Rountons & Welbury Gazette December 2018

Advent Advent is the season before Christmas and these tends to get swallowed up by our Christmas celebrations. We start planning for Christmas months before and lights and displays go up in November. This is a shame as we need time to prepare for the magnitude of the event that is Christmas. On Christmas day we celebrate Christ coming into the world. But we could easily overlook this and considering the effort we put into buying presents and getting the house and the meal ready, it s not surprising that we do. Advent is the time that we make to prepare our hearts for God. The images are of making a way that Jesus can come to us by. In Luke s Gospel we hear John the Baptist say; Prepare the way for the Lord; make straight paths for Him. Every valley shall be filled in, and every mountain and hill made low. The crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God s salvation. So, this is our Advent task, to take some time away from our busy schedules and to prepare our hearts for Jesus to enter at Christmas. Best wishes, Jonathan Cooper The Vicarage, Brompton, Northallerton DL6 2QA 01609 772436 The churchwardens for the benefice are: Michael Nightingale, West Rounton 882435; Michael Dale, East Rounton 882517; Peter Walker, Welbury 882947; Joanne Hughes, Welbury 882268 Many thanks to all the volunteers who help deliver the gazette each month The editors would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helps in any way and wish all our readers a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year.

Mother s Union Mothers Union Deanery Advent Carol Service on Monday 10th December at Sowerby Church, starting at 2:00pm. Hambleton FoodShare Many thanks to those continuing to leave donations of food and toiletries in the container in Welbury church porch. These are collected on a regular basis and taken to the FoodShare collection points in Northallerton prior to distribution. If you are planning to donate any festive items (e.g. small Christmas puddings, small selection boxes) in December the earlier the better to ensure there is time to distribute the donations before Christmas. Press report from Welbury WI for November 2018 A unanimous vote of confidence was passed by all members when they reelected the President and Committee at our AGM. The theme for the rest of the evening was Suffragettes and Women of Importance which made for a colourful crowd with costumes from 100 years ago, also the presence of Mrs Gandhi and even the Queen Bee. The members had been busy and ingenious to provide a three-course meal all coloured green, white and purple to follow the Suffragette theme. It was enjoyed by all. Next month we meet at 8.00pm on December 13th to share in mince pies and carols.
