GATHERING SONG Hymn 147 The First Nowell stanzas 1, 2, 5, and 6 *CALL TO WORSHIP Arise, shine; for your light has come, And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Nations shall come to your light And rulers to the brightness of your rising. *PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God of the nations, we have seen the star of your glory rising in splendor. The radiance of your incarnate Word pierces the night that covers the earth and signals the dawn of justice and peace. May his brightness illumine our lives and beckon all nations to walk as one in your light. We ask this through Jesus Christ your Word made flesh, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. *HYMN 143 Angels, from the Realms of Glory Regent Square The Ten-Cents-A-Meal offering for hunger may be brought forward at this time. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Silence Unison God of glory, you sent Jesus among us as the light of the world, to reveal your love for all people. We confess that our sin and pride hide the brightness of your light. We turn away from the poor; we ignore cries for justice; we do not strive for peace. In your mercy, cleanse us of our sin, and baptize us once again with your Spirit, that, forgiven and renewed, we may show forth your glory shining in the face of Jesus Christ. *ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Friends, believe the good news. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. *RESPONSE TO FORGIVENESS Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me, and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me, and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen. Isaiah 60:1, 3

RESPONDING TO THE WORD ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION OF DEACONS AND ELDERS Litany of gifts Leader: There are different gifts, People: But it is the same spirit who gives them. Leader: There are different ways of serving God. People: But it is the same Lord who is served. Leader: God works through different people in different ways. People: But it is the same God who achieves his purpose through them all. Leader: Each one is given a gift by the Spirit, People: To use it for the common good. Leader: Together we are the body of Christ. People: And individually members of the body. Leader: Though we have different gifts, together we are a ministry of reconciliation led by the risen Christ. We work and pray to make his church useful in the world, and we call men and women to faith, so that, in the end, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father. People: Just as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life to set others free. Questions to the deacons and elders Questions to the congregation Laying on of hands Installation prayer Charge Unison Prayer God of grace, who called us to a common ministry as ambassadors of Christ, trusting us with the message of reconciliation: give us courage and discipline to follow where your servants rightly lead us; that together we may declare your wonderful deeds and show your love to the world; through Jesus Christ the Lord of all.
