-embracing love, and His suffering and death on the cross.... The Church lives His mystery, draws unwearyingly from it and continually seeks ways of bringing this mystery of her Master and Lord to the entire humanity. St. John Paul II, Redemptor Hominis, 7 We are called to a holy life, faithfully following the footsteps of Christ, and identifying ourselves with Him during our earthly life. Let us then, with Christ, not be afraid to embrace and love the Cross and all it entails pain, suffering, sacrifice, and difficulties so as with Him, we will arrive at the transfigured glory of the Resurrection, which He promised to us. This second week of Lent invites us to take time to listen to Him. Fr. Jose Thomas

The Deschutes County Fair is the first weekend in August and, for the past seven years, we have chaired the Pro-Life Booth at the Fair. Those who visit the booth, and those who generously work the booth, have always received positive feedback from fairgoers some of whom even make a point of stopping by to make sure that we are still in business there. A woman stopped by one year who said that she had changed her mind about aborting her son because of our booth! She brought the baby by to show him to us, and everyone cried tears of joy! But we are retiring and will not do it again this year. Hopefully, someone from St. Francis Parish will feel the need to continue to educate the public about fetal development and the tragedy of abortion. We have all of the necessary supplies and equipment in the basement of St. Thomas and also enough money in the treasury to fund one more year at the Fair $500. The time to reserve the fair booth is NOW... because it must be reserved by the end of FEBRUARY! But we need a coordinator! We are available to advise whoever steps forward. This has been a very rewarding and necessary Catholic action ministry, and we would like to see it continued! Please call Richard and Susan Thorne at (541) 548-9970 for more information.
ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE 5 St. Francis Skiing Lenten Fish-Fry Fridays Mark your calendars to attend the Fish-Fry Friday Nights during Lent in the parish community center. The Knights of Columbus will continue to prepare fish-fry dinners on Friday, March 2nd, and Friday, March 16th, starting at 5 p.m. and closing at 6:45 p.m. The dinner times will allow attendance at the Stations of the Cross. The cost is $10 a plate or $30 per family, and a 50/50 Raffle will be drawn at 6:30 p.m. each night. Come help the Knights of Columbus help our parish and community. Tickets are available at the door. Join Us to Pray for Vocations Latin Mass The next sung Mass, celebrated by Fr. Szymakowski, is at the Historic Church on Sunday, March 11th, at 1 p.m. Confessions will be heard on a case by case basis. To make an appointment, please call (541) 388-4004. Come skiing with Fr. Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest (Lk. 10:2). Come follow me, I call you by name. A Parish Lenten Mission, presented by Fr. Greg Schmitt, a Redemptorist priest, begins on Sunday, March 11th, through Wednesday, March 14th, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the 27th Street Church. Each evening will be followed by a social hour and refreshments. Child care will also be available.
