David and Goliath Bible Verse I will live in the Lord s house as long as I live. (Psalm 23:6) Session 7 October 13 Bible Story 1 Samuel 17:1-51a Leap of Faith God s love is with me all the days of my life. Before You Begin Goliath was a giant a symbol of the threat of the Philistines. David, on the other hand, was young too young even to fight in the army. David was not frightened at the prospect of facing Goliath. David relied on God to be with him in a frightening situation. What David knew was that God was his real selfdefense. David s victory did more than simply defeat Goliath and the Philistines. The victory showed the Israelites and the Philistines that God is so powerful that even a young boy with five smooth stones and the power and strength of God in his heart can defeat a larger enemy. The Bible story of David and Goliath is one of the most familiar in the Bible. Even people with no real knowledge of the Bible know at least the broad outline of the Bible story a young boy with nothing but a slingshot defeats a mighty giant. The heart of the Bible story is that the whole army of Israel is frightened of Goliath and refuses to answer his challenge. David knows that victory is not up to him. It is in God s hands. This is a Bible story about David s faith and God s faithfulness. Our desire as teachers and leaders of young children is to encourage young children to seek peaceful ways of solving their problems. Frequently, parents and teachers will tell a young child to use words rather than actions like hitting or pushing, and then expect the child to know what the appropriate words are. Young children frequently need to be given the words to use. If a child is hitting because his toy was taken, we need to say: Tell Sally you did not like it when she took your car. Tell her she may not take your car because you are playing with it. As Sally is also sure to be upset, you can then say to her, Sally, ask Mark if you may have the car when he is finished with it. Then let Sally know you will follow through and make sure she is the one who gets the car next. Learning to get along with others is not easy, but it is a skill we all need to learn. Like Goliath, we can be defeated when we yell and threaten. Like David, we can depend on God s help and wisdom when we are dealing with others. Model dependence on God in front of the children. It will make your life and theirs more peaceful. Requires preparation. Fall 2013 Session 7 GrowProclaimServe.com 57

Grow Together The following activities may be done in interest centers as the children arrive or may be done with the entire group. Welcome Supplies: Stickers, Attendance Chart (Resource Pak pp. 12 & 13, 23), Bible, offering basket, CD player, CD-ROM Greet each parent and child. Play music (CD-ROM) as they arrive. Show the children where to place their offerings on the worship table. Have the Bible open to 1 Samuel 17:1-51a on the worship table. Give each child the Sticker of the slingshot to put on the attendance chart. Fun Pak Center Supplies: Fun Pak 7, glue or tape, craft sticks (3 per child) TIP The Welcome Activities help the children become involved so that they find it easier to leave their parents or guardians. Help each child make the stick puppets from the Fun Pak (Fun Pak 7). SAY: In our Bible story today, David is a boy who defeats a big giant named Goliath. Even though David was young, he was able to do something big! Activity Pages Center Supplies: Bible Story Pak 7, crayons or markers, safety scissors, glue sticks Help the children cut off the picture strips on the edge of (Activity A) and (Activity B). Have the children color all the items. Help them cut out the items and then glue them to the correct spots on each page. Encourage the children to finish coloring the scene of David and Goliath on both pages. SAY: David was a boy who depended on God to help him. Play Dough Center Supplies: play dough, Bible Story Pak 7 (Activities A and B) Put out play dough, and invite the children to make stones like David used and a shield like the giant Goliath used. Show the children (Activity A) and (Activity B) if they need pictures to use as a guide. SAY: David was a brave boy and did not rely on very much except God s help when he fought his giant, Goliath. Measuring Center Supplies: wide masking tape (such as painter s tape), ink pen, ruler or yardstick Measure out nine feet on the floor, and apply a strip of masking tape measuring nine feet long to the floor. If possible, use wide masking tape. Measure each child on the masking tape, and write his or her name on the masking tape. THEN SAY: This is how big Goliath was, and this is how big you are. Goliath was a BIG man. 58 October 13 GROW Proclaim Serve Preschool Leader s Guide

Coloring and Stickers Center Supplies: Brave David (Reproducible 7a), small rock Stickers, crayons Photocopy Brave David (Reproducible 7a) for each child. Invite the child to color the picture of David holding his slingshot and bag on Reproducible 7a. Give the child the 5 (small) rock Stickers, and invite him or her to apply them to David s shepherd s bag. Mission Moment Supplies: church-shaped envelope (Leader s Guide p. 122), heart Stickers, crayons SAY: I will call each of you to take little David Steps to the Bible Circle Area; but before you take the steps, you must say: David was not afraid of Goliath! Once the children are in the Bible Story Circle, SAY: In our Bible story today, David was a young boy when he fought Goliath. David depended on God s help many times in his life. God loved David, and David loved God. Christians show their love for God in many ways. One way we show our love is by giving what we have to help others. This month we are helping people who live far away in a country called Russia. In that country, the people need churches in which to worship God. We are collecting money this month to send to the people so that they can build churches. Remember to bring the church envelopes that you are collecting money in for this mission project back to Sunday school on October 27. Our money will go a long way to help God s children. Even though you are young, like David was, you can help God s children. TIP Give each child who was not present last week a church envelope (Leader s Guide p. 122) and heart Stickers. Proclaim the Word Visit Leaper s Pointe Supplies: Grow! DVD (Ages 3-6), DVD player Play the theme song Leap of Faith (Ages 3-6, DVD), and encourage the children to sing along and do the motions.
