On behalf of the community of OLOP, I sincerely thank the Manningham City Council for their support not only of OLOP, but also to community groups across the City of Manningham. This life saving device will be located in the foyer of the Worship Centre. It is the same device that is in place in the OLOP Primary School. Whilst it is hoped that this devise will never be required, we, the OLOP community, need to be ready to operate the defribulator. The supplier has offered training for up to 20 persons, and the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is keen to take advantage of this to the maximum. It is our goal to have regulars at the Saturday Vigil Mass and Sunday Mass trained. The training is not demanding, will be undertaken in a group session and is expected to take between 30 minutes to 1 hour. The device is basically automatic, and talks the responder through the process. The training will be co-ordinated through the Parish. To this end, we are seeking names of parishioners willing to attend this training. Some may already have experience/training in the operation of a defribulator, so even if you feel you do not need re-training, we would appreciate you supplying your name for reference. In the foyer of the Worship Centre will be a form to complete for those able to assist. Please fill in the details and we will be in contact with you in the near future. Parish AGM Coming soon in March The Parish AGM is scheduled for March. Date to be confirmed. Could all ministry coordinators, groups please start compiling your reports for the 2017 AGM booklet. When completed, please submit to Liza in the Parish Office by the 2nd of March. The Working with children check can be done online the link is http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/. It is free for a volunteer to apply but you will need a current/recent photograph. The Police check does have a cost associated with this, and this will be paid for by the Parish. This can be done at the Parish Office, you will need a current passport and Drivers license in order to comply with the 100 point requirements. In order to make this as easy and painless as possible, both applications can be done at the Parish Office for your convenience. You will need however to go to Doncaster Heights Post Office in Jackson Court to finalize your application for the Working with Children check as you will need a submit your photograph. For those who already have their Working With Children Check in Place, could you please check that this is still current. All cards can be renewed 3 months in advance. If you need more information, advice or help with this, please get in touch with Liza in the Parish Office. All applications can be done at the Parish Office. We hope that you will be able to assist us in being compliant with the requirement and trust that you will understand the importance of getting this done.

PREPARATION FOR THE PLENARY COUNCIL 2020 2021 The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has decided to hold a Plenary Council in 2020 and 2021. The Council will be about the Future of the Catholic Church in Australia. The Archbishop of Brisbane, Mark Coleridge is the key spokesperson for the event. Archbishop Mark has said that we need to make important decisions for the future of our Church and I hope that the agenda of our Plenary Council will be the result of genuine consultation within the Church, to be held between now and 2020. Anyone who wants to can have a say. He has clearly stated that everything is on the table and that this Plenary Council is a decision-making council. Ms Lana Turvey-Collins, the Plenary Council Facilitator, said It s an opportunity to engage with all Catholics in Australia those who lead, those who work in Catholic organisations, those who may feel they don t have a voice, those who feel they are outside the Church and those who show up every Sunday for Mass a process inclusive of all. It s about becoming the kind of Australian Catholic community which Pope Francis is calling us to be: a community of communities she said. The Vatican has yet to approve the holding of the Plenary Council, but this is expected to occur in the next few months. Given the enormity of the task, the Yarra Deanery, of which we are a part, has decided to commence the process by inviting each of the parishes in the Deanery to participate in a meaningful dialogue to focus on three key questions: 1. What do we want our Church to look like in 2025. 2. What does our Church look like now? 3. What do we need to do to bridge the gap? Initially, we invite the Family Groups and School Staff to discuss these questions, provide feedback on their deliberations, and provide recommendations concerning the process going forward to involve the entire parish and the school community. Medjugorje Peace Conference - 3 March 2018 David Parkes, who has a collection of worship music, much of which were sold through the Divine Mercy Publications and who the OLOP pilgrims met in Medjugorje in 2017, will be visiting Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand in Feb/Mar 2018. Among his many talents and gift for humour and story-telling, David regularly shares his testimony on his healing and conversion and his experiences at Medjugorje. David will be in Melbourne on 3rd March concluding with the 4th Medjugorje Peace Conference at St. Mark s Catholic Church in Fawkner from 9am to 5pm. With permission from Archbishop Hart to host this Conference in Melbourne, other guest speakers at the conference will include Fr Leon from St James' Parish in Medjugorje (who had an apparition when he first visited Medjugorje at the age of 19), Fr Andrew Grace from Griffith, NSW and Fr Peter Ferwerda of the Bendigo Diocese. If you are interested to join the pilgrimage in 2019, do join us at what we hope will be a deeply prayerful and inspiring Conference at a time in the life of our country and our world which is much in need of prayer and peace. More information about David s events and the 4th Peace Conference will follow soon.stay tuned. We would like to wish all of our Parishioners who will be celebrating the Year of the Dog a Very Happy New Year. We wish you a fabulous reunion with all of your family members and a joyous time catching up. Happy New Year

Year B 2 nd Sunday of Lent - 25 th February 2018 GOSPEL Jerusalem Bible 1966 by Darton, Longman & Todd Ltd and Doubleday & Company Inc. The Spirit drove Jesus out into the wilderness and he remained there for forty days, and was tempted by Satan. He was with the wild beasts, and the angels looked after him. After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the good news from God. The time has come, he said, and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent and believe the good news. (Mark 1:12 15) DID YOU KNOW? Points of interest and Catholic lore *Lent lasts for forty days in imitation of Jesus forty days in the wilderness. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday. * There is evidence of Lenten preparation for Easter very early in the Church s history but its practices became more regularised after the Council of Nicaea (325CE). *In years gone by, Catholics did not eat meat on any Friday, and later, on Fridays in Lent. Today there are two days of the year when Catholics are expected to not eat meat Ash Wednesday and Good Friday but all the Fridays of Lent are still days when we should fast. Sharing the Tradition The Lent-Easter-Pentecost cycle should be seen as a unified whole. Among the earliest of the Feasts which were celebrated by the early Church were Easter and Pentecost. The preparatory season of Lent was added later as a final period of intense preparation for those catechumens seeking baptism. It was also the final period of penance for those who had sinned before they were received back to the Eucharist. *Reflect on the ceremonies of Ash Wednesday and especially the Rite of Election. What do they mean? What did they mean to you? * Explain the significance of the period of purification and enlightenment in the Rite. What is the meaning of penance? Discuss appropriate expressions of penance during Lent, including the possibility of taking on rather than giving up.
