John 1.29 My dear Children, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The lamb as a symbol for Christ has its roots in the Old Testament. God led the Israelites out of Egypt and slavery into the promised land. On the night God's people were to depart, the firstborn in all the Egyptian families died. The firstborn of the Israelites was saved because God had instructed them to kill a lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood. The angel of death then knew to pass over those houses. The Israelites ate the lamb in a meal before they left. The lamb was to have no blemish, and none of its bones were to be broken. To this day the Jews remember this night with the Feast of Passover. On this day they share a special meal called a Seder meal. The shank of a lamb is one item on the Seder plate. Jesus is called the lamb of God because he is the perfect sacrifice offered to God. After Jesus' crucifixion, soldiers did not break his legs to kill him because he was already dead. Like the Passover lamb, his bones were unbroken. Jesus' death on the cross was a passover from death to life for all of us. By his blood we are saved from death. Jesus made it possible for us to break out of the slavery of sin and death. He gave us the hope of reaching our promised land, Heaven. God s blessings upon you! Fr. Numbers 11:11-20 11 Why do you treat your servant so badly? Moses asked the LORD. Why are you so displeased with me that you burden me with all this people? 12Was it I who conceived all this people? or was it I who gave them birth, that you tell me to carry them at my breast, like a nurse carrying an infant, to the land you have promised under oath to their fathers? 13Where can I get meat to give to all this people? For they are crying to me, Give us meat for our food. 14I cannot carry all this people by myself, for they are too heavy for me. 15If this is the TODAY S READINGS way you will deal with me, then please do me the favor of killing me at once, so that I need no longer face my distress. 16Then the LORD said to Moses: Assemble for me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be elders and authorities among the people, and bring them to the tent of meeting. When they are in place beside you, 17I will come down and speak with you there. I will also take some of the spirit that is on you and will confer it on them, that they may share the burden of the people with you. You will then not have to bear it by yourself. 18To the people, however, you shall say: Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, when you shall have meat to eat. For in the hearing of the LORD you have cried, If only we had meat for food! Oh, how well off we were in Egypt! Therefore, the LORD will give you meat to eat, 19and you will eat it, not for one day, or two days, or five, or ten, or twenty days, 20but for a whole month until it comes out of your very nostrils and becomes loathsome to you. For you have rejected the LORD who is in your midst, and in his presence, you have cried, Why did we ever leave Egypt? Isaiah 45:18-46:4 18For thus says the LORD, The Creator of the heavens, who is God, The designer and maker of the earth who established it, Not as an empty waste * did he create it, but designing it to be lived in: I am the LORD, and there is no other. 19I have not spoken in secret from some place in the land of darkness, I have not said to the descendants of Jacob, Look for me in an empty waste. I, the LORD, promise justice, I declare what is right. 20Come and assemble, gather together, you fugitives from among the nations! They are without knowledge who bear wooden idols and pray to gods that cannot save. 21Come close and declare; let them take counsel together: Who announced this from the beginning, declared it from of old? Was it not I, the LORD, besides whom there is no other God? There is no just and saving God but me. 22Turn to me and be safe, all you ends of the earth, for I am God; there is no other! 23By myself I swear, uttering my just decree, a word that will not return: To me every knee shall bend; by me every tongue shall swear, 24Saying, Only in the LORD are just deeds and power. Before him in shame shall come all who vent their anger against him. 25In the LORD all the descendants of Israel shall have vindication and glory. Ch. 46:1-4: 1Bel bows down, Nebo stoops, their idols set upon beasts and cattle; They must be borne upon shoulders, a load for weary animals. 2They stoop and bow down together; unable to deliver those who bear them, they too go into captivity. 3Hear me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, My burden from the womb, whom I have carried since birth. 4Even to your old age I am he, even when your hair is gray I will carry you; I have done this, and I will lift you up, I will carry you to safety. Hebrew 4:1-10 1Therefore, let us be on our guard while the promise of entering into his rest remains, that none of you seem to have failed. 2For in fact we have received the good news just as they did. But the word that they heard did not profit them, for they were not united in faith with those who listened. 3For we who believed enter into [that] rest, just as he has said: As I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest, and yet his works were accomplished at the foundation of the world. 