The following reading from the Gospel of John, the first chapter, verses 1-14, is the appointed reading for Christmas Day according to the lectionary series. Some have referred to this reading as John s Christmas story. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 1 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son, full of grace and truth. WISHING YOU A BLESSED ADVENT, A MERRY CHRISTMAS, and, A SAFE & HAPPY NEW YEAR! from The Lord of Life Staff Kelley Harbert, Tealithia Oliver, David Pencil, Pr. Skip Wachsmann

Adult Education will have 3 classes to choose from. Join us for Adult Sunday Education!! ADULT OFFERINGS FOR FALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: BY HEART: AN EXPLORATION OF THE SMALL CATECHISM. This study will generate conversation about the biblical and historical context of the catechism, its link to the church s faith, its connection to Luther s life and your life today. Great for longtime Lutherans as well as those newer to the Lutheran faith. This class will meet in the Café. FOR WOMEN - BECOMING A VESSEL THAT GOD CAN USE - A ten-week study that shows how God accomplishes extraordinary things through ordinary people, transforming us into vessels He can use. ENGAGING OTHERS, KNOWING OURSELVES: A LUTHERAN CALLING IN A MULTI-RELIGIOUS WORLD. This book invites us all into conversation by challenging us to reflect on our past, learn from our present, and envision the future to which God is calling us. The heart of the book is the real-life case studies of inter-religious relations unfolding in a variety of ELCA ministry contexts. They encourage us to understand that our questions, doubts, and failures are as important as our answers, convictions, and successes. They challenge us to embrace that while there are a variety of responses to religious plurality, our common response is rooted in our Lutheran vocation our response to God s love in Jesus Christ. This class meets in the Sanctuary. TUESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY continues its study of THE GOSPEL OF MARK. We gather each Tuesday evening, 6:30-8:00 p.m., in the café for prayer and study. The Gospel of Mark is the central focus of the gospel readings beginning with the new church year in Advent. Bring your Bible and join us! THURSDAY MORNING STUDY GROUP - Meets at Target Store (Lakeline) snack area at 9:45am. Study: " Breaking Free From Fear ". Look forward to seeing you all. Praise the Lord! Volume No. 117 Kindred Sisters Kindred Sisters had a "Reformation Party" at our November meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 7th. Marge Kretschmar presented a very interesting and informative meeting, presenting each of us with a small booklet of Luther's Small Catechism. We discussed Luther's life and how his Catechism teaches us the main precepts of our Lutheran faith! We learned about the Luther Rose, the symbol of our Lutheran faith, whose colors depict the message of what God has done for us in Christ - the black cross (Jesus died), red heart (God's love), white rose (the Holy Spirit), blue (joy of new Christian life), and gold circle (eternal life). We enjoyed our lunch, fellowship, and delicious cookies and German Strudel, provided by our hostesses, Marge, and Barbara Carter. Thank you so much, ladies! Life-Lines Page 8 FOLLOW THE STAR Not your typical Christmas Story The annual Follow the Star event, produced by Good Shepherd Church, is scheduled for December 7, 8, and 9, from 6:30-9:00pm. Experience a live production of the LIFE of Jesus Christ. You know the beginning. Now hear the rest of the story. Drive it. Walk it. Live it. Free Admission. Collecting nonperishable food donations for Hill Country Community Ministries. Lord of Life will be sponsoring two Austin area families (through Operation Blue Santa) and one individual (from Family Eldercare) during this holiday season. The hope is to form a personal relationship with these families and continue to give past the Christmas holidays. How can you help? 1 Pick an angel off the narthex tree. Each family member/senior is represented by several tags (ex. clothes, toys, personal items). If you pick clothing, you will be expected to give clothing items. If a specific toy or item was requested, that will be on a separate angel to be elected. There is no limit on spending, but keep in mind that others will be providing gifts to that person and other family members so the hope is that all receive an appropriate amount that is fairly even. Purchase item(s) for the angel you selected. Return the item to the church (under the tree) wrapped and no later than Wednesday, Dec 13. 3 Gift wrapping is optional. The teenage Youth have offered to wrap items for each individual during Sunday Education hour, Dec 3 & 10. If you prefer to wrap your item, make sure it is clearly labeled with the recipient s name only*. 4 Label gift with recipient s name only* The gifts will all be labeled From Lord of Life Church. We can acknowledge and celebrate the old but move forward with the new. Success is not always measured by the same measuring stick. As leaders we need to help people connect the dots and make sure what we are doing is aligning with our mission, and that it s about serving and being a part of the community, not membership.
