WORSHIP SERVICE BAPTISM OF THE LORD 8:30 AM & 11:00 AM JANUARY 13, 2019 614 Griffis Street, Cary, NC 27511 (919) 467-8700 www.carypresbyterian.org 1

ORDER OF WORSHIP Gathering Chime Prelude Andante Rinck Welcome and Announcements (Please sign the Welcome Book and pass it to your neighbor.) Introit The God of Heaven Warren *Call to Worship from Psalm 29 (* Please stand as you are able.) One: We come, in response to God s voice calling us to share in revering the Holy One. All: We greet you, God of holiness and mystery; Creator of all life and wondrous beauty. One: We come, in response to God s voice calling us to honor the name of Lord God. All: We greet you, God of wisdom and truth; God, the Quiet Center of all life and hope. One: We come, in response to God s voice calling us to celebrate with joy the glories of our Great and Glorious God; whose majestic voice thunders through all of creation. All: We greet you, God of radiant light and splendor, the Lord God Almighty, glorious in power; yet your holy voice also overflows with tenderness, peace and blessings. *Hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing No. 475 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Merciful God, in baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, but we confess that we prefer our old lives; we let nostalgia prevent us from trusting you to accept newness; we cling to destructive habits, we nurture grudges, and we are reluctant to welcome or forgive one another. In your loving kindness, have mercy upon us and move among us so that we might live 2 together with grace.

Silent Confession *Response Have Mercy, God, upon My Life (v.1) No. 421 Have mercy, God, upon my life, and make me clean within; pour out your everfaithful love and wash away my sin. *Declaration of Pardon *Response Have Mercy, God, upon My Life (v.4) No. 421 Create in me a faithful heart, a spirit right and new. Sustain me with your saving love and keep me close to you. *Sharing the Peace of Christ (11:00 a.m.) One: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All: and also with you. One: Let us share that peace with one another. Prayer for Illumination Old Testament Reading Isaiah 43:1-7 OT, pp. 672 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Gospel Lesson Luke 3:15-22 NT, p. 60 Sermon Wading Lori Pistor *Renewal of Baptismal Vows Vows of Renewal One: Do you renew and affirm the promises made in baptism? One: Do you recognize the call of God to be God's people always? One: Do you embrace the way of Jesus in faith and ministry? One: Do you accept the nurture of the Holy Spirit who renews your spirit each day? 3

One: Do you accept and embrace others who seek a liberating faith in God? One: In renewing your baptismal vows, remember your baptism as a mark of acceptance and welcome into the care of Christ's church where your Christian faith and life are nourished. All: O God, we rejoice in your grace, given and received. We thank you that you claim us, that you wash us, strengthen us, and guide us, that you empower us to live a life worthy of our calling. In the way of Jesus, make us as water in a dry and thirsty world. Establish us to be places of refreshment. Root us and nurture us in love, that with all your people, we may rightly and justly serve you. Fill us with your fullness that our lives may overflow in hope and trust. Amen. *Hymn I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry No. 488 Time with Our Children Offering of Tithes and Gifts Offertory Anthem The Lord Came Down to the River Choplin Chancel Choir When the Lord came down to the river to be baptized by John, the Holy Spirit led the way. When he came up from the water, he saw the heavens open wide as he heard a voice from heaven come to say: This is my Son in whom I am well pleased. This is my Son who comes to follow me. Then a dove from heaven came down and there was a glory all around. And the Spirit led the way as the Lord began his ministry that day. And as others come to the water to renew today. The Holy Spirit leads the way. As we gather by the water, God s blessings shower down and now the Holy Spirit seems to say: This is my child in whom I am well pleased. This is my child who comes to follow me. And my Spirit will some down, my love and power will surround. And I will lead the way as my child begins a life of faith today. Now as others come to the water, and the Spirit leads the way. 4

*Doxology Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow No. 609 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! *Prayer of Commitment Prayers of Joy and Concern and the Lord s Prayer p.35 Lord in your goodness: Hear our praise; Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *Hymn Wonder of Wonders, Here Revealed (vv. 1&2) No. 489 *Benediction *Hymn Wonder of Wonders, Here Revealed (v. 4) No. 489 Now we our vow of faith renew, stretch wide our sights to global view, and claim with Christians far and near a larger family held dear. * Postlude Vivace Stanley After worship, the Officer of the Day will be available to answer any questions for visitors and CPC members. Important Security Note After opening a door with a keypad you must turn the knob/handle BACK to the LEFT. There are signs telling how to properly open and re-lock the doors as you enter. The procedure is vital to read and follow, or the door will be left unlocked. (This has been discovered several times.) Please help us use this system correctly and share the word with others. 7 Look for a how-to video on the CPC Family Facebook Page.
