St. Peter Parish From the Director of Faith Formation Cambridge, MA This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe (D. N. Iesu Christi universorum Regis). It is the final Sunday of our liturgical year. It s hard for me to believe, but Advent begins in one week; Christmas is around the corner. Many people I ve talked with recently agree that this fall has somehow zipped by and that the winter and holidays are arriving too soon. Can Christmas really come too soon? Aren t we eager to celebrate what has been described as the single most important event in human history: God entering time and space in our midst and in the flesh as one of us? And didn t the life and teachings and early followers of Jesus of Nazareth change the course of human history and for the better? It might be hard to see that today, when poverty, tragedy, disaster, and oppression continue. Yet what also continues strongly and predominates is our belief and way of life taught to us by the one dwelt among us: Love one another as I have loved you. A simply stated lesson that brings joy when practiced and sorrow when ignored. Advent is the time to dig into this lesson and Christmas is the time to celebrate the joy of living it out well. Mini Retreat The Spiritual Exercises and Social Justice Retreat Leader: Rev. Peter Gyves, SJ Saturday, December 1, 9:00 a.m. - Noon Parish Center The mini retreat will focus on what it means to live faith-based values in society. It will offer an introduction to the dynamic of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola. There is no charge. Freewill offerings are accepted. Please email or call Anna Molettieri to sign up: 617-547-4235 x117 or amolettieri@saintpetercambridge.org. Great Local Volunteer Opportunity Harvard Square Churches Meal Program Volunteers Needed December 13 - January 31 The Harvard Square Churches Meal Program serves a nutritious sit-down dinner to over 120 guests at Christ Church, 0 Garden Street, every Thursday evening. Our parish has filled in for many years while regular college volunteers are on break. If you are interested in helping out, we need to send 5-6 volunteers each week from December 13 to January 31. Volunteers need to arrive by 4:45 p.m. and finish at 7:30 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals and families with older children. To sign up for one or more of the weeks please contact Anna Molettieri at 617-547-4235 x117 or amolettieri@saintpetercambridge.org. Food Pantry Current Needs We need: raisins, dried fruit, nuts, trail mix, herbal and flavored tea, salad dressing, baby food, and laundry detergent.
