St. Joseph SUNDAY MISSAL PRAYERBOOK AND HYMNAL For 2018-2019 THE COMPLETE MASSES FOR SUNDAYS, HOLYDAYS, and the SACRED PASCHAL TRIDUUM With the People s Parts of Holy Mass Printed in Boldface Type and Arranged for Parish Participation IN ACCORD WITH THE THIRD TYPICAL EDITION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL With the NEW AMERICAN BIBLE Text From the revised Sunday Lectionary, short helpful notes and explanations, and a treasury of popular prayers Dedicated to St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church CATHOLIC BOOK PUBLISHING CORP. New Jersey

THE ORDER OF MASS Options are indicated by A, B, C, D in the margin. THE INTRODUCTORY RITES Acts of prayer and penitence prepare us to meet Christ as he comes in Word and Sacrament. We gather as a worshiping community to celebrate our unity with him and with one another in faith. 1 ENTRANCE CHANT STAND If it is not sung, it is recited by all or some of the people. Joined together as Christ s people, we open the celebration by raising our voices in praise of God who is present among us. This song should deepen our unity as it introduces the Mass we celebrate today.. Turn to Today s Mass 2 GREETING (3 forms) When the Priest comes to the altar, he makes the customary reverence with the ministers and kisses the altar. Then, with the ministers, he goes to his chair. After the Entrance Chant, all make the Sign of the Cross: Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. 10

Stop judging and you will not be judged. FEBRUARY 24 7th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ENTRANCE ANT. Ps 13 (12):6 [God s Merciful Love] O Lord, I trust in your merciful love. My heart will rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord who has been bountiful with me.. No. 2, p. 10 COLLECT [Word and Deed] Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, always pondering spiritual things, we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. r Amen., FIRST READING 1 Sm 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23 [David Spares Saul] King Saul has condemned David and is trying to capture him. David has the opportunity to kill Saul, but 206

207 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time FEB. 24 refuses to harm the king because Saul is anointed by the LORD. A reading from the first Book of Samuel IN those days, Saul went down to the desert of Ziph with three thousand picked men of Israel, to search for David in the desert of Ziph. So David and Abishai went among Saul s soldiers by night and found Saul lying asleep within the barricade, with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and Abner and his men sleeping around him. Abishai whispered to David: God has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day. Let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I will not need a second thrust! But David said to Abishai, Do not harm him, for who can lay hands on the LORD s anointed and remain unpunished? So David took the spear and the water jug from their place at Saul s head, and they got away without anyone s seeing or knowing or awakening. All remained asleep, because the LORD had put them into a deep slumber. Going across to an opposite slope, David stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from Abner, son of Ner, and the troops. He said: Here is the king s spear. Let an attendant come over to get it. The LORD will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness. Today, though the LORD delivered you into my grasp, I would not harm the LORD s anointed. The word of the Lord. r Thanks be to God., RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 103 [The Lord s Mercy] r The Lord is kind and mer - ci - ful.

FEB. 24 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time 208 Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. r The Lord is kind and merciful. He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills. He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion. r The Lord is kind and merciful. Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. Not according to our sins does he deal with us, nor does he requite us according to our crimes. r The Lord is kind and merciful. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. r The Lord is kind and merciful., SECOND READING 1 Cor 15:45-49 [Grace Builds on Nature] Grace builds on nature. In Christ we are formed in the spiritual order. A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians BROTHERS and sisters: It is written, The first man, Adam, became a living being, the last Adam a lifegiving spirit. But the spiritual was not first; rather the natural and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, earthly; the second man, from heaven. As was the earthly one, so also are the earthly, and as is the heavenly one, so also are the heavenly. Just as we

209 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time FEB. 24 have borne the image of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one. The word of the Lord. r Thanks be to God., ALLELUIA Jn 13:34 [Christ s Commandment] r Alleluia, alleluia. I give you a new commandment, says the Lord: love one another as I have loved you. r Alleluia, alleluia., GOSPEL Lk 6:27-38 [Love for Enemies] The supernatural virtues go beyond the natural virtues which even sinners practice. v The Lord be with you. r And with your spirit. = A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke. r Glory to you, O Lord. JESUS said to his disciples: To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward

