God s Heart for the Poor God s Heart for the Marginalized (part 2)

Review Parable of the Good Samaritan Not Who is my neighbor? but How can I be a neighbor to those in need? Pray: God, break my heart with what breaks yours.

Old Testament In the Mosaic Law, God built in provisions for the poor Leviticus 23:22 When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the Lord your God.

Old Testament In the Mosaic Law, God built in provisions for the poor Exodus 23:10-11 10 For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, 11 but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused.

Old Testament In the Mosaic Law, God built in provisions for the poor Exodus 23:10-11 Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.

Old Testament God commanded the Israelites to give to the poor Deuteronomy 15:10-11 10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.

Old Testament God commanded the Israelites to give to the poor Deuteronomy 15:10-11 11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.

Old Testament We are blessed when we give to the poor Proverbs 19:17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done

Old Testament We are blessed when we give to the poor Proverbs 28:27 Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.

Old Testament Many of the prophets spoke out against not being concerned for the poor Ezekiel 16:49 Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

New Testament Jesus Luke 4:18-19 18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

New Testament Jesus Luke 4:18-19 He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor.

New Testament Jesus Luke 14:13-14 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed.

New Testament Jesus Luke 19:8-10 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.

New Testament Jesus Luke 19:8-10 9 Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

New Testament First Century Church Acts 6 (Church caring for helpless widows)

New Testament First Century Church Galatians 2:10 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

New Testament First Century Church Romans 15:26 26 For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord s people in Jerusalem.

New Testament First Century Church James 1:27 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

God s heart for the poor, the needy, and the oppressed is also reflected in the history of the church

Some Cautions

Some Cautions In the midst of ministering to the poor & standing for social justice, we must not forget that man s ultimate need is to be reconciled to God. Therefore, the clear proclamation of the gospel must still be central. (Luke 19:10, John 14:6, Acts 4:12, Romans 1:16-17, 2 Corinthians 5:16-21)

Some Cautions While we are called to do what we can, we must keep in mind that suffering (including poverty, famine, injustice, war) is an inevitable part of this fallen world and will not end until the return of Christ (Mark 14:7, John 18:36, Matthew 24:4-14)

Some Cautions In our efforts to help, we must be careful not to enable others towards bad or irresponsible behavior (2 Thessalonians 3:10) We have a special responsibility and calling to care for those of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10)
