Page 4 From the Pastor's Desk: 4th Sunday of Easter Getting more out of Mass Preparing for Mass by Praying at home The joy of being Catholic is in the Eucharist. The Eucharistic Sacrifice, also called Holy Mass, is the wellspring ofour Catholic life and also its summit. Every Catholic, at every moment, is caught up in one of three movements: either he or she is on the way to church, giving witness to the Kingdom by preparing for the Sacred Banquet, or he is in church, participating fully, consciously and actually in the Sacred Liturgy, or he is sent forth, that is, sent from Mass into the world to bear witness to that which we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked upon and touched with our hands, all that concerns the Word of Life 1 (John 1:1). Thus the Church lives from Eucharist to Eucharist, amazed at the wonder of so great a gift and awaiting her blessed hope (Titus 2:13). This is why Catholics need to understand the importance of recognizing that our Eucharistic life begins on the way to church. We should go to church with a heart made ready for the Mystery we will encounter. Yours in Christ There are a couple of things we can do to prepare. First we can read the texts appointed for the day s Mass. These include the first reading from the Old Testament, the psalm response, the epistle from the New Testament Fr. Robert and finally the. You can easily find these readings on many Catholic calendars, in your missal or on the internet at http://www.uscb.org/nab/. When you prepare for Mass by reading the readings in advance, try to let them resonate in your heart, read the texts aloud, slowly and with attention. Repeat any phrases that strike you as beautiful or especially apt. Then turn it around. Let the Word which God speaks to you in the Scripture become your prayer by offering it back to God. Then, for the next few moments, remain in silence. Adore the God Who has spoken to you and ask Him to make you hungry for the daily bread (Luke 11:4). which you will receive at Mass. Go to church with hunger and desire, you won t be sent NEWEST HISTORY OF ST. FLORIAN PHOTO away empty cf. Luke 1:53. Faithful to his promise God Fr. Robert P. Marchwiany, Pastor, with the TO TEACH will fill you with all the good things cf. (Luke 1:53). WHO CHRIST IS COMMITTEE By Fr. Mark Kirby, O. Cist. Spring of 2016 Dear Parishioners of St. Florian, Thank you for your generosity and for all you do for St. Florian. At this time, when the heating season is approaching, we are trying to meet the demands that this means. As you know, our heating bills are high every year. Our old Church boiler is not only old, it is not sufficient for our needs. Once it is turned on our gas bills skyrocket because the controls on the boiler are not precise. We are still waiting for the TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS campaign to give us money to install a new boiler, but we need to wait until the campaign is over before we receive any money, so there is still a couple of years ahead of us. Meanwhile we have to face high heating bills. We are still paying on last winter's bills and the new heating season will begin in about 2 months. To prevent the accumulation of all the heating bills I would like to ask you to increase your donation in the ENERGY ENVELOPE. I hope that the heating season will be mild for all of us, but once the Church boiler is turned on we are still paying for the usage. I will keep you in my prayers, please keep me in yours. Cenacle ofthe Eucharistic Face ofjesus

April 22, 2018 Page 5 Silence Paul Turner THE ST. FLORIAN Several times during the Mass, the liturgical texts invite us to observe silence. It makes you wonder if the folks who wrote those instructions had any idea how noisy a typical pew can be. Kneelers, hymnals, kids, and coughing make it hard for anyone to remember what silence sounds like. Still, the liturgy soldiers on, suggesting that at certain moments we just keep quiet. For example, when the priest says, "Let us pray," he really means what he says. How do you normally pray? Hands folded? Eyes closed? Calming yourself down so you can concentrate on the presence of God? Keeping silence? He's inviting us to assume our prayer position. But sometimes he's busy signaling the server, flipping pages, and adjusting his glasses. Sometimes were whispering, looking at the bulletin, or just wishing he'd get on with it so we can sit down again. Silence here is an invitation to pray, not to squirm. Another location for silent prayer is after communion. The liturgy bids us all to be quiet for a while to thank God for the wondrous Sacrament we have received. Sometimes people want their silence during communion; they don't want to be disturbed by singing. Others can't stand the silence after communion because they want to get out of the parking lot before everyone else. But silence follows communion. Communion itself is one of the most important times to sing. It gathers us as the body of Christ and wraps us in joyful song, since spoken words or silent thought can't express what music can. Then, after all have received the mystery, we pause together to meditate on its splendor. Singing followed by silence helps the whole assembly celebrate communion together. Sometimes we are observe silence after the readings, or after the homily. The first Eucharistic prayer invites us to silence while we ask God to remember those, living or deceased, "for whom we now pray." Silence is hard in our culture. Most of us habitually turn on a TV or radio. But we also know the benefits of being in silence once in a while outside, enjoying nature, getting some quiet time alone at home or in our room. Silence is golden. And the liturgy yearns for us to have some. HOLY NAME SOCIETY IS SPONSORING A SPRING BBQ Menu includes: Hamburger, Polish Sausage, Potato Salad, Coleslaw, Drink, and Dessert.
