SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY JANUARY 13, 2019 BAPTISM OF THE LORD GATHERING AROUND THE WORD 11:00 AM RINGING OF THE BELL OPENING VOLUNTARY DEEP RIVER GERALD NEAR BRYAN LOHR, ORGAN WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. * CALL TO WORSHIP God is with us always and calls us each by name. When we pass through difficulties and stress, God is with us and calls us by name. When we are discouraged and feel lost and alone, God is with us, calling us by name and healing us. Let us worship the God who knows us and calls us by name. * HYMN #463 HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION FOUNDATION Christmas, Epiphany, and the Baptism of the Lord are the great feast days that begin the Christian year. All three announce Jesus identity and relationship with God he is God with us, the Messiah, and the Beloved Son. In celebrating Jesus baptism, we also celebrate our own baptism rooted in Christ. In baptism we are joined to Christ and his church, called to share in Jesus ministry, and are declared the children of God.

CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Loving God, we confess we often forget that our baptism connects us to Jesus. We do not always remember that we stand in a long line of those marked for service, and that Jesus is at the head of that line. Yet you have called us by name, knowing each of us, and loving us. Even so, we have failed to act as your people and thus devalue our baptisms. We retreat to safe places in the face of challenge or uncertainty. We shrink from the risks you invite us to take on. We fail to notice your amazing action in our midst and in the world. Forgive us, O God. Turn us around and help us recognize anew who we are as those who have been baptized in Jesus name. Then make us willing to act and serve as he did, that others may also be drawn to his way. This we ask through the power and love of Jesus Christ our Lord (Silence for personal prayer and reflection.) KYRIE ELEISON #576 LORD, HAVE MERCY SINGAPURA Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us. WORDS OF ASSURANCE * RESPONSE #582 GLORY TO GOD, WHOSE GOODNESS SHINES ON ME GLORY TO GOD Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me, and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me, and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen World without end, without end. Amen World without end, without end. Amen As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen. * PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. (Please greet one another with signs of peace.) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION PROCLAIMING THE WORD FIRST READING LUKE 3:15-22 PEW BIBLE, NT, P. 56 ANTHEM BE NOT AFRAID CRAIG COURTNEY THE SANCTUARY CHOIR Be not afraid, for I have redeemed you. Be not afraid, I have called you by name. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you pass through the floods, they will not sweep o er you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be consumed. You are mine, you are precious in my sight. My love for you is everlasting. My love for you shall have no end. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you pass through the floods, they will not sweep o er you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be consumed. You are mine, you are precious in my sight. Based on Isaiah 43, the anthem was written for Third Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, IA, which was forced to relocate due to flooding in 1992.

GOSPEL READING ISAIAH 43:1-7 PEW BIBLE, OT, P. 631 SERMON REV. WALT PETERS RESPONDING TO THE WORD * HYMN #484 OUT OF DEEP UNORDERED WATER RUSTINGTON RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Lord and life-giving Spirit, who charged the waters with life when first the world began: Make us dead to sin, but alive to you. Saving Lord, who sheltered us with Noah in the ark upon the flood: Drown our sin and raise us to new life. Giver of freedom, who led your people out of slavery through the waters that did not overwhelm: Drown our sin and raise us to new life. O God, our provider, who gives thirsty people water from a rock: Make us dead to sin, but alive to you. Holy Lord, who gives water to purify what is unclean: Drown our sin and raise us to new life. Brooding Spirit, who anointed Jesus with your power of life no death could conquer: Make us dead to sin, but alive to you. Risen Lord Jesus Christ, who poured yourself out as a drink offering on our behalf, filling us with your Spirit: Make us dead to sin, but alive to you. Spirit of the Living God, On this Baptism of the Lord Sunday, we mark the inauguration of Jesus public ministry in his baptism. Consequently, this is also an occasion to celebrate our own baptism as well. who charges the waters of baptism with resurrection power so we might live as part of God s New Creation: Drown our sin and raise us to new life. Drench us once more in your life-giving Spirit, Almighty God, that we might be cleansed, sustained, and anointed with your power as we proclaim with boldness and live with joy the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to whom be all honor and dominion and glory now and forevermore. Amen.

