Pope John Paul II For our fathers who have given us life and love, that we may show them respect and love. For fathers who have lost a child through death, that their faith may give them hope, and their family and friends support and console them. For fathers who are ill, that they may restored to health. For fathers who have died, God, bring them into the joy of your kingdom. God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless our fathers. Strengthen them with the power of your Spirit. Let their example of faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with profound respect and love. We ask this in the name of Jesus. A Blessing Prayer for Fathers Blessed are you, Lord and Father of all life, you have given us the gift of the father of our family. Today we honor him. His love for us has been a sign of your divine affection and a sharing of your love. Bless him this day with your strength and grace that he may continue to be a sign of your presence and a priestly parent to our family. May we who are a part of this family assist him by our respect, obedience and care. Bless him, Lord, with happiness and health, peace and prosperity, so that we may, with him, live in harmony with all. Receive into your eternal kingdom all our fathers who have gone to their rest. Grant them life forever, as they gave us life here on this earth. W e ask this prayer in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Happy Father s Day

Trinity Sunday ~ Celebrating Three Persons in One God The Trinity is the manner in which we believe God is revealed to the world. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and of the Christian life. (CCC, #261) God is mystery, meaning that we just can t pin God down we re unable to know everything there is to know about God. Nevertheless, God has communicated to us just who He is. The Church expresses this as God s being revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three expressions or persons of one divine essence. The Trinity is One. We do not believe in three Gods but rather one God in a unity of three persons with one divine nature. One analogy is to think of the different states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Ice can become water, and water can become steam. All of these are the same essence and contain equal amounts of hydrogen and oxygen, but they appear in different forms. God the Father The first person of the Trinity is the Father the Creator from which everything flows and has its being. While the Son and the Holy Spirit are not lesser gods, they do proceed from the Father as God s own self-gift to humanity. In the Father, we experience God as Abba, Papa our loving and merciful Father. God the Son The second person of the Trinity is the Son Jesus himself, the God become man. We believe that God freely chose to come into human history in the person of Jesus. God became like us and died our human death for us. But because Jesus is God, He cannot be held by death and rises to new life. In Jesus, we experience God as Savior, Friend, Shepherd, Brother. God the Holy Spirit The third person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from both the Father and the Son. Jesus announces that his Father will send the Holy Spirit to be with and in the disciples, to teach and guide them. The Spirit is God s real presence living within all of us. In the Holy Spirit, we experience God as Counselor, Consoler, Advocate, Guide.

Trinity Three Persons Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier One in Perfect Love GOD Love could not be better commended to you than by the fact that it is called GOD. St. Augustine Father, we joyfully proclaim our faith in the mystery of your Godhead. You have revealed your glory as the glory also of your Son and of the Holy Spirit: three persons equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, yet one Lord, one God, ever to be adored in your everlasting glory. Preface for Trinity Sunday God is love. On this solid rock the entire faith of the Church is based. Pope Benedict XVI You must as a community do all in your power to be formed in the image of God. And what do we find in God? We see equality of persons and unity of essence. What should that teach you if not that you should all be one and equal? St. Vincent de Paul God does not exist in solitude, but in perfect communion. Therefore, the human person, made in the image of God, fulfills himself or herself in love. Three persons are one God because the Father is love, the Son is love and the Holy Spirit is love. The greatest proof that we are all made in the image of the Trinity is that only love makes us happy, because we live to love and to be loved. Pope Benedict XVI Tell me how it is that in this room there are three candles and but one light, and I will explain to you the mode of divine existence. John Wesley To examine the fact of the Trinity closely is rashness, to believe it is piety, to know it is life, and life eternal. St. Bernard The vocation to love makes the human person an authentic image of God: Man and woman come to resemble God to the extent that they become loving people. Pope Benedict XVI God hugs you. You are encircled by the arms of the mystery of God. Hildegarde of Bingen In speaking of the Trinity we must face the misery of language. St. Thomas Aquinas Our efforts to speak of the Trinity is comparable to the efforts of a drunken man shuffling along the street and trying to speak lucidly. If we imagine that we are able to get to grips with mystery, we are making a fool of ourselves. St. Gregory of Nyssa
