PRELUDE I Will Serve Him arr. Robert J. Hughes Betty Heggemeyer WELCOME Please stand CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. C: Amen P: Let us confess our sin, calling for God s transforming power. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P: Source of all life, C: We confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. P: God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. C: Amen 1

PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray, Sovereign God, raise your throne in our hearts. Created by you, let us live in your image; created for you, let us act for your glory; redeemed by you, let us give you what is yours, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen WORD A Reading from Psalm 96 L 1 O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples. 4 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods. 5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 6 Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts. 9 Worship the LORD in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth. 10 Say among the nations, "The LORD is king! The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity." 11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; 4

12 let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy 13 before the LORD; for he is coming, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth. (Psalm 96:1-13) L: Word of God. Word of Life. C: Thanks be to God. 8:45 ANTHEM With My Song Roger Copeland, setting by Jack Schrader Chancel Choir Please stand for the Gospel Acclamation 5

P: A Reading from St. Matthew C: Glory to you, O Lord When the Pharisees came, they had a consultation in order that they might entrap him in his own words. They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians saying, Teacher we know that you are truthful, and you teach the way of God according to the truth. You don t show any favor. For you show no partiality. Therefore, tell us what you think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? But knowing their maliciousness, Jesus said to them, Why do you test me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for taxes. They brought a denarius to him. He said to them, Whose image is this and whose inscription? They said to him, Caesar s. Then he said to them, Therefore payback to Caesar the things belonging to Caesar and payback to God the things belonging to God. Upon hearing him, they were stunned, and leaving him they departed. (Matthew 22:15-22) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE & NOISY OFFERING Offering will be going to Habitat for Humanity SERMON Pastor Michelle Carlson 6

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P: Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all of God s creation. (At the conclusion of each prayer) L: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting the power of Christ and the gifts of the Spirit. C: Amen. 8

EXCHANGE OF PEACE P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. We greet one another in the name of the Lord using words such as, Peace be with you. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and light. C: Amen. 10

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE: P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, we praise your name and join the unending hymn: 11

SANCTUS WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son, that all those who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 12

P: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. THE LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you.
