Key Passage: You shall acknowledge no God but me, no saviour except for me. Hosea 13:4 (NIV) Big Picture Question: Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things. INTRODUCE THE STORY TEACH THE STORY EXPERIENCE THE STORY (15-20 Minutes) (10-15 Minutes) (20-25 Minutes)

The BIBLE Story Joseph saved his family Genesis 42-46, 50 Jacob and his family needed help. They did not have enough food to eat. No one had enough food to eat! Except in Egypt. So Jacob sent 10 of his sons to Egypt to buy food. His son Benjamin stayed home. When the brothers got to Egypt, they bowed down before Joseph, the man in charge of the food. The brothers thought Joseph was a stranger, but Joseph knew they were his brothers. Many years before, they sold him as a servant. Now he had an important job in Egypt and was very powerful. The brothers bowed down to Joseph. Joseph s dreams from a long time before were coming true. Joseph said, Are you here to spy on the land? The brothers said, No! We are brothers. We have another brother at home. Joseph said, Go home and bring back your brother. Joseph gave the brothers some food, and they went home. The brothers told their father everything that had happened, and their father was very upset. But when all the food was gone, Jacob asked his sons to go back to Egypt. So the brothers took money to buy food. They took their brother Benjamin and a special gift for Joseph. The brothers gave Joseph the gift and bowed before him. Joseph invited them to his house, and they all ate a meal together. Then Joseph told all of his servants and helpers to go away. He turned to the brothers. I am Joseph, your brother! he said. You sold me into Egypt, but I know God sent me here to save a small part of your family by giving them food. Go home and get all of your family members and come back to Egypt. You will have enough food here. The brothers went home and told their father everything that had happened. All of Jacob s family went to Egypt. Jacob hugged Joseph, and they cried happy tears. When Jacob died, Joseph s brothers were afraid. Was Joseph going to punish them for what they did? No. Joseph said, You had a bad plan, and you did a bad thing. But God planned it for something good. God s plan was good, and God s plan saved the lives of many people. Christ Connection: Joseph s brothers hurt Joseph, but God had a good plan. God used Joseph s hurt to save His people from hunger. One day, people would hurt God s Son, Jesus. God s good plan was to use Jesus death to save His people from sin. 2

INTRODUCE the Story WELCOME TIME: Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Have one leader stand by the door with the clipboard to greet children by name and welcome their parents as they arrive. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Prompt kids to discuss a time they chose to forgive someone who had wronged them. Was it difficult to do so? Say When someone does something to hurt you, it can feel impossible to forgive that person. Today we will learn more about Joseph. His brothers had done much to hurt him, but when Joseph had a chance to get revenge, he forgave them instead. Let s learn more about it. ACTIVITY PAGE Help preschoolers locate the beginning of Joseph s journey. Guide a child to draw a line, tracing the path to the end in Egypt. As preschoolers work, recall the highlights in Joseph s life that led him to become second-in-command in Egypt. SAY Do you remember the dreams Joseph had that meant his family members would bow down to him? Do you remember Joseph s special gift from his father and how angry his brothers were? Joseph s brothers sent him to Egypt, but God was with Joseph. Can you remember some of the things that happened to Joseph in Egypt? ACTIVITY: Coin snatch game Invite the kids to sit in a circle. Choose one kid to sit in the center of the circle and give her the plastic coin. She will close her eyes and place the coin on the ground behind her. While her eyes are closed, silently designate a child to sneak forward and take the coin. Then the child in the middle will open her eyes and try to guess who took the coin. Play multiple times, allowing other kids to be the kid in the middle. SAY In our story today, we will hear about a time Joseph s brothers went to Egypt to buy grain. They did not recognize Joseph. What do you think Joseph did when he saw His brothers? Would it surprise you to know he gave them their money back with the grain? WORSHIP: While the children finish playing or coloring, get the worship DVD ready. Choose 3 or 4 songs to sing today. SAY It s large group time! Come sit on the rug with us! We re going to sing some fun songs together that worship God! Why do we sing to God? (Answer: To honor Him with our worship!) 3

