If you are visiting, please fill out a guest card and place it in the offering plate or in the basket in the entry area to help us welcome you. Please introduce yourself to others near you and to the pastor. We hope you can join us again soon. NURSERY CARE Nursery care for infants and toddlers is available in Berkland Fellowship Hall directly behind the entry area. Children are welcome and included at worship; feel free to walk with them in the back of the worship area if they become noisy or restless. Second Sunday after Epiphany January 20, 2019 We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whoever you are and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome in this community celebrating God s Spirit in the world. God s grace meets us in the water and Word, and in the bread and wine. We are here to know the touch of God s forgiveness and love and to hear God s calling in our lives. Please introduce yourself to others here and to the pastor. We invite you to complete the Guest card in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate as a reminder of your presence with us in worship today. GATHERING The Sundays after Epiphany continue to celebrate the revelation of the glory of God to us as it was made known to the magi and to those on Jordan s banks at the baptism of Jesus today using wedding imagery. Our God rejoices over God s people as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride. By the power of the Spirit there are gifts galore for everyone. In Christ Jesus the best wine is saved for last. Taste and see. Prelude Welcome Hymn Hail To The Lord s Anointed next page Greeting The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 2

Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Lord God, source of every blessing, you showed forth your glory and led many to faith by the works of your Son, who brought gladness and salvation to his people. Transform us by the Spirit of his love, that we may find our life together in him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated. 5

WORD Reading Isaiah 62:1-5 printed on back The people s return to Judah after the exile was marred by economic and political troubles. Nevertheless, the prophet declares, Jerusalem and Judah will be restored. God will rejoice over Jerusalem as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride; and the people are called to the celebration. Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. Choral Anthem I Dream A World Of such I dream, of such I dream. I dream a world where man No other man will scorn, Where love will bless the earth And peace its paths adorn I dream a world where all Will know sweet freedom's way, Where greed no longer saps the soul Nor avarice blights our day. A world I dream where black or white, Whatever race you be, Will share the bounties of the earth And every man is free, Where wretchedness will hang its head And joy, like a pearl, Attends the needs of all mankind- Of such I dream, I dream a world! Andre Thomas -Langston Hughes (1902-1967) 6

Reading 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 printed on back The congregation at Corinth experienced division as people were comparing one another s spiritual gifts, thinking some to be superior to others. Paul invites this fractured community to trust that God s Holy Spirit has gifted them all perfectly for their mission together. Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. Children s Message Pastor Anita Gospel Acclamation The Assembly and Cantor sing the acclamation together. 7

Gospel Announcement The Holy Gospel according to John the second chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel John 2:1-11 printed on back Turning water to wine at the wedding at Cana is described as the first of Jesus signs. Through many such epiphanies, Jesus reveals that he bears God s creative power and joyful presence into the world. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Tasting the Wine of New Creation Rev. Anita Warner Silence for reflection. When the music begins, stand to sing the hymn of the day. Hymn I ve Got the Joy, Joy, Joy next page Prayers of the Church Lord, in your merch, hear our prayer Peace MEAL The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. You are invited to share a sign of God s peace with others. You may use these or similar words: Peace be with you. You may use the sign of a handshake, a hug, or a bow with palms together. Please allow those who prefer less contact to choose the level of touch. 8

Offering Welcome! If you are visiting, please fill out a Guest card this morning on the welcome table in the narthex / gathering area and leave it in the basket, as a way to help us welcome you further and another way of offering yourself to God on this day. Offertory Anthem King of Glory, King of Peace K. Lee Scott Kyle Jones, Tenor; Andoni Bundros, Accompanist King of glory, King of peace, I will love Thee; And that love may never cease, I will move Thee. Thou hast granted my request, Thou hast heard me; Thou did st note my working breast, Thou hast spared me. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing Thee, And the cream of all my heart I will bring Thee. Though my sins against me cried, Thou did st clear me; And alone when they replied, Thou did st hear me. Sev n whole days, not one in sev n, I will praise Thee; In my heart though not in heav n, I can raise Thee. Small it is, in this poor sort To enroll Thee; E en eternity s too short to extol Thee! 10

Offering Response As With Gladness Men of Old DIX As they offered gifts most rare, at thy cradle, rude and bare, so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin s alloy, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ to thee, our heav nly King. Offering Prayer Let us pray. God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Celebration of Ministry Today we celebrate the ministry of the Church Council. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 11

Food of the Month Advent collects non-perishable food for the Reach Out food bank at St. Catherine Church in Morgan Hill. Foods for the month of January are baby food & diapers. Other items welcome anytime are: tuna, canned fruits/vegetables, rice, beans, hearty soup/chili, and even baby diapers. Items can be placed in the white wire baskets near the office at Advent. First Quarter Mission For the first quarter, Advent Lutheran has selected the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as our first quarter mission project as they provide lifesaving emergency aid, clean water and medical care to millions of people in Yemen affected by violent conflict and a growing health crisis. Yemen has been embroiled in a bitter civil war since 2015 as the Saudi- and Emirati-led coalition supports the government of President Hadi against the Houthi movement that controls the capital, Sanaa. 24 million people remain in need of humanitarian assistance and the United Nations warned in late 2018 that the country risked facing a massive famine. According to the most recent assessments, 63,500 Yemenis are experiencing catastrophe levels of food insecurity. Yemen is also home to the worst cholera outbreak in modern history, with over one million affected. Please prayerfully consider donating to this most urgent mission. If you would like to receive the above information by email each Friday, please contact the church office at 408-779-3551 or by email at office@advent-lutheran.org. 25