4For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh day in this manner, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works ; 5and again, in the previously mentioned place, They shall not enter into my rest. 6Therefore, since it remains that some will enter into it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter because of disobedience, 7he once more set a day, today, when long afterwards he spoke through David, as already quoted: Oh, that today you would hear his voice: Harden not your hearts. 8Now if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterwards of another day. 9Therefore, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God. 10And whoever enters into God s rest, rests from his own works as God did from his. John 1:29-34 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Behold, the Lamb of God, * who takes away the sin of the world. 30 He is the one of whom I said, A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me. 31I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel. 32John testified further, saying, I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him. 33I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit. 34 Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God. CCD Corner SAINT OF THE WEEK By Fr. Thomas Kadukappillil Direct my heart toward your testimonies and away from gain. Psalm 119.36 SAINT SEBASTIAN Feast day January 20 According to his legend, he was born in Gaul. He went to Rome, and in 283, Sebastian entered the army under Emperor Carinus to assist the martyrs. Because of his courage he became one of the captains of the Praetorian Guards under Diocletian and Maximian, who were unaware that he was a Christian. He suceeded in converting many soldiers and prisoners to Christianity. Sebastian had prudently concealed his faith, but in 286 it was detected. Diocletian reproached him for his supposed betrayal, and he commanded him to be led to a field and there to be bound to a stake so that certain archers from Mauritania would shoot arrows at him, but the arrows did not kill him. The widow of Castulus, Irene of Rome, went to retrieve his body to bury it, and she discovered he was still alive. She brought him back and nursed him back to health. Martyrdom: Sebastian later stood by a staircase where the emperor was to pass and harangued Diocletian for his cruelties against Christians. This freedom of speech, and from a person whom he supposed to have been dead, greatly astonished the emperor; but, recovering from his surprise, he gave orders for his being seized and beaten to death with cudgels, and his body thrown into the common sewer. A pious lady, called Lucina, admonished by the martyr in a vision, privately removed the body, and buried it in the catacombs at the entrance of the cemetery of Calixtus, where now stands the Basilica of St. Sebastian. As protector against plague: The belief that Saint Sebastian was a defense against the plague was since the medieval age. In 680, Rome was freed from a raging pestilence by him. The episode of a great plague that afflicted the Lombards in the time of King Gumburt, which was stopped by the erection of an altar in honor of St. Sebastian in the Church of Saint Peter in the Province of Pavia, Italy. In Kerala, the devotion to St. Sebastian began to be celebrated in the midst of a terrible outbreak of smallpox. The priests, brought out an image of St. Sebastian, who had been known as a patron during the European plague, and appealed to him to intercede. Very soon the outbreak fully subsided. Patronage: The largest shrine of St Sebastian in the world, the church known as Arthunkal St. Andrew's Basilica and St. Sebastian's International Shrine in Arthunkal, Alappuzha district, Kerala, India, was constructed by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century. The St. Sebastian River in Florida is named after him. It is a tributary of the Indian River Lagoon and comprises part of the boundary between Indian River County and Brevard County in Florida. The adjacent city of Sebastian, Florida and St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park are also named for Saint Sebastian. St. Sebastian is the patron saint of soldiers, athletes, and those who desire a saintly death. Gospel Reflections January 20, 2019 A Call To Witness (Jn 1: 29-34) And I have seen and born witness that this is the Son of God. - John 1: 34. John the Baptist, the prophet in the wilderness, began his ministry by giving up his life for a man he did not know. His mission was to call the people to repentance in order to reveal the Lamb of God to Israel (John 1: 31). Seeing the Holy Spirit descend and remain on Jesus, John testified to the Son of God, and he continued to do so until his martyrdom. John the Baptist did not know the Christ, but he bore witness to him nonetheless. Do we, who are invited to the supper of the Lamb, testify to the Lamb of God? We are a people blessed with the entirety of the Word of God before us and Jesus Christ in our hearts as the Holy Eucharist. Armed with the revelation of the Son of God, how much more are we called to bear witness to Christ? -Theresa Antony 4