TEACH the Story TRANSITION TO THE STORY: To gain the attention of all the kids to move them to Bible study, flip off the lights or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Place a bookmark at Genesis 42 46; 50 in your Bible. Invite a kid to open it and reverently display the open Bible. SAY God talks to us through His words in the Bible. All God s words are true. Today s Bible story comes from the first book of the Bible: Genesis. Genesis is in the Old Testament. TELL THE BIBLE STORY: Show the Bible Story Video and then recap the Bible story by reading the words below. SAY Joseph s brothers traveled to Egypt to buy grain for their family. The brothers thought Joseph was a stranger, but Joseph knew they were his brothers. Years before, Joseph s brothers hurt him and sent him away but God had a good plan. God used Joseph to save His people from hunger. One day, people would hurt God s Son, Jesus. God s good plan was to use Jesus death to save His people from sin. PRACTICE THE KEY PASSAGE: Cut out the key passage marker and place it at Hosea 13:4. Invite a volunteer to come up and open your Bible to the key passage. Read the key passage aloud. Create motions for preschoolers to use as they say the key passage. Use the key passage song video for inspiration. SAY Our key passage reminds us that there is no Savior or Rescuer other than God. Only God could made something good out of all of the terrible things that happened to Joseph. MISSIONS MOMENT: Show the Prayer Wheel image. Say This is a prayer wheel. Many people in Nepal say prayers written on prayer wheels like this one to gods who are not real. Let s pray for the people of Nepal to know they can pray to the one true God. Let s also pray that they will hear about God s good plan to use Jesus death to save people from sin. 4

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION: Break into smaller groups with one leader in each group. Ask the question and open up for discussion. Display the Bible story picture as you ask the following questions. Retell portions of the Bible story as needed. Remind children that Joseph s brothers traveled to Egypt to buy grain because there was not much food in their homeland. Mention that God used Joseph to save His people from going hungry. Display the Bible story picture as you ask the following questions. Retell portions of the Bible story as needed. -Why did Joseph s brothers go to Egypt? (to buy food) -Who was in charge of selling food in Egypt? (Joseph) -Why did the brothers not recognize Joseph? (It had been a very long time since they had seen each other.) -What did Joseph tell his family to do so that they would have enough food? (come live in Egypt) -Why were the brothers afraid? (They thought Joseph would punish them.) -Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things. PRAY TO CLOSE: SAY Why do we pray? (Answer: To open our hearts to God and talk to Him!) Ask the group if anyone has any prayer requests and pray together as a group. If there are a lot of children, break into smaller groups and have leaders pray for the children s requests. SNACK: Gather preschoolers for snack time and have them wipe their hands with a sanitizing wipe. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Remind children that God can do all things. EXPERIENCE the Story ACTIVITY 1: Draw food Encourage boys and girls to draw food items onto paper plates. Invite a child to tell about the foods she has drawn. Talk about specific foods and ask whether a child likes or dislikes it. Challenge an older preschooler to cut food out of construction paper and glue it onto a plate. SAY When you are hungry, what kind of food do you like to eat? In today s Bible story, Jacob and his family did not have enough food to eat. No one had enough food to eat! Except in Egypt. So Jacob sent 10 of his sons to Egypt to buy food. Can you guess who the brothers had to see to buy food? Joseph! Listen to the Bible story to hear what happened.was preparing to use Joseph to save his family. From Jacob s family, Jesus would eventually be born. Jesus came to save us from sin. ACTIVITY 2: Wear a disguise Print the Disguises printable onto heavyweight paper. Cut out the disguises. Use tape to attach a straw to the back of each image. Show a child how to hold a mustache up to his face. Look in a mirror or take a picture with a digital camera. SAY Joseph was not wearing a disguise, but he looked very different than he did when he was younger. His brothers did not recognize him. They were afraid that Joseph would punish them for sending him to Egypt. Joseph knew that God planned for everything to happen the way it did. Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things. God even planned for His Son, Jesus, to save His people from sin. 5

TRANSITION AND DISMISSAL: For the remainder of the time, kids may color the Bible story coloring page, play a simple game to practice the key passage, or sing another song together. CHECKOUT PROCEDURE: As parents begin to arrive, open the door and have one leader stand just outside the classroom door with the attendance sheet. Take the parent s security sticker and call loudly for the child to come. While you wait for the child to come, tell the parents something that their child enjoyed doing or did well during the service and distribute the preschool big picture cards for families. Before you let the child leave the classroom, look to see that the parent and child security codes match and remove the sticker from the child s shirt as they leave. Note: If a parent lost their security sticker, send them to the check-in desk for approval; never allow a child to go to a parent unless they have the security sticker. 6
