Page Two March 18, 2012 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR THANKS,, YOUY GUYS,, FORF ALL OF THOSE BIRTHDAY FLOWERS! However, flowers which bloom early this spring will have died long before summer arrives. Newly born infants who brighten the lives of loving parents will themselves grow old and follow those parents into the darkness of the grave. In the future the sun, which is our furnace, will exhaust its energy and the earth will endure a frozen death. As a matter of fact the entire universe is finite, limited in the resources which are needed for continued existence. Even as this old country curate writes this article the universe is slowly but surely passing away. None of this is quite as pessimistic as it sounds as we Catholics have been given the gift of Hope. Along with Faith Hope is like a bright light shining on the awesome truth within God s plan. According to God s plan death leads to life. This same plan applies to all of us. In the third Eucharistic Acclamation we proclaim: Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. In this Gospel Jesus said to Nicodemus: Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. Then St. John explained what the Lord had meant. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life. Jesus the Christ declared that He must be lifted up. It was His way of referring to His Crucifixion. The manner of His death was the kind inflicted on hardened criminals. The lives of the executed always ends in tragedy. And so the cross seemed to indicate a defeat, not a victory. Faith, however, tells us something totally different. The only crime that Jesus had committed was not a crime at all. He robbed death of its power. The cross was neither a tragedy nor a defeat but a glorious triumph. In that triumph we already share since God the Father in His great love has brought to us a life in God the Son when we were dead in sin. He has also reserved for us a place in His Heavenly Home so that in the ages to come He might display the great wealth of His favor toward us. This is precisely the truth that St. Paul told the Ephesians about in the second reading of this Mass. Brothers and sisters: God who is rich in mercy, because of the great love He had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ. By His grace you have been saved and raised up with Him, and seated with Him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. Lent gives all of us Catholics the opportunity to rise from the death of sin to the life of grace. We can accomplish this through prayer, fasting, and alms giving. Especially we can accomplish this through the Sacrament of Penance. Confessions are heard by this feeble Father here every Saturday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. During our annual parish mission Confessions will be heard by Father Bob Lombardo and myself on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holyweek, April 2, 3, and 4 at 8:00 p.m. Now is the right time for us to rise from our sinful graves. GOD BLESS OUR PARISH, ED GLEESON, PASTOR

Page Four March 18, 2012 OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR LENT THE WIT OF THE WISE OLD SAGE SIRACH AS RECORDED BY HIS SON SELECTIONS BY FR. ED GLEESON - There is a rascal bowed down in mourning but inwardly he is full of deceit. (19:26) - There is one who keeps silent because he has no answer; while another keeps silent because he knows when to speak. (20:6) - There may be good fortune for a man in adversity, and a windfall may result in a loss. (20:9) - There is a gift that profits you nothing, and there is a gift that brings a double return. (20:10) - A slip on the pavement is better than a slip of the tongue. (20:18) - An ungracious man is like a story told at the wrong time, which is continually on the lips of the ignorant. (20:19) - A man may for shame make promises to a friend, and needlessly make him an enemy. (20:23) - A thief is preferable to a habitual liar, but the lot of both is ruin. (20:25) - Better is the man who hides his folly then the man who hides his wisdom. (20:31) - Flee from sin as from a snake; for if you approach sin, it will bite you. (21:2) - The prayer of a poor man goes from his lips to the ears of God, and his judgment comes speedily. (21:5) - A man who builds his house with other people s money is like one who gathers stones for his burial mound. (21:8) - Whoever keeps the law controls his thoughts, and wisdom is the fulfillment of the fear of the Lord. (21:11) - The mind of a fool is like a broken jar; it will hold no knowledge. (21:15) - Like a house that has vanished, so is wisdom to a fool; and the knowledge of the ignorant is unexamined talk. (21:18) - To a senseless man education is fetters on his feet, and like manacles on his right hand. (21:19) - To a sensible man education is like a golden ornament, and like a bracelet on the right arm. (21:21)

Page Five Fourth Sunday of Lent OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR LENT THE WIT OF THE WISE OLD SAGE SIRACH AS RECORDED BY HIS SON SELECTIONS BY FR. ED GLEESON - A boor peers into the house from the door, but a cultivated man remains outside. (21:23) - When an ungodly man curses his adversary, he cures his own soul. (21:27) - It is a disgrace to be the father of an undisciplined son. (22:3) - Mourning for the dead lasts seven days, but for a fool or an ungodly man it lasts all of his life. (22:12) - A mind settled on an intelligent thought is like the stucco decoration on the wall of a colonnade. (22:17) - As for reviling, arrogance, disclosure of secrets, and treacherous blows any friend will flee. (22:22) - The vapor and smoke of the furnace precede the fire; so insults precede bloodshed. (22:24) - O Lord, Father and God of my life, do not give me haughty eyes, and remove from me evil desire. (23:4) - Listen, my children, to instruction concerning speech; the one who observes it will never be caught. (23:7) - Do not accustom your mouth to oaths, and do not habitually utter the name of the Holy One. (23:9) - A man who swears many oaths will be filled with iniquity, and the scourge will not leave his house. (23:11) - Do not accustom your mouth to lewd vulgarity, for it involves sinful speech. (23:13) - To a fornicator all bread tastes sweet; he will never cease until he dies. (23:17) - A woman will be punished who leaves her husband and provides an heir by a stranger. (23:22) - Wisdom will praise herself, as will glory in the midst of her people. (24:1) - By following the Most High I grew tall like a cedar in Lebanon and like rose plants in Jericho. (24:13-14) - Like a vine wisdom caused loveliness to bud and her blossoms became glorious and abundant fruit. (24:17)
