Lifelines MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF MALTA/NW MALTA UNITED METHODIST CHURCHES June 2015 The Pastors Message Last May 24 we celebrated the day of Pentecost in the Christian calendar. Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and several of Jesus faithful followers, also known as the birthday of the Christian Church. Pentecost to the Jewish community is a religious holiday called Shavuot. It celebrates the giving of the Laws of Moses in Sinai, so there is no excuse for not living the holiness of life, for now we can go by the book. It also caps the religious observance of the Passover that begins with the Seder Feast and eating of the unleavened bread. The word Pentecost derives from the 50 days between Easter to the descent of the Holy Spirit, ten days after Jesus Ascension into heaven. The power of the Holy Spirit touched everyone in the Upper Room during that day of Pentecost. People of faith from all backgrounds, various languages and different nationalities experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit in a personal and powerful, life transforming event. As a church and as Christians, we can also have our own Pentecost moments. We can experience the Holy Spirit s presence and power in our worship life as a church, in the celebration of the Sacraments, during our prayer time, in our Bible Study, mission outreach, service work in the community, in whatever ministry activity that helps us to have an open heart and mind to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also present during our times of personal struggles and challenges that life may take us. God sends us the Holy Spirit in such moments to comfort us but also to give us courage, faith, and power to deal with our suffering and grief and then move on. The Holy Spirit helps us to experience God s presence and gives us the power to be faithful followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is God s way of staying in touch daily with his people as they share the good news of Jesus Christ in word and deed. Let us continue to join in prayer that as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, to have an open heart and open minds to the presence and powerful movement of the Holy Spirit amongst us and amongst our constituents. Thus fulfilling the great commission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of this world. TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR GREAT THINGS GOD HAS DONE! +Pastor Noah Rev. Dr. Noah R.
