THE COMMON SERVICE STAND M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie 1
God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. PRAYER AND PRAISE In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. GLORY BE TO GOD Gloria in Excelsis 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. Let us pray Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE WORD FIRST LESSON 1 Samuel 16:1-13 The LORD said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I see a king for myself among his sons. 2Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me. The LORD said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the person that I point out to you. 4So Samuel did what the LORD had told him to do and went to Bethlehem. Trembling with fear, the elders of the city came to meet him. They said, Do you come in peace? 5He said, Yes, in peace. I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. He consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they had come, he looked at Eliab and said, Certainly this is the LORD s anointed. 7But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at how tall he is, because I have rejected him. For the LORD does not look at things the way man does. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. 8Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, The LORD has not chosen this one either. 9Then Jesse had Shammah pass by. But Samuel said, The LORD has not chosen this one either. 10Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, The LORD has not chosen any of these. 11 Samuel said to Jesse, Is that all of the young men? Jesse said, There still is the youngest, but he is tending the sheep. Samuel said to Jesse, Send for him, for we cannot sit down to eat until he comes. 12He sent for him and brought him in. David had red hair and striking eyes, and was good-looking. The LORD said, Get up! Anoint him, because this is the one. 13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers. The Spirit of the LORD rushed on David with power from that day forward. After that Samuel set out and returned to Ramah. 5
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 110 The LORD says to my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion; you will rule in the midst of your enemies. The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. The LORD is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. Refrain He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. He will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 6
SECOND LESSON Titus 3:4-7 4But when the kindness and love of God our Savior toward mankind appeared, 5 he saved us not by righteous works that we did ourselves, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and the renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs in keeping with the hope of eternal life. VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Alleluia (Mk 1:11) STAND GOSPEL Luke 3:15-17,21,22 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: 15The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ. 16 John answered them all, I baptize you with water. But someone mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean out his threshing floor. He will gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 7
21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. While he was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: ATHANASIAN CREED This creed is named after Saint Athanasius, a staunch defender of the Christin faith in the fourth century. It was prepared to assist the Church in combating a false teaching that denied that God s Son and the Holy Spirit are of one being or Godhead with the Father. We are using this creed today because of ways the Triune God made Himself evident in the baptism of Jesus. Also, Jesus instructed us to conduct all baptisms in the name of the Triune God. Whoever wishes to be saved must, above all else, hold to the true Christian faith. Whoever does not keep this faith pure in all points will certainly perish forever. Now this is the true Christian faith: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being. For each person-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spiritis distinct, but the deity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory and coeternal in majesty. What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit. The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; 8
the Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal; yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite. In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord. For just as Christian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and Lord, so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three Lords. The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so that in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshiped as one God and one God worshiped as three persons. Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the Trinity. BE SEATED 9
