Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. ~Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100* The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a throwaway culture. However, we have great trust in God s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children : In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Another way to take part is through participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Diocesan Respect Life Mass at St. Pius X, Appleton Tuesday, January 15th, Rosary at 5:30 Mass at 6pm. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON! This years volunteer appreciation luncheon will take place on Sunday, January 27th at 12:15 pm at The Woods. We would love all volunteers to attend. If you are or have volunteered in 2018 and have not received an invitation by Monday, January 14th please call the office so that we can add you to the count. We apologize ahead of time if we missed anyone.

CHURCH UN-DECORATING! First of all a big Thank Y ou goes to all you wonderful volunteers who helped make God s house so beautiful for all the Christmas celebrations. It is really sad that it all has to come down so quickly. With that said we need your help after the 9 am Mass on January 13th, The Baptism of the Lord, to take the decorations down. LIVE-STREAM! Please remember that Livestream is available on Sunday mornings at 9 am (Central Time Zone) to those who are not able to join us for Mass. Visit our website at: www.sfxcathedralgb.com click on Live-Stream icon See letter from someone who joins us for Mass. Dear friends, A big Thank You for making your 9 a.m. Mass available to us through Relevant Radio and now via live-streaming. Though I live across the street from my parish church in Chicago, I'm not physically able at 89 to attend. I've felt a sense of community with your parishioners even in the radio Mass, but now visibly on my computer I almost feel like I'm there with you in your beautiful cathedral. If I'm not careful you'll be sending me a box of envelopes! Well, I do donate to Relevant Radio :) It was so good today to listen to Bishop Ricken -- a real teaching bishop. Thank you for gracing my Sundays, and please have a Merry Christmas. ~Dolores THE COMPASS DIOCESAN NEWSPAPER Bishop Ricken extends his deepest gratitude for the Cathedral and St. John Parishes' support of The Compass newspaper. It helps us create communities of discipleship and furthers the mission and ministry of the Catholic Church. The Compass may be the only source of Catholic news some families receive. Our award-winning diocesan newspaper is one of the best ways for the Bishop to reach the people of our diocese. If you do not already subscribe to The Compass, would you consider doing so? If you would like to preview an issue, you can pick up a copy at the greeters desk at the Cathedral or in the back of church at St. John's. 131 S. FROM FR. JOE This weekend another Christmas season draws to a close. I'm so grateful for those that added such solemnity to our celebrations. I thank our decorators, musicians, choirs, servers, readers, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, deacons and our entire staff. Please know that I truly appreciate your involvement and sacrifices. To everyone else who might not be sharing a talent, please consider serving or encouraging a friend or family member to step forward in service. Recently, I decided to not distribute the Precious Blood for the first quarter at the 4 pm Mass. We just do not have enough people willing to be Eucharistic ministers at the 4 pm Mass. Twice, recently, at the 10:45 Mass, I didn't have a server. Servers can be adults too. We do not want to overwhelm and lose any of our volunteers, so we are not going to keep going out and finding a server or Eucharistic minister who isn't scheduled. With enough volunteers, we can keep the commitment to once or twice a month. I want to make things manageable rather than a burden for our current volunteers. Can you help me? Just call the office and ask where the need currently stands. And then step forward for a year! If you are already serving in one of these capacities, please always be on the lookout for fellow parishioners that can join you, especially if you are considering taking a break for a while. We are doing well, but now and then we need to be reminded of all the people that add so much to our worship. Let's all do our part. This is important to keep our worship and parish environment attractive so as to continue to grow our parishes, and give glory to God through a truly solemn and dignified liturgical celebration. Fr. Joe USHER MEETING! All ushers are requested to attend an usher meeting the weekend of January 19th & 20th immediately following Mass. OPEN HOUSE! Come and see the renovations that have taken place at the Faith Formation Center (Gehl Center). The open house will take place after Mass on Sunday, January 20th. Cathedral Book & Gift will also be open from 10 am - 11 am.
