Sometimes I find it difficult and confusing trying to understand the ways of God especially when trying to understand the vast differences in the way others live and act. In the parable of today s Gospel the workers fail to understand why those who worked just one hour received the same wages as those who worked all day. It made me think of the times when I sometimes question and understand why some people seemingly have been gifted more than others going through life. Why does God apparently give more blessings to some than to others? While I was away on vacation, I drove through a few beach-front neighborhoods where the average home value was over a million dollars. I couldn't help but think to myself, what do people do to afford these homes? Later that day when I returned to where I was staying, I turned on the news to watch the news about the Hurricane Irma. As I sat there watching the devastation unfold, I was overcome with emotion seeing so many people lose so much and in many cases, all they had. It was and continues to be a sobering reminder to me of just how blessed I am to have what I have in life and to be able to do what I am able to do. I am so grateful to God for what he has gifted to me. The bigger challenge is what I do with what He has gifted to me. It is not easy to understand God s ways and it would be silly to be jealous of others have or can do because we only see the outside and we never know what cross they may have in life. The last few weeks of tragic weather, political distress and threats of international crisis with North Korea should keep us focused on what really matters. Rather than being envious or jealous of those who seem to have been dealt a better hand in life, let us have a better attitude. Remember to be grateful for the hand we have been given. If you find yourself feeling a bit jealous of others or wondering why others seem to have so much more, stop and think of what our lives would be like right now if we were living in Houston, Texas or South Florida or Puerto Rico or anywhere there is suffering and devastation from the Hurricanes that have been hitting our brothers and sisters in the south. So when we think about others who prosper or have more success or better chances, what can we do? We can give thanks to God for the blessings he has given to them and pray that the Holy Spirit will open their minds and hearts to be willing to use their God given gifts to help those in need. Let us also remember to Thank the Lord for the gifts and blessings he has given to us. Your love and generosity to the hurricane Harvey collection was outstanding. THANK YOU! Smokey invites all parish pets to join him for a special blessing to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, patron saint of animals. Wednesday, October 4th at 6:30 PM on the grounds of the parish office at St. Albert the Great. St Francis is known for founding the Catholic Church s Franciscan order. He lived in Italy during the late 12th and 13th centuries. He is remembered for his generosity to the poor and his willingness to minister to people suffering form leprosy. He is remembered for his great love and compassion for animals and nature. St Francis died at Portiuncula, Italy on October 4, 1226 and Pope Gregory IX pronounced St. Francis a saint in 1228. Come join us as we give thanks and praise to the Lord for our pets and animals! Fr. THE DEACON S CORNER Deacons Corner When we are reading the Bible we often notice re -occurring numbers. In many ancient cultures, including Ancient Judaism and early Christianity, numbers were not used as precisely as we might use them today in our scientific world. Therefore, the numbers we find in scripture are often meant symbolically, not literally. For example, when the Israelites wanted to say a long time, they would say 40 days or 40 years. Not concerned with detailed precision as we are today, saying forty did not mean that they counted carefully and the result was exactly between 39 and 41, no more and no less. So we find that the use of forty is associated with almost each new development in the history of God s mighty acts, especially those of salvation. For example: the Flood 40 days and nights of rain (Gen 7:17); the sending out of the raven (Gen 8:6); Moses fasts on the mount (Ex. 24:18; 34:28); the spies exploration of the land of Canaan (Nu 13:25); Moses prayer for Israel (Dt. 9:25); Goliath s defiance (1 Sa. 17:16); Elijah s journey to Horeb (1 Ki. 19:8); Ezekiel s lying on his right side (Ezk. 4:6); Jonah s warning to Nineveh (Jon. 3:4); Christ s stay in the wilderness prior to his temptation (Mt. 4:2), His appearances after His resurrection (Acts 1:3). For 40 years, the general designation of a generation, the following may be quoted: the main divisions of Moses life (Acts 7:23, 30, 36; Dt. 31:2); Israel s wandering in the wilderness (Ex. 16:35; Nu. 14:33; Jos. 5:6; Ps. 95:10); the recurring pattern of servitude and deliverance in the era of the judges (e.g. Jdg. 3:11; 13:1); the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon (Acts 13:21; 2 Sa. 5:4; 1 Ki. 11:42); the desolation of Egypt (Ezk. 29:11). The next time you are reading God s Word (and I hope that is daily) and you come across the number forty, spend a little time, (maybe 40 minutes ), in meditation of how that event is related to God s salvation plan for you and I. Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent PRO LIFE CHAIN Pro-Life Chain- On October 1, Sunday at 1pm, we are encouraging our parishioners to be part of a one hour, peaceful, prayerful demonstration with other churches in our diocese. The Cost of Discipleship In the mystery of the Transfiguration Jesus reveals to his disciples that he is the Son of God and that he will come again in glory at the end of the age. Yet, this magnificent sight occurs only after Jesus tells his followers that they must take up their crosses in order to follow him. Jesus wants us to share in his glory, while at the same time encourages us to be prepared for the challenges that arise along the way. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more it and to stay informed. Lord Jesus, Give us the grace This day To reach farther, dig deeper, listen longer, and Love without measure. Last year, the parish picnic fell a few weeks after I had arrived as the new parochial vicar. It was rainy, and Fr. Steve was not able to be there, do to his mother s health. Despite all the odds, we ended up having a great time! I met so many people and got to do the limbo with the children and a few other brave adults. The whole event was such a blessing! This year, I was amazed that I recognized almost everyone! What a beautiful parish family we have! For me there is nothing like family. My Dad is one of ten children and he has always stressed the importance of family. When we have family gathering on his side, it is always a party, as there are 36 cousins and many more people in the next generation! In fact, our Hartle gatherings are not unlike the picnic that we just had. There are always some people mingling while others are playing sports, and still others are just having fun watching everything. The whole scene makes me think of the phrase, it is good for us to be here! That is the phase that Peter said when looking on the glory of the Lord at the Transfiguration. Peter was appreciating what was happening and wanting it to last forever. I always feel that way when I am with people that I love. I just don t want our time together to end. After the soccer, frisbee, and football games, I was surprised that most everyone had gone home. Hours had passed, and I was just enjoying being with my parish family. Thank you for being part of this family and for all of the love and grace that you have shared with me! May our Lord repay you a thousandfold! Love and prayers! Fr. Levi Hartle Our parish is dedicated to remaining in the lives of parishioners who may no longer be able to make it to church. If you have a family member or neighbor who is in the hospital, recently homebound, or in a care facility, please inform the parish office so we can connect him or her with our parish ministries which serve these groups. Thank you! RACHEL S VINEYARD A Rachel s Vineyard weekend retreat for postabortion healing will be held on Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2017 at Tabor House in Millvale.
