THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY, 18 th 25 th January 2019 Each year the Catholic Church takes responsibility for organising this important week when the various denominations across the Catholic Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante come together to pray for the unity of the Church. Father Joaquín, the Parish Priest (Parroco), at Cristo Resucitado is the Bishop s officer for Ecumenical and Interreligious dialogue. Our ecumenical participation, particularly with the Catholic Church, is important across our Chaplaincy and, naturally, is encouraged right across the Church of England Diocese in Europe. Please note these special services in which our Chaplaincy is involved and try and come along to at least one of them. It would be good to have much more Church of England

representation at the service in Torrevieja and Cristo Resucitado and people from across the Chaplaincy at the services at San Fulgencio and Pilar de la Horadada. The dates of the services are as follows: Sunday 20 th January 1800 Inmaculada Concepción Church, Torrevieja with all the Christian denominations of the area Monday 21 st January 1930 Catholic Church, Pilar de la Horadada with the Catholic parish and Romanian Orthodox Church Tuesday 22 nd January 1800 Catholic Church, San Fulgencio with the Catholic parish Wednesday 23 rd January 2000 Centro Ecuménico, Cristo Resucitado with the Catholic parish, Romanian and Russian Orthodox Churches, German Protestant congregation Don t forget to keep Father Richard informed of people who need home visits and hospital visits and Holy Communion at home. He is always willing to respond to pastoral and sacramental needs. Father Richard writes: NEW ELECTORAL ROLL Every six years Church of England parishes have to create new electoral rolls. No names are carried forward from the previous roll. Every Chaplaincy in the Diocese in Europe has to do this as we are part of the Church of England. Beginning this weekend, new electoral roll forms will be available from the Wardens of each of our churches. It is important that you fill in such a form as long as you qualify to be on this Chaplaincy s electoral roll. The electoral roll is the foundation of the whole structure of synodical government in the church. Under the Church Representation Rules any lay persons are entitled to have their names entered on the roll if they (i) are baptised and aged 16 or over; (ii) have signed a form of application for enrolment; and either (iii) are members of the Church of England or of any Church in communion with the Church of England being resident in the parish or (not being resident in the parish) having habitually attended public worship in the parish during the six months prior to the application for enrolment; or: (iv) are members in good standing of a Church (not in communion with the Church of England) which subscribes to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity declaring themselves also to be members of the Church of England and having habitually attended public worship in the parish during the period of six months prior to enrolment. The forms must be given back to the Warden of your church between Wednesday 30 th January and Wednesday 13 th February. No forms will be accepted after Wednesday 13 th February. The forms can scanned in and sent but it is vital you return the original too on

or before Wednesday 13 th February. This means the two Sundays, 3 rd and 10 th February, are the two crucial weekends to return your form. Danny Gidman, the electoral roll officer, will then collate these forms and produce the new electoral roll which will then be displayed (names only) outside our churches, as prescribed by the Church Representation Rules, before the Annual Chaplaincy Meeting which takes place on Monday 11 th March. May God bless you all. Father Richard DATES FOR CONGREGATIONAL MEETINGS Lago Jardín Saturday 16 th February San Fulgencio Sunday 3 rd March Los Balcones Sunday 10 th February La Siesta Sunday 17 th February Campoverde Sunday 10 th February A NOTE ABOUT THE LITURGICAL YEAR In the Western churches, the Epiphany ( manifestation ) became an occasion to celebrate one element in the story of Christ s birth, the visit of the far-travelled magi, understood as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. Matthew s account speaks simply of wise men from the east ; later tradition fixed their number at three, made them kings and recalled their resonant names Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In this perspective, Epiphanytide is an apt season to pray for the worldwide mission of the Church. The feast of the Conversion of St Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, appropriately falls on January 25th, as does the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. In the Eastern churches, the Epiphany is, rather, the celebration of Christ s baptism at the hands of John, when the heavens were opened and a voice from heaven declared Jesus to be God s beloved Son. The miracle of Cana in Galilee, where Jesus first manifested his glory, follows immediately: Manifest at Jordan s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; and at Cana wedding-guest in thy Godhead manifest. (Christopher Wordsworth) The arrangement of the Sundays of Epiphany in the Revised Common Lectionary deliberately draws out these aspects and restores the threefold nature of the Epiphany. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is celebrated at the start of February as the child who has been manifested to the magi at his birth is now recognized by Simeon and Anna, when he comes to be presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of God s people Israel. But the redemption he will bring must be won through suffering; the Incarnation is directed to the Passion; and Simeon s final words move our attention away from the celebration of Christmas and towards the mysteries of Easter.
