PRUEBAS DE ACCESO A LA UNIVERSIDAD CURSO 2002-2003 CONVOCATORIA: SEPTIEMBRE LENGUA EXTRANJERA: INGLÉS The Prestige Disaster. The picturesque coastal villages of Galicia in Northwest Spain have been left devastated by a damaged oil tanker which was carrying 70,000 tons of oil. The ship has broken in two and sunk off the north-western coast of Spain, threatening the area with an ecological disaster. Thousands of tonnes of thick fuel came out of the Prestige before it sank in the Atlantic last November, turning pure, clean beaches and rocks on the Galician coast into fetid areas of Chapapote. Even animals have been affected by the thick oil and many fish and birds have died after being covered by the viscous liquid. Officials speculate that the clean-up could take years. The fishing and harvesting of the region s rich shellfish resources have been stopped along nearly 500 kilometres of the Galician coast, leaving thousands of fishermen out of work and creating an inevitable effect on the entire economy. The disaster affects ship repairers, drivers who transport the catch, and businesses where the fishermen spend their salaries, as well as restaurants and hotels used by tourists which may be ruined by such terrible damage to Galicia s beautiful scenery of mountains, forests and wild beaches. The incident has provoked a dispute between Britain and Spain. Spain accuses London of failing to properly inspect the ship on its previous trips to Gibraltar, a responsibility Britain refuses to accept. E.U. legislation taking effect in 2005 would have stopped the single-hulled ship entering waters of European Union member states. Glossary: Hulled: The hull of a ship is the external part of it.
