S E S S I O N 7 A Foretaste of Paradise The dignity of the human person, created male and female, is such that there is none like it on all the earth. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve did not endure in their high calling.! The Creation of Humanity God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27).! Man became the image of God not only through his own humanity, but also through the communion of persons, which man and woman form from the very beginning. The function of the image is that of mirroring the one who is the model, of reproducing its own prototype. Man becomes the image of God not so much in the moment of solitude as in the moment of communion (Pope John Paul II, General Audience, November 14, 1979).! The Temptation of Humanity The serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Did God say, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?' You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate.!!!!!!!genesis 3:1-6! 1

The Fall of Humanity And the eyes of them both were opened: and when they perceived themselves to be naked, they sewed together fig leaves, and made themselves clothes. And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in paradise at the afternoon air, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God amidst the trees of paradise.!!!!!!!genesis 3:7-8! The Reality of Original Sin Sin and death have entered into man s history in some way through the very heart of that unity that had from the beginning been formed by the man and woman, created and called to become one flesh (Pope John Paul II, March 5, 1980).! The family is placed at the heart of the great struggle between good and evil, between life and death, between love and all that is opposed to love (Pope John Paul II, Letter to Families, #23).! The Fate of Adam and Eve The Lord God sent Adam forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.!!!!!!!genesis 3:23-24! Fortunately, God had a plan. A new Adam and a new Eve remained faithful and reopened for us the pathway to Paradise.! 2

A New Adam and a New Eve Source: On the Apostolic Preaching, St. Irenaeus of Lyons, trans. Behr, J., St. Vladimir s Seminary Press, 1997, p. 61. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14).! The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you (Luke 1:35).! It was necessary for Adam to be recapitulated in Christ, that mortality might be swallowed up in immortality, and Eve in Mary, that a virgin, become an advocate for a virgin, might undo and destroy the virginal disobedience by virginal obedience (St. Irenaeus of Lyons, On the Apostolic Preaching, #33).! Behold the Man I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father (John 14:31).! Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. And the soldiers plaited a crowned of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, Behold, the man! (John 19:1-5).! The Consummation of a Union Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother (John 19:25).! I thirst (John 19:28).! It is consummated (John 19:30).! Into your hands I commend my spirit (Luke 23:46).! But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water (John 19:34).! Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, a sword will pierce through your own soul (Luke 2:34-35)! Paradise Reopened Israel builds the Temple in Jerusalem upon the foundation stone, which was believe to be the stone upon which God built the world.! The Temple was seen as a type of Paradise.! Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom (Matthew 27:50-51).! We have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way which he opened for us through the curtain, that is through the flesh (Hebrews 10:19-21).! 3

The Church as a Symbol of Paradise This reopened Paradise was planted in the Church. It is to the Paradise of the Church that bridegroom and bride come to offer their union to God.! What then was Paradise is now represented by the Church (St. Augustine).! The assembly of the saints bears resemblance to Paradise: in it each day is plucked the fruit of Him who gives life to all; in it, my brethren, is trodden the cluster of grapes, to be the Medicine of Life (St. Ephrem).! The Church becomes a well of satisfaction by this gift of the Spirit for it is in her a fountain of living water springing up unto everlasting life (St. Augustine).! The Nuptial Mass as the Return to Paradise Marriage as in the Beginning Bridegroom and bride come to Church.! Bridegroom is alone in Church.! Priest is beside bridegroom in Church.! Bride enters Church/walks up aisle.! Man and woman return to Paradise! Man is alone in Paradise! God: It is not good for man to be alone.! The Father brings woman to man.! Have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage?! Will you love and honor each other as man and wife for the rest of your lives?! Do you wish to enter into Christian marriage?! Will you fulfill Genesis 2:24: Therefore, a man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.! Congregation stands & Canon D.! The priest asks bridegroom and bride three questions.! Creation shares in joy of man and woman.! God asks bridegroom and bride to live their marriage as intended in Paradise.! Will you accept children lovingly from God and raise them according to the laws of Christ and his Church?! Will you receive the blessing of Genesis 1:28: God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth! 4

The Eucharist and the Spousal Union The Eucharist is the very source of Christian marriage In this sacrifice of the New and Eternal covenant, Christian spouses encounter the source from which their own marriage covenant flows, is interiorly structured and continuously renewed (Pope John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio, #57).! Spouses enter into the moment that the new Adam and new Eve became one at the wounding of the heart.! Bridegroom and bride come home where the sacrament of marriage transforms their home into a foretaste of Paradise.! Marriage and the Mystery of Salvation When bridegroom and bride consummate their union, they speak with their bodies the words they spoke with their mouth at the foot of the altar and perpetuate that moment in time.! Spouses are therefore the permanent reminder to the Church of what happened on the Cross; they are witnesses to the salvation in which the sacrament makes them sharers. Of this salvation event marriage, like every sacrament, is a memorial, actuation and prophecy Marriage is a real symbol of the event of salvation (Pope John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio, #13).! The Great Mystery of Marriage Source: St. Leo the Great, Sermon 63, taken from Lumen Gentium, #26, Second Vatican Council. As a sacrament, marriage is a mystery that harkens back to the mystery of the Eucharist.! The partaking of the body and blood of Christ does nothing other than make us be transformed into that which we consume (St. Leo the Great).! In the sacrament of marriage, the physical union of husband and wife is a sign of their spiritual union while at the same time it helps to forge that spiritual union.! 5

The Home as a Type of Paradise Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them (Matthew 18:20).! The family is, so to speak, the domestic church (Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium, #11).! The Christian family constitutes a specific revelation and realization of ecclesial communion, and for this reason it can and should be called a domestic church (Pope John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio, #21).! Marriage as a Foretaste of Paradise Then he showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruits and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations (Revelation 22:1-2).! The Church, or, in other words, the kingdom of Christ now present in mystery (Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium, #3).! Just as the Church already participates in the Paradise to be revealed at the end of time, your home participates in that Paradise that is to come.! Small Group Discussion The dignity of Christian marriage is beyond our wildest dreams. There is nothing like it in all the earth. Through it we are given a foretaste of the Paradise to come.! Starter Questions! 1. How can you help your family to better live its life as a foretaste of the Paradise to come?! 2. How can you help our culture understand the beauty of Christian marriage?! Next Week! The Seduction of Modern Man! 6
