From The East November 14, 2018: Wor. Jason Wilson with newly entered Mason Bro. Matthew Moran. Worshipful Jason Wilson Greetings South Pasadena Masonic family! The official holiday season is upon us! I hope everyone is doing great and getting to spend time with their loved ones. We have a great month planned as we start the transition to next year. The officers are doing great in their advanced chairs and working with the district inspector to finish up their qualifications. I had a great year with these brothers and look forward to their journey East and I plan on still being around to help them out along the way wherever I can. I also would like to take a moment to thank all the Past Masters of south Pasadena lodge for all the support and advice during the last year, I feel we had a great year! So, moving forward, this month we have our annual holiday party planned and our schedule is starting to load up with entered apprentice degrees. We have two planned this month and two more the following month. I shouldn t have to remind anyone how important it is to have a good turnout for these degree nights and welcoming new brothers to the Fraternity. At the stated meeting we will also be voting on our lodge s Masonic awards, so you are not going to want to miss that! The awards are our way of recognizing stand out Brothers at our lodge who have put in the extra effort to make our year more memorable. The awards will be handed out at the January stated dinner. Look forward to seeing all of you soon. Fraternally yours, Jason Wilson 3 2018

Family Thanksgiving Dinner November 17, 2018 On November 17, 2018 brothers, friends and family gathered at our Lodge for our traditional family Thanksgiving dinner. The annual event has been part of our Lodge s history since it opened it s doors 130 years ago and this year it was no exception. The Lodge officers with the guidance of Wor. Jason Wilson put together a nice, inviting, and warm atmosphere where all met on the level and were treated like family. As the tradition has been, lodge officers, along with our candidates, served the home cooked dinner to the 85 guests in attendance. Both Wor. Ed Spalding, PM and Wor. Jeff Sims, PM pulled out all the stops to make this years feast a memorable one, by frying 6 turkeys, baking two hams, and cooking up the special trimmings for all to enjoy. From the adults to the children everyone was satisfied - thankful for the precious meal and time we all got to spend with each other. The family Thanksgiving dinner is a highlight of every Masonic year. 6 2018 7 2018

The Illumination Lecture Series By Wor. Jeriel C. Smith November 5, 2018 South Pasadena Masonic Lodge Welcomes Bro. Merrick Hamer, PM On November 5, a full-house audience attended the 8 th Illumination Lecture of 2018, at which Worshipful Brother Merrick Hamer, PM, presented an extraordinary lecture entitled The Count of St. Germain: Musician Immortal. Surely, no one but Brother Hamer, an accomplished musician with a degree from USC, could possibly have assayed the full scope of this 18 th century genius whose mysterious persona and implausible life span have fascinated and perplexed historians, esotericists and writers of fiction for over two centuries. The following, excerpted from his own third-person description, captures the tone as well as the contents of his talk: Mr. Hamer will begin his presentation by referring to the Count of Saint Germain as a compelling figure of the eighteenth century who had gained a reputation for possessing abilities 10 2018 seemingly more than human. The rumour that he is immortal has perpetuated and added to the fascination surrounding his persona. This reputation has generated both praise and contempt, even to the present day. Known for his political intrigue, reputed abilities in alchemy, and mastery at jewelry, which aspects of his life will receive minor attention, the Count of Saint Germain was also endowed with a splendid musical talent, and much admiration for his virtuosity on the violin. The legacy of the subject remains highly anecdotal, since many records pertaining to the count s life presumably have been lost. Mr. Hamer will correlate what is known about his mundane life and the sparring records that pertain to it, with the heavily propagated idea that there was a spiritual counterpart to his existence, transcendent of time, and endeavour to explain that correlation

in musical terms and, by way of comparison, resort to such musical figures as Niccolo Paganini and Giuseppe Tartini to explain virtuosity, Pythagoras and Johann Pachelbel, to represent musical ascendency, and Hildegard von Bingen to exemplify the sublimity. Much, if not the majority of what has been discussed or propagated about Saint Germain, springs from the former lives attributed to him, championed chiefly by Theosophical philosophy, and places his spiritual manifestations in such events as the lives of Joseph, the surrogate father of Jesus, Merlin the mediaeval magician, Proclus the Neoplatonist and Roger Bacon the Franciscan scholar. Mr. Hamer will attempt plausibility in connecting the Count of Saint Germain with the music of the spheres, a concept for which Proclus and Bacon were advocates. Music of Saint Germain was not limited to the violin; he composed amply for the human voice in the forms of song and aria. This aspect of the legacy opens portals to the sounds of nature through songbirds and other natural phenomena that arouse the emotive component of the human psyche and its faculty to penetrate the mysteries of nature. Diatonality, or the musical scale that has flourished in Western music, has been discovered in the music of birds. This reveals an additional connexion betwixt sound and colour, as can be realized by an examination of Newtonian theories of c o l o u r a n d s o u n d. D u e t o t h e Theosophical significance of violet and its association with Saint Germain, a parallel will be noted, regarding his position on the colour prism and the leading tone of the diatonic scale. This elevates Saint Germain into higher realms of music and thus opens discussion on aethereal music, or that which does not originate within physical space, the audition of which is dependent upon the human capacity to penetrate beyond the physical realm. That Saint Germain has been reputed to be more than human leads the speculator into such philosophies as Docetism, or possibly something akin to Nestorianim, suggesting that his appearances before his audiences might have been super-physical or in part trans-physical. Such philosophies or doctrines have been attacked by conventional Christianity as heretical, but have been embraced by Gnostics and Neoplatonists. An acceptance of such beliefs, however, may make more cogent the idea that even objects, most auspicious, are aetherieal possessed of powers beyond ordinary comprehension. Monuments are shaped with many materials, including wood, stone and clay; yet are also sculpted by reputation and impressions made on human kind. The Romans erected monuments unto their gods; the church hath created its icons, and a loving public hath memorialized the Count of S a i n t G e r m a i n, w h o s e s o u l, whencesoever it originated and withersoever it hath ventured, once spent a time with humanity on the earth, and lo, we are not alone for it may be walking with us still. 11 2018