Through our baptism into Christ, we were redeemed from our slavery to the powers of sin and made citizens of God s Commonwealth. Let us remember what God has done and is doing by renewing our baptismal vows, renouncing sin and professing faith in Christ Jesus. Do you renounce the ways of sin that separate you from the love of God? Accepting the Father s love, I renounce all that makes me less than a child of God. Do you renounce all powers in the world that defy God s Way of Life for all? In the name of Christ Jesus, I renounce them. Will you resist the forces of sin that hold the world in captivity? With the power of the Holy Spirit, I will resist them. Trusting the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from evil to seek good? By the grace of God, I do. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the world? I believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. Will you follow the Spirit of the living Lord and live in accord with God s Way? By God s grace, I will walk in the Spirit Way. INVITATION TO OFFERING MUSICAL OFFERING OCEANS ARR. HEATHER LYNN SORENSEN FIRST PRESBYTERIAN YOUNG ADULTS You call me out upon the waters, the great unknown where feet may fail. And there I find you in the mystery, in oceans deep, my faith will stand. And I will call upon your name and keep my eyes above the waves. When oceans rise, my soul will rest in your embrace. I am yours and you are mine. Your grace abounds in deepest waters, your sovereign hand will be my guide. Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me, you've never failed and you won't start now. Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders. Let me walk upon the waters, wherever you would call me. Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander and my faith will be made stronger in the presence of my Savior. Many of us give our monetary offering weekly. Many of us give our offering monthly or even yearly. This morning, even if you are not putting your monetary offering in the plate today, please touch the inside of the plate when it goes by. Guest/Supply Preacher...Rev. Walt Peters Liturgist.....Wesley Mason Director of Music Ministries...Bryan Lohr Musicians...First Presbyterian Young Adults and The Sanctuary Choir Sound Technician.........Joe Aurigemma Ushers...Carl Belt and Joe Weaver THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CONGREGATION-CORPORATION of First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland, Maryland is called by the Session for Sunday, January 27, 2019. The purposes of the meeting are: To hear the Annual Report of the Session To elect an Auditor to the Auditing Committee To elect a new class of Ruling Elders To elect a 2019 Congregational Nominating Committee To receive the 2019 budget To elect Officers of the Corporation To conduct any other business properly coming before the Congregation-Corporation. -By Order of the Session GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME VISITORS: We are glad you found your way to First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland. For more information about opportunities to worship, learn and serve with us, we encourage you to visit the table outside the church office. You can also learn more about us at www.fpc-cumberland.org and www.facebook.com/first.pres.cumberland. Childcare is provided in the nursery. An usher will be glad to direct you there. CHILDREN IN WORSHIP: While we do provide a nursery for young children, we also welcome you to bring your child with you to worship. We have "worship bags" in the back of the sanctuary that include materials for drawing and coloring, as well as Bible stories and Bible word-find games. After the Time for Young Disciples, children may go to the nursery for a Bible lesson or remain in the sanctuary. Our "Young Children in Worship" pew card contains information about why young children should be encouraged to come to worship and how parents and others can engage them more fully in worship. THE PRAY-GROUND is a special space in the sanctuary for our youngest children and their families. All families are welcome to come and sit in the right front pews with their children seated on the rug. This front row seat will allow God s youngest children to participate in the service in a place where they can see and hear best. There will be activities provided so that their little hands are kept busy while participating in worship. Jesus said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it (Mark 10:14-15).

FRIENDSHIP PADS: Please locate and sign the red pad in your pew, tear off the sheet and place it in the collection plate during the offering. This important practice allows us to be mindful of new folks and long-time members as well, and is a good way to learn (or remember) the names of those with whom you are seated. If you are visitor, please fill out the Welcome to First Presbyterian Church card in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate when it comes by during the service. PERSONAL LISTENING DEVICES: (amplifiers) are available in the back of the church for use during worship. Please see an usher for assistance. WORSHIP BROADCASTS ON YOUTUBE: To view worship services live or to view taped worship services, go to www.youtube.com (First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland Live Stream) or go to our website http://www.fpccumberland.org/ and click on click here to view our worship service located at the bottom of the home page. SANCTUARY FLOWERS: The flowers in the sanctuary this morning are given to the Glory of God in loving memory of Art and Jean Ennis, Al and Anna May Kazary, and Lee Ennis Rosenblath, by Bob and Sharon Kazary. Please contact Michael Levitas or the church office if you would like to sponsor flowers for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary or in memory or honor of someone. You may specify live or silk flowers. Silk flower money will be directed to the Special Ministries Fund.