FEB. 24 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time 210 will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and over flowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. The Gospel of the Lord. r Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.. No. 15, p. 18 PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS [Celebrate Mysteries] As we celebrate your mysteries, O Lord, with the observance that is your due, we humbly ask you, that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation. Through Christ our Lord. r Amen.. No. 21, p. 22 (Pref. P 29-36) COMMUNION ANT. Ps 9:2-3 [Joy in God] I will recount all your wonders, I will rejoice in you and be glad, and sing psalms to your name, O Most High., OR Jn 11:27 [Belief in Christ] Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God, who is coming into this world., PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION [Experience Salvation] Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we may experience the effects of the salvation

211 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time FEB. 24 which is pledged to us by these mysteries. Through Christ our Lord. r Amen.. No. 30, p. 77 Optional Solemn Blessings, p. 97, and Prayers over the People, p. 105

God will secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night. OCTOBER 20 29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ENTRANCE ANT. Cf. Ps 17 (16):6, 8 [Refuge in God] To you I call; for you will surely heed me, O God; turn your ear to me; hear my words. Guard me as the apple of your eye; in the shadow of your wings protect me.. No. 2, p. 10 COLLECT [Sincerity of Heart] Almighty ever-living God, grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. r Amen., FIRST READING Ex 17:8-13 [God Our Warrior] Moses prays without ceasing, not losing heart despite physical fatigue. 557

OCT. 20 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time 558 A reading from the Book of Exodus IN those days, Amalek came and waged war against Israel. Moses, therefore, said to Joshua, Pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand. So Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur. As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. Moses hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset. And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. The word of the Lord. r Thanks be to God., RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 121 [God Our Guardian] r Our help is from the Lord, who made heav n and earth. I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? My help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. r Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. May he not suffer your foot to slip; may he slumber not who guards you: indeed he neither slumbers nor sleeps, the guardian of Israel. r Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

559 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time OCT. 20 The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is your shade; he is beside you at your right hand. The sun shall not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. r Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. The LORD will guard you from all evil; he will guard your life. The LORD will guard your coming and your going, both now and forever. r Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth., SECOND READING 2 Tm 3:14 4:2 [Inspiration of Scripture] The Bible is the source of teaching, the safe guide for the man of God in every good work. A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy BELOVED: Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, and that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. The word of the Lord. r Thanks be to God.,

OCT. 20 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time 560 ALLELUIA Heb 4:12 [Living Word] r Alleluia, alleluia. The word of God is living and effective, discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart. r Alleluia, alleluia., GOSPEL Lk 18:1-8 [The Justice of God] Jesus urges us to pray without ceasing and to have faith in the goodness of God. v The Lord be with you. r And with your spirit. = A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke. r Glory to you, O Lord. JESUS told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, Render a just decision for me against my adversary. For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me. The Lord said, Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? The Gospel of the Lord. r Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.. No. 15, p. 18 PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS Grant us, Lord, we pray, a sincere respect for your gifts, [Respect Gifts]

561 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time OCT. 20 that, through the purifying action of your grace, we may be cleansed by the very mysteries we serve. Through Christ our Lord. r Amen.. No. 21, p. 22 (Pref. P 29-36) COMMUNION ANT. Cf. Ps 33 (32):18-19 [Divine Protection] Behold, the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, who hope in his merciful love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine., OR Mk 10:45 [Christ Our Ransom] The Son of Man has come to give his life as a ransom for many., PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION [Eternal Gifts] Grant, O Lord, we pray, that, benefiting from participation in heavenly things, we may be helped by what you give in this present age and prepared for the gifts that are eternal. Through Christ our Lord. r Amen.. No. 30, p. 77 Optional Solemn Blessings, p. 97, and Prayers over the People, p. 105

TREASURY OF PRAYERS PRAYERS BEFORE HOLY COMMUNION Act of Faith Lord Jesus Christ, I firmly believe that you are present in this Blessed Sacrament as true God and true Man, with your Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. My Redeemer and my Judge, I adore your Divine Majesty together with the angels and saints. I believe, O Lord; increase my faith. Act of Hope Good Jesus, in you alone I place all my hope. You are my salvation and my strength, the Source of all good. Through your mercy, through your Passion and Death, I hope to obtain the pardon of my sins, the grace of final perseverance and a happy eternity. Act of Love Jesus, my God, I love you with my whole heart and above all things, because you are the one supreme Good and an infinitely perfect Being. You have given your life for me, a poor sinner, and in your mercy you have even offered yourself as food for my soul. My God, I love you. Inflame my heart so that I may love you more. Act of Contrition O my Savior, I am truly sorry for having offended you because you are infinitely good and sin displeases you. I detest all the sins of my life and I desire to atone for them. Through the merits of your Precious Blood, wash from my soul all stain of sin, so that, cleansed in body and soul, I may worthily approach the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. 651
