The Building Ministry Team will make a motion to authorize spending on capital improvement to the church building. Pastor David, Scoutmaster Jeff McCaw, Ethan, and Dave Barringer. Ethan Fowler achieved the rank of Eagle Scout April 22 at his Court of Honor ceremony held at Spirit of Grace Church. Ethan, 16, is a member of Hood River Lions Club Troop 282 and a sophomore at Hood River Valley High School. He is the son of Jennifer & Skip Fowler. To earn the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, 13 of which are required, and demonstrate leadership and community service by organizing and carrying out an Eagle project. For his project, Ethan coordinated a work crew of scouts to install boot brushes and signage for 5 trailheads on the Washington side of Bonneville Dam. These boot brushes will encourage visitors to clean their boots before and after hiking. Cleaning helps minimize the spread of invasive weeds. 1
Dear Friends, OUR This is my first newsletter article since returning from study leave on March 16. I want to thank you all for your support of my studies. During leave, I managed to write about 25,000 words of my 90,000 word dissertation. I m now up to about 48,000 words. I m continuing to work on it each week. I hope to finish it within the next year. The last step will be to publicly defend the finished dissertation in front of the three professors on my committee: Gregory Robbins, Pamela Eisenbaum, and Miguel De La Torre. If I m successful, I will have earned a PhD in New Testament and Early Christianity. Again, I want to thank you for all the support you have given me through this process and for how supportive you have been of our family. During the Season of Easter, I ve been preaching from the Acts of the Apostles. We ve been studying some of the actions of the very early Jesus-followers, shortly after his death and resurrection. It s not my habit to preach a sermon series, but this year it seemed right to preach an Easter in Acts, to explore the continuing work of the Holy Spirit in the very early church. This Summer I m going to take an even larger step out of the ordinary and preach a Summer of Saints. Both in the Lutheran and in the Methodist traditions, there is a calendar of saints, a list of Christians that are considered worthy of study and emulation. Unlike Roman Catholics, we do not pray to saints, but we do study their lives as a way of grasping more fully what it means to be a Christian, how Christian values are lived out in the real world. Our Summer of Saints will introduce us to three different biblical Marys, apostles like Peter, Paul, James, and Barnabas, and even some more contemporary figures. On May 13th, I ll be bridging the two series with the story of the littleremembered 13th apostle: Matthias. I hope we will all find the study of these saints both edifying and inspiring, as we continue to watch for the movement of the Holy Spirit and to relearn what it means to follow Jesus in our own day. Many blessings to you during this last bit of Spring before Summer, Your servant in Christ, +Pastor David Weekly Reflections May 6 Acts 10:45 Is it hard to believe God might accept certain groups of people? Who? May 13 Acts 1:21-22 As a follower of Jesus, what acts of God have you witnessed? May 20 Acts 2:17 What are your dreams for God s people? May 27 John 3:8 What evidence do you see for the movement of the Holy Spirit? 2
